Our specialty are multi-functional ice-breakers, which can perform several tasks from traditional ice breaking operations to cable and pipe laying even in arctic conditions.

THE SWITCH

In October 2016, The Switch acquired Wärtsilä’s marine drives business encompassing megawatt-class power drives. The Yaskawa-backed investment includes the products, R&D and manufacturing, enabling The Switch to gain a stronger machine & drive package offering, broader product range and wider market access.

Today, The Switch is focused on developing its core competences and creating broader drive train solutions optimized for marine applications. Additionally, it is broadening its marine offering, an area that is growing with the acceptance of permanent magnet technology.

The marine drive products already used as proven elements within Wärtsilä’s systems have passed various approval requirements. Currently, hundreds of ships are sailing with these rugged drives, making them attractive to other marine customers who are seeking to reduce risk while upgrading to more advanced drive train solutions based on hybrid or 100% electric systems.
