While Jesus was
speaking, a woman
from the crowd called
out and said to him,
“Blessed is the womb
that carried you and
the breasts at which
you nursed.” He
replied, “Rather, blessed are those who
hear the word of God and observe it.”
Today’s Gospel reading (Luke 11:27-
28) is short and to the point, hence it is
reproduced in total above. There are
some that point to Jesus’s response as
a slight against, or a downplaying of, His
mother. But who has heard the word of
God more fully than Mary? Who has
observed more completely what the
Lord has revealed to her than she who
said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord”?
No, this is not a rebuke of Mary or of
those who see her as being singularly
blessed. It is an answer that helps us
realize the deeper reality—Mary is
blessed not primarily because she is His
mother, but because she has truly
received God’s word, and observed it.
When meditating on Scripture, it is
helpful to note which questions bubble
to the surface, and there are two
obvious ones in this instance: what is
the word of God spoken to Mary, and
how does she observe it? Lest we think
that the word of God is primarily a rule-
book, listen to the first words spoken
from God, through an angel, to Mary:
“Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you
… Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have
found favor with God … nothing is
impossible for God” (Luke 1:28,30, 37).
Are these the words of a task-master
imposing regulations? Is this the
introduction to a policy-manual, a divine
“How-to” book? No, these are the words
of consolation, joy and love. Through His
word, God seeks to affirm Mary that He
is with her—she is not alone! That no
matter what, this is enough; He is
enough. And Mary “observes” these
words by noticing how the Lord is with
her, working in her life, “pondering all
these things in her heart.”
My friends, Christianity does entail
living a virtuous life. Jesus does speak
of how to behave; He gives us an
authentic morality to abide in. But the
words of God spoken to you and me is
not primarily a rule-book, but those of a
loving friend who is truly with us. He
really is enough, even in the impossible
moments. Along with our striving for
virtue, take the opportunity to receive
His love and to “observe” the Word of
God active in your life today. Jesus tells
us in so doing we will be blessed.
Peace, Deacon Eric

SYNOD: OPEN SMALL GROUPS: OUR APOLOGIES
We want to extend a sincere apology for anyone
seeking our Open Synod Groups this past weekend;
some of our time slots were not facilitated, due to
our internal communication error, and we are so
sorry. So, Lord, thank you for the humility moment,
and parishioners, please forgive us! Many Open Syn-
od Small Groups did start here at Saint John’s.
Word on the street from those able to attend is that
these are very worthy experiences. We are keeping
all of our time slots available for this coming weekend, we’ve ensured we have
facilitators available, and we thank you for giving us some grace and hope you
will still join us! While we hope you sign up in advance, ALL ARE WELCOME to
drop in to any of our arranged times:
• 5:30-7:30 P.M. Saturdays
• 9:30-11:30 A.M. Sundays
• 11:30 A.M.-1:30 P.M. Sundays
• 6:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesdays
Any of these not working for you? Contact Joe Block to see about forming
your own small group synod sessions—all you need is a handful of people will-
ing to answer our Archdiocesan Shepherd’s call to share their thoughts and
prayers. www.sjolc.org/synod-small-groups, [email protected]

his topic “The World We Live In.” Don spends countless hours
praying and preparing his talks, so it's always worth a listen! As
always the meeting will start and finish with prayer. Newcomers
are welcome, so if you have always wondered about the group,
come join us and see what we are all about! We'd love to get to
know you!
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY IS OCTOBER 23-24:
WITNESS OF LIFE Pope Francis invites us to celebrate World Mission Sunday with
the entire church on the weekend of October 23-24. The theme of
the weekend is “Witness of Life,” as we recognize all those who
“cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard (Acts
4:20)” and share their testimony of love and compassion in their
hearts, embracing “everyone, everywhere” (World Mission Mes-
sage, Pope Francis). This year, as an example of this theme, we
highlight the passionate calling of Sister Rose Hang Vu from our
archdiocese and her ministries in south and north Vietnam. The
World Mission Sunday Collection supports the many activities of
the Mission Church in more than 1,100 struggling areas through-
out the world, including Vietnam. Please support these mission
diocese by offering prayers and financial gifts during World Mis-
sion Sunday. You can contribute to this appeal here at Saitn
John’s, or at https://centerformission.org/contribute-donation-
form/

A NOTE FROM OUR FALL
FESTIVAL CHAIRPEOPLE COVID-19 is still present nearly every-
where, and our church community is
no exception. Saint John’s and its
staff has an important role to play in
our lives by continuing operations to
best serve all of us. Please thank
Father Tom for allowing the Fall Festi-
val, Marathon and Discipleship Sunday
committees to host this year’s Fall
Festival weekend September 25-26. He
helped all of us stay encouraged and
plan this special event.
A special thank you to all of you, the
parishioners, school families and vol-
unteers who came to have fun over the
Fall Festival weekend. We were all ready to come out together to
the events, and your support made it all successful: the Mara-
thon, games, Mass, live music in the big tent, DJ Parker on the
lawn, award-winning smoked pulled pork, cake walk, corn “holy,”
bingo, cork pull, grand raffle, Padre Pio relics, Discipleship Sunday
activities and much more! So many people contributed their time,
encouragement and prayers. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.
Congratulations to Mark Bannick who won the $2500 Grand
Raffle!

SAINT JOHN’S SCHOOL
CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH Thank you so much for all who volun-
teered at the Color Marathon on Septem-
ber 25. Your willingness to give so freely
of your time and service is greatly appre-
ciated. This year’s event brought in much-
needed funds (a little more than $27,000),
which will go directly to support the im-
portant work that we do here at Saint
John’s School. Thanks to your efforts, we
will be able to continue meeting the
needs of families who truly need this as-
sistance and provide in many ways for
the staff. Again, I thank you so much for
your willingness to donate your time and
talent. Your efforts contributed greatly to
the success of this event. I appreciate your continued volunteer
involvement with our beloved school, Saint John’s of Little Cana-
da!
With much gratitude, Gretchen Hopeman and the entirety of

Jesus uses tough language, but we
are called to be generous with all of our
gifts. Not just the ones we pick and
choose, but especially the one that means
the most to us. That includes our time in
prayer to God, our talent in participating in
parish ministries and our treasure
