The barbers cut and dressed the hair and trimmed the beards of their customers, and also pared the nails and pulled out hairs with tweezers. Mangalak kuliyal/Mangalasnana” is a ritual bath held separately in both houses prior to the wedding day. The groom’s face, body and arms are smeared with turmeric and coconut milk by his cousins and close relatives. The barber is invited to give him a haircut and his sister’s husband or maternal cousin takes him for a bath. In the bride’s house her cousins apply the paste on her body and face. Her brother’s wife or an older lady from her family takes her for her bath after which she wears a new sari, gold jewelry and black bangles.

The groom does the shaving, pedicure and manicure and the bride pedicure and manicure with the help of a barber.

The barber was assigned with the job of removing hairs and nails by cutting on the occasion of auspicious functions like marriage, tonsuring etc.

As the barber is doing this on auspicious days like marriage etc, he is called as ம கலவைனஞ maṅkala-viṉaiñaṉ

The barber is doing his job at daytimes only. Therefore he is called as பக வைனயாள pakal-viṉai-y-āḷaṉ.

As he is using knife, scissors, nail cutters which hurt the customer inadvertently at nights, the barber can not be summoned to do the job at night. Therefore he is called as இரா ெசா லாதவ irā-c-collātavaṉ.

As he is doing all these works on the occasion of auspicious functions, he is called as ம கலி² maṅkali, ம கலிய maṅkaliyaṉ in Tamil and మంగల [ maṅgala ] in

Telugu.

Tuesday is an auspicious day to undertake animal husbandry related activities, especially cows and bulls, and to wage a crusade against evil. Activities involving the use of weapons and fire are, however, prohibited on Tuesdays. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are generally considered very auspicious. Sunday and Monday are only medium-auspicious. Tuesday is ruled by Mars or Mangala. Mars is also known by the name of Angaraka, Kujan, Agneya and this all indicates that the planet is red and is associated with heat. He is also believed to kick start fights and is also considered to be responsible for cuts and bruises on the body. He is also believed to create unwanted competitions among people. Therefore it is better to avoid solemnizing marriage (only) on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Also note that irrespective of the day (including Saturday and Tuesday), after Sunset, during night time, auspicious ceremonies can be conducted. There is no vaara (day)-dosha, during night time.

Red being the most suitable colour for Tuesdays, wearing red clothes and keeping red flowers at home on the day may prove to be good. Men shall be courageous on the day and Tuesdays are the most suitable days to settle long-standing issues with the police and army. Direct discussions and meetings with police and army personnel on Tuesdays can be fruitful. Administrative and hard laborious work should be undertaken on Tuesdays. Armed with divine blessings for success, human beings may fearlessly take steps to defeat enemies on Tuesdays.

Sanskrit Pundits are trying to connect the word म गल maṅgala with root called म ग ्maṅg. That attempt is absolutely incorrect as म गल means Auspiciousness and

good omen. However the so called root म ग ्maṅg means nothing but appearing

beautifully. There is no relativity between म ग ्maṅg and म गल maṅgala.

According to Apte’s Sanskrit Dictionary, the root म ग ्maṅg means

म ग ्maṅg 1 U. (म गित-ते) 1 To go, move. -2 To appear beautiful (मिग म डने); र याकषमम गरे (अ ाः) Bk.14.1.

Tamilians considered marriage as auspicious and good in one’s life. Hence the word

ம கல maṅkalam denoted marriage and marriage badge called tāli .

There is no such meanings in Sanskrit for the word म गल maṅgala. With the words

ितसरः and सू म ् , the word म गल maṅgala merely denotes auspicious cord or string,

the auspicious thread worn by a married woman round her neck as long as her husband lives.

There is difference between an auspicious cord ம கல திர or string and marriage

badge (tāli). ம கல திர maṅkala-sūttiram merely means an auspicious cord.

II Etymology of म गलम ्Mangalam and ம ச ¹ mañcaḷ = Turmeric

TUMERIC IS GOOD FOR HEALTH BUT ONE SHOULD DRINK IT WITH MILK TO ACHIVE THE FULL BENEFIT OF IT. It is a good anti-bacterial for those chronically weak or ill. Therefore from the word ந naṉku (good), the word

denoting turmeric was derived.

Sanskrit pundit wrongly connected the word म जु mañju with म ज ्mañj which is not

the appropriate root having the same meaning for the word म जु mañju .

Sanskrit pandits’ such claims are without any logic or etymological proof. From Tamil only, Sanskrit has borrowed the above mentioned words.
