Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy

A deep-rooted consideration for the natural world infuses each and every Abercrombie & Kent journey.

A&K believes passionately that travel should both respect the natural environment and benefit the indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. For over 30 years, A&K has been intimately involved in the support of these communities, their environments and their ecosystems.

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, guided by Abercrombie & Kent Vice Chairman Jorie Butler Kent, facilitates our commitment to socially and ecologically responsible travel worldwide, as well as helping our guests to become actively involved in these efforts. Every Abercrombie & Kent office plays an important hands-on role in its community, proudly sponsoring projects directly benefiting the local people and environment.

In Florence, AKP funds are helping restore the Basilica of Santissima’s Giambologna Chapel to its former glory. Guests can visit the chapel with one of the restorers and learn about the meticulous work being undertaken.

SCOTLAND & IRELAND Both Scotland and Ireland have much to offer, from rugged, wild countryside to absorbing history and some of the best museums, galleries and castles.

PORTUGAL Less known than its Iberian neighbour, Portugal has charm in spades with its bijou villages, mountaintop palaces, walled towns and of course its Port wine.

SPAIN Architecture in Barcelona, art in Madrid, Moorish monuments in Granada, and a vibrant cuisine makes Spain a destination for all.

GERMANY Boasting Europe’s capital of contemporary culture and some of the continent’s most beautiful scenery, Germany surprises in so many ways.

POLAND Full of treasures, Poland is one of Eastern Europe’s emerging jewels. It’s full of medieval architecture, bold mountain landscapes, a rich Jewish heritage and a hip art scene in its capital.

AUSTRIA Spectacular alpine landscapes and cultured cities plus an impressive classical musical heritage and rustic food and wine experiences.

TURKEY European but with a dazzling touch of the East, Turkey is nothing short of exotic. It has a rich history, an exquisite cuisine, glorious beaches and dramatic landscapes.

RUSSIA The world’s largest nation boasts a fascinating history and equally mesmerising monuments, glittering St Petersburg and the Hermitage, Moscow and the Kremlin and the charming Volga River.

MONTENEGRO This small Balkan country is packed with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline.

CROATIA Ancient walled cities, a glittering coastline and a fascinating historic heritage, Croatia is a hidden jewel on the Adriatic.

ITALY Glorious art, architecture, food, fashion and wine give Italy its unparalleled sophistication and its landscapes are breathtaking too – rolling hills of vineyards and olive groves, rugged coastlines, lakes and mountains.

FRANCE Food, wine and romance, France has it all. Glamorous coastal towns and sublime seaside villages, markets bursting with fresh produce, vineyards galore and some of the world’s finest hotels make it the quintessential luxury destination.

HUNGARY This Central European country has seen civilisations come and go and as such has a multitude of architectural marvels from Roman ruins and medieval town houses to baroque churches, neoclassical public buildings and Art Nouveau structures.

Page 12: Europe Brochure 2016

EuropeEurope is a treasure trove of dazzling cities and sophisticated cultures, enchanting rural scenes and sparkling coastlines, each country with its own unique heritage, history and architecture promising endless fascination for discerning travellers.

Whether it’s a gourmet journey around Italy, sailing a luxury yacht on the Adriatic Coast, barging along the canals of France or a train trip through Scotland, there is a destination and style of journey to suit every individual traveller.

While choosing a destination can provide a pleasurable challenge, accommodation options are myriad- iconic establishments vie with charming country inns and seductive contemporary hotels rival the intimacy of river cruise vessels. Ensuring the perfect blend of elements for each individual is what A&K does best.

when to Go

The Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines and hinterlands generally have a mild winter, with magnificent sunshine during the summer (June – August). Refreshing sea breezes make sunbathing very pleasant. Heading north and away from the coast, the climate is generally continental, with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The best time to travel in Europe is in spring and autumn. Avoid the European holiday season, when tourist numbers are very high.

