European Athletics President’s Welcome Message

WearedelightedtobebackinItalyforthe22ndeditionoftheEuropean Athletics Junior Championships. The city of Rieti will follow on from Grosseto which hosted a memorable champion-shipsbackin2001.

Rieti is a town steeped in the sport and is an excellent choice for Europe’s new generation of emerging stars to showcase their talent. Stadio Raul Guidobaldi stages one of the world’s top athletics meetings every year in early September, and has also builtatraditionofhavingatrack,re-laidlastsummer,thatproducesfineperformances.Itis sure to witness many more during the four days of this year’s Championships.

The European Athletics Junior Championships is extremely important for the development of athletics in Europe. Throughout each of the previous 21 editions we have had the cream of European junior athletic talent battling for supremacy in their age group and this year is sure to be no different. Many have moved on from these championships to glittering success at the European Athletics Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games at senior level.

IfyoulookbackatthelistofgoldmedallistsinGrosetto12yearsago,youwillcomeacross names such as Yelena Isinbayeva, Mo Farah, Carolina Klüft, Krisztian Pars. These names need no introduction today. There were also plenty of latter day stars who did not heartheirnationalanthemplayedinGrosseto–Norway’sAndreasThorkildsenandRus-sia’sAnnaChicherovabothfinishedwithasilver,whileCroatia’sBlankaVlasicandBettyHeidler of Germany, who both went on to become world champions before the end of the decade, had modest sixth and ninth places in the high jump and hammer respective-ly. This just underlines how important a role these championships have played in shaping the career of some of the stars of the sports.

Rieti has excellent facilities for the athletes and I have no doubt that there will be a great atmosphere at the stadium in July.

European Athletics greatly appreciates the efforts of the Italian athletics federation (FIDAL), the City of Rieti and the local organising committee in the preparation for the Championships.

The ancient capital of Sabina and its territory are set in a beautiful mountainous scenery, with many sites bearing witness to the presence of St. Francis of Assisi in this area.The Rieti province is located in Lazio, in central Italy, on the slopes of the Sabini and Reatini mountains and it is a mostly mountainous area. 4. THE RAUL GUIDOBALDI STADIUM

The Raul Guidobaldi stadium is located in the center of the city of Rieti and it is surroundedalmostentirelybytheriverVelino.The “Camposcuola” was inaugurated on 23 July 1960 with a solemn ceremony. Immediately after the Italian team with its captain Livio Berruti moved in Rieti in order to prepare for the Olympics games of Rome. Thefamoustrackofthestadiumwasinitiallyin“Tennisolite”theninRubcor“andfinallyin“Sportflex”.The“schooltrack”becameaproperStadiumafter1996.ItwasnamedafterProfessor Raul Guidobaldi, the president of CONI Rieti for 12 years.Raul Guidobaldi was an extremely dedicated person who with his commitment and expertise, contributed actively to the realization of important structures re-lated to sport. He has been the protagonist of an historic transition that has laid the foundation for the great development of sport in Rieti.In 2002, the stadium was entirely renewed, the mantle was replaced and a monumentalgrandstandwasbuilt.Justaftertheconclusionoftheseworks,thecityofRietihosted,forthefirsttimein2003,theItalianSeniorChampionships.2012 was the year of the great renovation, a lot of changes were made in ordertobereadytohosttheEuroJunior.ThebrandnewMONDOtrackisbeenuntil now a guarantee of success.Thestadiumhasalsoafullyequippedindoortrack(6lanes80metreslong–2high jump areas 1 pole vault area – 1 long jump area) and a fully equipped outdoorL-shapedtrainingtracklocatedbehindthemainstands.Thetrainingtrackhasbeenlengthenedandrelayedwithanewtracksurfacelastyear.AlternativeTrainingTrackRietihasanaltitudetrackinTerminillo(themountainof Rieti) fully equipped, available for all the teams and athletes accommoda-ted in that area.Since1970thestadiumRaulGuidobaldihasbeenthehomeofthereknownRietiMeeting, the international IAAF event directed by Sandro Giovannelli. Every year the Iaaf meeting rewards the city with top permformances and records. 8 aretheworldrecordsmadeontheGuidobaldi’strack,thelatestinchronologi-cal order : Asafa Powell (9.74 – 100m , 2007) and David Rudisha (1:41:01 - 800, 2010).Athletics in Rieti is most of all youth athletics. For 38 years the local club Atletica StudentescaCaririworkedwithintheschoolworldorganizingstagesandactivi-ties for youth of all ages and disciplines.

