CASE STUDY

OverviewTo help maintain service levels and margins in the face of rising fuel prices and competitive pressure, French airline and freight carrier Europe Airpost needed to enhance IT efficiency and performance. The company worked with Business Partner Diademys to deploy anexpert-integrated PureFlex solution – enabling the company to deliver business services through aprivate cloud. Consolidates physical footprint by 66 percent, cutting energy and cooling requirements; improves cost-efficiency; reduces application response times by up to 33 percent.

Europe Airpost, now called ASL Airlines France, is a charter passenger airline and air freight carrier that transports cargo for the national postal service and newspapers. Headquartered in Paris, France, the company maintains a fleet of 21 planes.

In the face of a global economic slowdown and rising fuel prices, maintaining profitability is a challenge. Fabrice De Biasio, IT Director at Europe Airpost, explains: “To succeed in this highly competitive industry, you need to offer an efficient service while minimizing expenditure. We saw an opportunity to cut our IT operational costs by adopting a private cloud model.”

To cut costs and free its IT team from routine administration, Europe Airpost consolidated its existing landscape of 100 virtual servers and 250 virtual workstations to an expert-integrated PureFlex solution.

“We chose the PureFlex solution for its scalability, high level of integration and simplicity of management,” says Francis Brisedoux. “The solution provides compute, storage, networking and systems management in a single package, reducing cost and complexity.”

“The increased performance of our PureFlex solution delivers up to a 33 percent reduction in application response times.”

Rapid migrationEurope Airpost implemented a PureFlex solution with 11 Intel® Xeon® processor-based Flex System x240 compute nodes, two Flex System Fabric

EN4093 10Gb Scalable Switches and two SAN Brocade 16 Gb/s switches. It also deployed two IBM Storwize V7000 nodes, with a combination of conventional hard drives and solid-state drives. For a single point of control, the company implemented the Flex System Manager node.

The company worked with Business Partner Diademys to migrate its existing systems to the PureFlex solution.

“Diademys was familiar with our infrastructure and with the PureFlex platform, and ran a comprehensive skills transfer program,” says Francis Brisedoux. “Their experience, combined with the pre-integration of the PureFlex solution, helped us complete the migration inside two months.”

Enjoying the benefits“PureFlex enabled us to consolidate our physical infrastructure from six racks at two data centers to two racks at a single data center – a reduction of 66 percent,” says Francis Brisedoux. “As the dense footprint of our PureFlex solution delivers greater compute performance from fewer processors, we can now run all of our databases, servers and desktops in a single footprint – for significant savings on electricityand cooling.”Europe Airpost formerly ran its Oracle Real Application Cluster (Oracle RAC) on a dedicated multi-server environment. Oracle RAC now runs on a single Flex System compute node within the PureFlex solution, using VMware vSphere hypervisor software and replicated in real time using Veeam software. This consolidation has significantly reduced Europe Airpost’s database costs and greatlyimproved availability.

Space for innovation“Thanks to Flex System Manager, our IT team spends less time on infrastructure management, and more on developing new business services,” says Francis Brisedoux. “We are confident that our PureFlex solution will meet our needs for at least three years – and deliver simple scalability for years beyond. The ability to deliver high-quality services cost-efficiently is vital for our success, and the PureFlex offering is helping us to do just that.”