At the top of every visitor to Turkey’s must-see list is Ephesus. It’s the best-preserved Classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean and for its sheer size and grandeur leaves visitors breathless. But most travellers will see it during the day with a crowd. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience A&K can arrange for the entire site to be opened privately with an evening performance of the Izmir Symphony Orchestra followed by an exquisite open-air dinner against the backdrop of the Library of Celsus.

SECRET gARdEnS oF vEnICE

A&K has a fleet of 20 beautiful hotel barges at its disposal. If you are looking for a European holiday with a focus on fine food, good wines, beautiful landscapes and an exciting new destination each day without ever leaving home, then canal and river cruising is for you. It is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to discover rural Europe, without the crowds and in great comfort.

Canal & River Cruising

VeSSelS The exclusive vessels we recommend all have charming cabins with private facilities, central heating/air-conditioning and portholes/windows. All offer exceptional service with distinctive dining and include spacious lounges and sundecks, some with Jacuzzi. Cruises are six nights in duration and operate from March to October.

FooD & wine One of the major highlights of any European sojourn is the regional cuisine. On board, your chef is a master whose gastronomic creations guests often rate higher than those in top restaurants. The vessel’s pantry is supplemented with fresh produce bought from lock-keepers’ gardens or local markets.

Before you wake each morning, a crew member has already been ashore to collect fresh breads, croissants and pastries while the coffee brews. Lunch will be a selection of salads, pâtés, quiches and cheeses, with a four or five-course dinner each night. Enjoy regional specialities and the finest wines handpicked from the cellar.

Day 1: london - Hampton court Palace. Arrive at the designated meeting point in London for an English Cream Tea at 3pm before being transferred to the barge which is moored alongside Hampton Court. Champagne reception and welcome by the Captain and crew. Dinner on board (D). Magna Carta

Day 2: Hampton court Palace – runnymede. This morning there is ample time to explore Hampton Court Palace, the magnificent Tudor home of Cardinal Wolsey and then Henry VIII and used as a Royal residence until Victorian times. Wander through Henry’s great hall, the enormous kitchens and haunted gallery and see his chapel, still used for worship today and with the finest Tudor ceiling in existence. Outside, the gardens are stunning, with features such as The Great Vine, the oldest in the country still producing grapes and the famous maze. After lunch, enjoy your first cruise on the Royal River Thames through several locks and follow the meandering course upstream to an overnight mooring near Runnymede (B,L,D). Magna Carta

Day 3: runnymede – windsor. After breakfast there is an option to use the spa facilities of the newly refurbished Runnymede-on-Thames hotel including pool, sauna and steam room. Beauty therapies, massages and other treatments are available but are best booked in advance. Later this morning cruise to a mooring right in the heart of Windsor, passing the meadows of Runnymede, the Magna Carta Memorial and Magna Carta Island. Here in 1215 King John faced the barons and was forced to put his seal on the document which became the very first Bill of Rights and from which your vessel takes its name. After lunch on board, an excursion is scheduled to Windsor Castle. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066 and lived in for over 900 years by the Royal Family, this is the largest inhabited castle in the world.

Explore the State Apartments and St George’s Chapel, see Queen Mary’s Dolls House and enjoy the far-reaching views from the castle’s elevated fortress position (B,L,D). Magna Carta

Day 4: windsor – cookham. Leaving Royal Windsor behind cruise up to Boveney lock for a private tour of Dorney Court. This very special home has been owned by the Palmer family for more than 450 years passing from father to son through 13 generations. King Henry VIII stayed here and the manor house has been regularly used as a film location. Continue cruising past the fabulous waterside homes of Bray and Maidenhead, Boulters Lock (made famous in Victorian times) and into the spectacular Cliveden Reach where there is special permission to moor at the house itself. Cliveden was once owned by the Astor family, though the original house dates back to 1666. The property has glorious gardens that include a parterre, Chinese water garden and wonderful topiary and was, of course, the scene of much political intrigue and scandal. Late this afternoon cruise to a stunning mooring at Cookham Lock (B,L,D). Magna Carta