6. TRANSPORT

6.1 Transportation Desk

TheTransportationDeskwillbelocatedinthePalaCordoni(justoutsidethesta-dium), with the following opening hours:

6.2 BUS Service

A regular bus service will be provided between the hotels and the stadium. Transfer time between the Pantagruel Hotel and the competition venue is ap-proximately 25 minutes.Transfer time between the Cavour Hotel and the competition venue is approxi-mately 5 minutes.

7. ACCREDITATION

7.1 GeneralEach media will receive an accreditation card, which must be worn at all times and should be clearly visible. Security personnel will control all areas. The accreditationisnottransferableanddoesnotallowtheholdertotakeanotherpersonbeyondcheckpoints.Photosarenotrequiredfortheaccreditationcardsystem.

7.2 Accreditation ProcedureAccreditation cards will be prepared in advance, based on the information provided by the Member Federation through the online entry system. No chan-geswillbeacceptedafterthefinalentrydeadline.Accreditation cards will be distributed in the PalaCordoni Hall, just outside the stadium.

7.3 Loss of an Accreditation CardAny lost or damaged accreditation cards should be reported to LOC, at the accreditation centre. Duplicate cards can be obtained where proof of identity can be established.

7.4 Access Areas for MediaAll media accreditation cards will allow access to the media tribune, mixed zone and press centre.

8. MEDIA FACILITIES AT THE STADIUM

Media CentreMedia centre is located inside the Raul Guidobaldi stadium, right next to the mixedzone.Fullyequippedworkingplacesareavailableforphotographersandwrittenpress.ThereisalsowirelessInternetconnectionfreeofcharge.Workplacesareoccupiedonafirstcomebasis.Pigeon-holes containing entry lists, start lists, results, news, press releases and flashquoteswillbesituatedcloselytotheMediaInfoDesk.Journalistsareaskedto sign at Media Centre whether they wish to receive hardcopy results or not. There is a powerful wireless Internet connection.Startlists,resultsandflashquoteswillbedistributedintheMediaTribuneduringthe competitions to journalists who have registered their request for paper co-pies at the Media Center in advance.The seating plan is available in the Media Centre.

Mixed ZoneThepurposeoftheMixedZoneistoallowjournaliststotalktotheathletesabouttheirperformancesastheyleavethefieldimmediatelyafterthecompetition.All athletes should leave the stadium through the Mixed Zone and it is the only

place where athletes can be interviewed after their competition. Itisuptotheindividualathletetodecidewhetherornottotalktothemedia.Any special arrangements, such as longer personal interviews with an athlete, should be done via the respective head of media or other contact person.

The Leoni Square is the area just outside the Stadium where athletes, staff, fami-lies,friendsandspectatorscantakeabreakfromthecompetitionsandrelaxinthe shade, visiting the stalls and tasting some real Italian cusine.The Leoni Square after the competition will be animated by national and inter-national bands on stage. OMEGAhasbeeninvolvedinathleticstimekeepingformorethan80years.In1932,itspocketwatchchronographswerealreadyconsideredthemostreliable instruments available for measuring world-class performance at spor-ting events and OMEGA’s reputation was such that the International Olympic Committee(IOC)askedthefirmtosupplyallsportstimingdevicesforuseattheOlympic Games to be held that year in Los Angeles.
