2019

June

Issue 23

Dear readers,

"EURAXESS – Researchers in Motion" is a European Commission initiative focused on researcher mobility and career development.

Among other activities, EURAXESS supports individual researchers in finding jobs or funding opportunities to make their research stay in Europe a reality.

On the EURAXESS Portal, we encourage you to consult the:

• EURAXESS Job database that lists thousands of vacancies from more than 40 European countries and other regions of the world.

• And the Funding database allowing you to search for the funding programme you need for your mobility or research cooperation project.

Funding organisations, including from Brazil and other Latin American and Caribbean countries can publish their jobs, funding opportunities and scholarships on the portal – for free - to increase their visibility and reach the best candidates worldwide.

To help you identify these opportunities, EURAXESS LAC regularly publishes open calls to fund researchers' mobility and cooperation with European teams. The list combines funding opportunities open to both Brazil and other LAC countries.

The jobs, grants and fellowships announced are organised by funding organisations (including private ones). In section 1, you’ll find calls funded by the European Commission, in section 2, calls launched by individual EU member states or associated countries with or without LAC partners, and in section 3, calls promoted by LAC institutions. All of them are open to researchers from at least some Latin America and the Caribbean countries. In section 4, you’ll find all the calls that were listed in previous editions of this document and that are still open.

We remain at your disposal to discuss any queries you may have regarding your mobility projects.

Your EURAXESS LAC Team

EURAXESS LAC Funding opportunities is a list of open calls to fund researchers’ mobility, compiled by the EURAXESS LAC team.

The information contained in this publication is intended for personal use only. It should not be taken in any way to reflect the views of the European Commission nor of the Delegations of the European Union in the region.

Please email [email protected] or [email protected] with any comments on this list, contributions you would like to make, if you think any other colleagues would be interested in receiving this document, or if you wish to unsubscribe.

Grants & Fellowships

1 European Union Many Horizon 2020 calls of interest or specifically

targeting Brazil or Latin America are still open

The European Union’s Horizon 2020 – Work programme 2018-2020, including preliminary information on all calls to be launched until 2020 has now been published.

SEE HERE FOR CALLS SPECIFICALLY OPEN TO BRAZIL. Read HERE CONFAP and the EU Delegation to Brasilia’s list of calls potentially interested for Brazil.

SEE HERE FOR CALLS SPECIFICALLY OPEN TO LAC RESEARCHERS AND INSTITUTIONS

Horizon 2020 is the EU funding programme for research and innovation running from 2014 to 2020 with a €80 billion budget. H2020 supports scientifically-excellent research, innovation, and technological development, through collaborative and innovative research projects as well as grants and fellowships to individuals set out in the Horizon 2020 work programme. The vast majority of this funding is allocated on the basis of competitive calls open to applications from researchers, businesses and other interested organisations located in any of the EU Member States or countries associated to Horizon 2020.

It is open to the world, so Brazilian and LAC researchers and institutions are very welcome to get involved.

The final Work Programme for Horizon 2020 covers the budgetary years 2018, 2019 and 2020, representing an investment of around €30 billion.

Access all open calls on the Horizon 2020 Funding & tender opportunities Portal. One can filter by keyword, programme part, focus area, cross-cutting priority.

Organisations from any sector and country, including LAC countries can

participate in H2020 projects.

Only organisations from the Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Mexico and

Trinidad and Tobago are not eligible for direct automatic funding by the

European Commission, unless clearly stated in the call. It is suggested that

Brazilian and Mexican organisations check their local co-funding schemes to

support their participation (here for Brazil, and here for Mexico).

Please, note that all Latin American and Caribbean individual researchers

are eligible to funding by MSCA and ERC.

SWEDEN (SCAS) incoming fellowships

programmes

2.25.1 SCAS General Fellowship Programme

The Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) offers a General Residential Fellowship Programme open to scholars from all countries. The programme gives fellows the opportunity to concentrate on their own research interests, free from the teaching and administrative obligations of ordinary university life. Fellows are, however, expected to be active members of the scholarly community of the Collegium and to participate in seminars and academic events beyond their own fields of specialization.

WHO? At the time of application, the candidate must have held a PhD (or equivalent degree) for at least three years. Early career scholars must have a promising track record of independent achievements beyond the post-doctoral level, including significant publications, and be active in international fora.

Senior candidates (those who have held a PhD for at least ten years) must have demonstrated a track record of significant and original research achievements over a sequence of years and be active at the international forefront of their research fields.

Scholars may apply for a full academic year or one semester.

Applications may be submitted two to three years in advance of the period for which candidates wish to come. However, the deadline for the academic year 2020/21 is on 1 July 2019.

2.25.2 SCAS Fellowships at the Natural Sciences Programme

The programme is aimed at advancing cutting-edge research in the natural sciences, as well as at bridging the gap between these and the humanities and social sciences. The programme initially runs over five years.

The focus of the Natural Sciences Programme is on research that involves synthesis, data analysis and conceptual and theoretical work. There are no research laboratories at the Collegium, but in its immediate vicinity there are extensive such facilities. However, it is envisaged that scholars while in residence will primarily use such facilities as resources for intellectual encounters and dialogues rather than to conduct their own research. There are four thematic foci of the programme:

• Theoretical Biology

• Human Brains and Societies

• Measurable Man

• Exoplanets and Biological Activity on Other Worlds

The two core components of the programme are residential fellowships and a series of symposia. Fellowships are normally awarded for either one academic year or one semester, although short-term visits (at least three months) are possible. Such a short-term visit must still be realized within the frames of either the autumn or spring semester though.

WHO? At the time of application, the candidate must have held a PhD (or equivalent degree) for at least three years.

Deadline: 31 October 2019.

The Collegium is a scholarly

community where Fellows

pursue research of their own

choosing in a context of

interdisciplinary dialogue and

cooperation. The ambition is

to provide an optimal

research environment. SCAS

hosts senior scholars from all

over the world as well as

early-career scholars, mainly

from the Pro Futura Scientia

Programme, most of them

nominated by Swedish

universities but many with a

scholarly background from

other countries.

The Natural Sciences

Programme of the Swedish

Collegium is a newly

launched research

programme funded by The

Erling Persson Family

Foundation and The Knut and

Alice Wallenberg Foundation.