Day 5: cookham – Hurley. This morning visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham which celebrates the paintings of one of England’s greatest and most eccentric artists. Wander around the village he once described as ‘Heaven on Earth’ and where he painted much of his work, before cruising through Bourne End and Marlow to the medieval village of Hurley. Tour Peter Freebody’s boatyard nearby and watch the traditional craftsmen at work, building and restoring classic wooden craft as they have done for generations. There is time to explore the ancient village, including one of the oldest inns in the country, Ye Olde Belle, before returning to the hotel barge (B,L,D). Magna Carta

Day 6: Hurley – Henley-on-thames and oxford. This morning cruise through glorious countryside to the final mooring situated along the famous Henley Regatta Rowing Course. After an early lunch you are driven to Oxford for a fascinating tour of Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college, founded by Cardinal Wolsey and then again by King Henry VIII. The magnificent surroundings were also where Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland. Tonight enjoy a Captain’s Farewell Dinner (B,L,D). Magna Carta

Day 7: Henley-on-thames – london. After breakfast, disembark and transfer to the designated drop off point in London (B).

Day 1: arrive trèbes. Transfer from the meeting point in Narbonne to the barge moored in Trèbes. The crew welcomes you aboard with champagne and canapés. After time to settle in dinner is served (D). Enchanté

Day 2: trèbes – Puichéric. A fascinating morning tour of Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, this is the most complete medieval fortified city in existence today with its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defences, which resisted the many armies that tried to storm this glorious Camelot setting. This afternoon, cruise along the 330-year-old canal and gently circle the contours of the land through the dappled Cathedral-like canopy of the plane trees, to Puichéric lock (B,L,D). Enchanté

Day 3: Puichéric - Jouarres. This morning, the cruise descends the trademark locks of the Canal du Midi as the steep relief requires them to be more numerous and deeper. This is a great opportunity to walk or cycle from one lock to the next as Enchanté cruises on, navigating the triple locking system. The afternoon excursion is a wine tour and tasting at the winery of Château Saint Jacques d’Albas in Minervois, one of the few regions to receive the much envied French mark of approval for wines known as A.O.C. (Appellation d’Origine Controlée). This informative tour offers an opportunity to sample wine in situ and find out more about the Languedoc’s long-standing and continuing wine trade (B,L,D). Enchanté

Day 4: Jouarres – roubia. This morning, visit a Benedictine Abbey founded in the 8th century. Nestled in Lagrasse, a village awarded the title of “Plus beaux villages de France” and home to many artisans who have set up workshops in the medieval centre, the restored Abbey was once one of the most prosperous

thanks to Charlemagne’s charter. Sample local cuisine with lunch ashore in a spectacular setting overlooking the Corbières, before returning to Enchanté for the cruise to Roubia. This afternoon, while cruising under the shade of the plane trees which line the canal, pass the canal bridge “l’Epanchoir”, one of the many feats of engineering invented by Pierre Riquet for the Canal du Midi (B,L,D). Enchanté

Day 5: roubia – le Somail. A morning cruise through vineyards and pine trees to the charming and historical village of Le Somail, purpose-built for the Canal du Midi. This bustling little village is situated on the “grand bief”, another engineering feat unique to the Canal du Midi. Take some time to explore the old bookstore of Le Somail. An afternoon excursion to “L’Oulibo”, meaning olive in the Occitan language, a local co-operative olive oil press where you may sample the famous Lucques olive oil. Continue by minibus to Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1210, its hilltop location affords spectacular views (B,L,D). Enchanté

Day 6: le Somail - Sallèles d’aude. Morning excursion to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Time to shop in this bustling canal side town. This afternoon cruise through the locks and narrow bridges of the Robine Canal and cycle into the village of Sallèles d’Aude. Farewell dinner on board (B,L,D). Enchanté
