• to promote regional cooperation among scientists and engineers, and to advance the research front in the field of earthquake engineering;

OBJECTIVES

• to contribute, support and play an active role in organising research and educational activities in Europe in the field of earthquake engineering;

• to play an active role in all aspects of mitigation of the effects of earthquakes in Europe and to set a model for other national, regional and international organisations to follow in advancing earthquake risk mitigation.

• Organising regular conferences, regional seminars, workshops, symposiums, panel discussions, fairs and exhibitions on earthquake engineering topics;

ACTIVITIES

• Exchanging information, data and expertise for establishing data banks;

• Preparing joint projects for extending the technical cooperation among its Members on earthquake engineering related topics;

• Providing the publication of research reports, brochures, catalogues, bulletins, technical journals, newspapers, and books in earthquake engineering;

• Conducting investigations and research within its objectives and activities by establishing Task Groups within the Association or through experts and consultants.

Motivation and Impact

1. To enhance communication with earthquake engineers and related institutions in Europe by means of expanded electronic and printed Newsletter, Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering and published books in the GGEE Book Series

2. To organise earthquake engineers and earthquake related organisations under the EAEE umbrella

3. for increasing the lobbying capabilities and influence in local, national and EU scales

EAEE’s Earthquake Protection Policy Statement: Summary

1. Potentially destructive earthquakes occur regularly in Europe. 2. Buildings and facilities constructed to today’s codes are

unlikely to be heavily damaged by expected earthquakes. 3. Most of the built environment was created before these

codes were formulated and enforced4. Many buildings and facilities (which include schools, hospitals,

and highway structures) are unsafe by today’s standards. 5. Many historic centres of huge cultural importance are at risk. 6. The technical means to substantially reduce this risk are now

available.7. The EAEE considers it unacceptable that European

citizens are daily exposed to major risks to their life which are well-understood and avoidable.

8. EAEE calls on the EC and the European Parliament to help create an earthquake-safe environment for all European citizens
