Etudes for the Everyday launch exhibition, 2013
Presented by Osage Art Foundation
Sponsored by Hong Kong Arts Development Council
Originally meaning “study” in French, étude refers to a short musical composition, typically for one instrument, written as an exercise to improve one’s technique, while also played for its artistic value.
The practice of art, regardless of media or form, can be said as a lifelong endeavour to advance oneself technically, aesthetically, intellectually, ethically and spiritually.
This compilation presents 100+ études, contributed by cultural and art practitioners in Hong Kong to Etudes for the Everyday, a project reflecting on artistic practice in quotidian life. Art here is not confined to conventional disciplines. It is a mode of sensing, responding and acting. What will we learn if we practise this everyday? Will our lives change? Will a different energy flow in our city?
Etudes was first shared with the public in a launch exhibition in 2013. The audience was invited to contemplate on the études, and offer thoughtful feedback. In the following year, we shared the project in workshops, found our way in sited routes, and reached out through online channels. In 2015, the project set off for Taiwan, in search of coincidental études on the road. Some directions for practice, emerging from these experiences, are suggested at the end of this practice guide, as a point of departure for further interpretation.
As artistic sensibility resounds, we hope you would discover refreshing possibilities—for ourselves and our world.

Etudes for the Everyday started out as a response to growing unrest and tension in this city. Our proposition was: can the practice of art, in all its manifestation, spark off a different energy loop?
Over the past year, artistic sensibilities resounded in numerous beautiful moments. Returning to the day-to-day reality, clouded by aggravating discontents, can art strike a chord?
Most of the time, art does not change things practically. But it inspires new ways of sensing and sense-making. Beyond inertias, stretching our imagination, it casts light on what is possible.
Consciously, unknowingly, some practices moved us:
Early Spring, a housewife aired citrus peels on the concrete pavement, like a courageous blossom. For 20 years, an old gentleman has been engraving Chinese characters on stones; he shared them generously in an open-air “gallery” by the road.On her way home, an exchange student sent a complimentary message—in the midst of a grey day.
To their own rhythm, these unexpected études strike a chord and resonate. Gentle counterpoints to the cacophony of the everyday.
The coda of Etudes, or a prelude to the next movement, is an online platform. With this guide as a point of departure, please practise in your own way, and share if you wish.
Let us feel a different pulse in resonance.
