TEAM STATS

1 PACE

Formula: (FGA + 0.47*FTA – OR + TO) / MIN *

40

About: Pace is measured in possessions per

40 minutes, following the logic that a team

which needs less time on the shotclock to end

the possession, has more possessions

available over the course of a game/season.

Note: Pace’s weakness is that it doesn’t

distinguish between offensive and defensive

pace. A team that takes little time to take a

shot may drop in the pace category if it

defends well/forces the opponent to use

most of the 24 seconds.

2 OFFENSE

Offensive rating and eFG%

Formula: Offensive rating is

points per 70 offensive

possessions. EFG% is

(0.5*3FGM + FGM) / FGA

About: Measuring in points

per game is more accurate

than per game since it

accounts for minutes played

(example: overtimes) and

game pace. Example: CSKA

Moscow was just 11th

in

points per game in the

2008/2009 season, but 2nd

in

points per possessions.

Reason: they used much

more time on the shotclock

for their possessions, hence

they had about 10 offensive

possessions less per game

than the league’s fastest

teams.

EFG% accounts for the fact

that a three point shot counts more than a two point shot. Example: Player A takes 6 shots,

makes 3, all two point shots. He produces 6 points on a 50% field goal percentage. Player B

takes 6 shots as well, makes only 2, but both are three point shots. That is 6 points on a 33%

field goal percentage. Under eFG%, both players shoot 50%.

4 REBOUNDING

Offensive rebounding

Formula: Off Reb / (Missed field goals +

missed free throws) * 100

About: Offensive Rebounding percentage is

more accurate than offensive rebounds per

game, since it takes missed shots under

consideration. A team that misses only few

shots has less of a chance for an offensive

rebound. A team that plays at a slow pace, will

take less shots in general.

2 REBOUNDING BY POSITION

Offensive rebounding

Formula: OFF REB % = 100 * (ORB * (Tm MP /

5)) / (MP * (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)).

About: Offensive rebound percentage is an

estimate of the percentage of available

offensive rebounds a player grabbed while he

was on the floor. It is a lot more accurate than

offensive rebounds per game since it adjusts to

minutes played, pace, and how many shots the

team misses.

Page 25: Euroleague Midseason Stats

Defensive rebounding

Formula: DEF REB % = 100 * (DRB * (Tm MP /

turnovers per 100 (individual) plays.

of the percentage of opponent two-point field

goal attempts blocked by the player while he

was on the floor.

to the results of John Hollinger’s PER

8 PLAYER VALUE

2-year unadjusted oncourt/offcourt plus/minus

Source: http://www.in-the-game.org/?page_id=11741

Glossary:

PTS FOR/70 POS = team points scored per 70 possessions while player is oncourt minus team

points scored per 70 possessions while player is offcourt

PTS AG/70 POS = opponent team points scored per 70 possessions while player is oncourt

minus opponent team points scored per 70 possessions while player is offcourt

NET PTS = PTS FOR/70 POS – PTS AG/70 POS

About: Measured per 70 possessions (ca. 40 minutes pace-adjusted). Plus/minus does not

use any sort of common individual boxscore statistics. It is a simple comparison between

team performance (points scored and conceded) while the player is on the court, compared

to team performance while he is on the bench. In order to enable comparison between

oncourt and offcourt performance, every separate category is scaled to 70 possessions.

2-year regularized adjusted plus minus

Source: http://stats-for-the-nba.appspot.com/euroleague-ranking

About: Adjusted plus/minus is an advanced plus/minus method which adjusts to the quality

of opponent players and teammates.
