January 2019

Dearest Parishioners, Friends, and Neighbors,

As a great fan of musical theatre, there is a song from the Rogers and Hammerstein classic musical “The King and I” that is coming to mind. It’s called “Getting To Know You.” The first verse is appropriate for us: “Getting to know you, getting to know all about you. Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me.”

The purpose of this 2019 Guide Book and Directory is to help you to get to know your own parish better as well as something about the other three. You will come to learn of our varied histories, groups, activities, and programs. Thanks to our journeying On Mission for the Church Alive! together, we can all share in what the other parishes offer. Hopefully over time we will get to know each other and get to like each other!

Please note that this guidebook is FREE due to the patrons and advertisers herein. Remember to support them whenever you can.

We are striving to be a welcoming community of faith and a beacon of hope to the locations of our parishes. For that to happen, we must all do our part. Please continue to bring God’s love to all you meet at Mass and on the streets. May God continue to bless us in this mission!

See you in Church!

Fr. Jim Gretz, Administrator

Parish Mission StatementThe mission of All Saints Parish is to expand the Kingdom of God by showing people the way to salvation through the Eucharist, in our faith, our compassion, and our actions. This is showcased in our four core values, namely: Prayer - Dependence on God and Communicating with God; Ministry - Having knowledge of the faith and putting it into practice; Christian Attitude - Being welcoming, hospitable, compassionate, caring and loving of everyone; Stewardship - Care for the spiritual and physical assets of the Parish, namely our time, talent, and treasure.

Parish HistoryThe history of All Saints Parish, as that of most parishes, began with a group of individuals wishing to practice their faith in their own community. In the fall of 1901, a petition was drawn up asking Bishop Phelan to establish a parish and send a pastor. In April 1902, the Reverend Adolf Keller was appointed. Fr. Keller knew there would be difficulties in creating the parish. He insisted that the parish become known as All Saints, as the intercession of the Church in Heaven would be what he needed to accomplish the task.

Throughout our history, there have been many joys and sorrows. Among the joyful events we recall moments like: the dedication of the first church building in 1902, the dedication of the current church in 1915, the establishment of the school in 1902, celebrations of the sacraments, to name a few. We recall the sorrows as well: the floods in 1936, 1986, and 2004, the loss of the school, parishioners who died, as well as the departure of beloved pastors and assistants.

Our participation in the parish today gives us the opportunity to build on that history. Through the intercession of “All the Saints” and our generous parishioners we can serve many generations to come.

Parish Mission StatementWe, the parishioners of Holy Spirit Parish, are empowered by the presence of the Father, redeemed by the Son, and led by the Holy Spirit. Filled with the Spirit, we as Catholics, communally and individually, worship, minister, evangelize, catechize, and serve the needs of others. Like the disciples at Pentecost, we grow daily in the Holy Spirit.

Parish HistorySt. Ann’s Church was founded in 1874 as the first Catholic Church in Millvale and consisted of about seventy-five German and thirty English speaking families. Some of these early German Catholics founded their own school in 1876 in an effort to educate their children in Christian values and to maintain their German heritage. This German population continued to grow and in 1886, they received permission to build their own church and separate from St. Ann Church; they named this new church St. Anthony’s. In 1887, St. Ann’s built its own school. Both parishes grew and thrived in Millvale and as a result both erected new church buildings. A new St. Anthony’s Church was constructed in 1914, and St. Ann’s Church was completed in 1924. In 1936, as St. Anthony’s prepared for its fiftieth anniversary celebration, a tragic fire caused great damage to the interior of the Church and major repair work was done.

Due to declining enrollment and rising expenses, in 1989 St. Anthony and St. Ann schools merged into Holy Spirit Regional School. In 1994, due to a declining number of parishioners and rising expenses, St. Anthony and St. Ann Churches merged into Holy Spirit Parish. Both churches were maintained until February 1998 when St. Ann’s was closed and St. Anthony’s church building officially became the church of Holy Spirit Parish.

Parish Mission StatementThe Mission of St. Bonaventure Parish is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Because we have a personal relationship with Him, we are called to proclaim and give witness to the Word of God. We are guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished and strengthened by the sacramental life of the church. In Christ-like fashion we are committed to reaching out with love to all of God’s people in our community through service, prayer, Catholic Education, evangelization, and stewardship. With the help of the Holy Spirit we strive to fulfill Christ’s final message: “Go and make disciples of all people.”

Parish HistoryThe formation of St. Bonaventure began on February 19, 1957, when the Diocese of Pittsburgh purchased the former Henderson Mansion and its surrounding property for the parish.

The parish was created on June 5, 1957 by decree of the Most Rev John F. Deardon, bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh at that time. Eight days later, on June 13, 1957, the Rev Francis A Glenn was installed as the first pastor. Joy filled the mansion on Friday, June 14, when the First Mass was said. Some 112 people were present for the historic service.

Prior to the opening of the church/school building on June 14, 1959, Masses were celebrated in the living room of what is now the Parish Center. Children would sit on the stairs, while their parents and other adults sat on chairs. As attendance grew, worshipers crowded into other rooms of the building and onto the lawn. The parish was blessed to have 10 consecutive Sundays without rain. In August, Masses were moved to the Undercliff Volunteer Fire Company building on Mount Royal Boulevard. By September, more than 1,000 people were attending Sunday service.

The parish began its religious education program for children in October 1957, following several months later by a program for high school students. By May of the following year, some 135 children were attending the grade school program and 65 more were attending the secondary sessions.

On May 11, l958, ground was broken for the new $445,000 school-church complex. St. Bonaventure dedicated its 700 seat church with a solemn Mass presided over by Bishop John Wright on June 14, 1959, the second anniversary of the parish’s first Mass. The school opened its doors three months later.

By the late 1970’s the parish was experiencing severe growing pains, and a push began to replace the existing church with a new building. In 1981, following much soul searching, the parish council decided to remodel the existing structure. Even though the church was remodeled in the early 1980’s it’s eventually became apparent that a new permanent church was still needed. Ground was broken for the new church on May 21, 1998. Less than one year later, the church was ready and the weekend of April 9-11, 1999, opened a new chapter in our history with the dedication and first liturgies in our new home.

Parish Mission StatementSt. Nicholas Parish is the oldest Croatian Catholic Church in the United States. Our ethnic heritage instills in us a deep abiding faith in Jesus Christ and love for His Blessed Mother. Our church’s magnificent murals by Maxo Vanka continue to remind and inspire us to preserve our rich religious heritage. We are nourished and strengthened by the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to share faith, hope, and love with all God’s people.

Parish HistoryIn the latter half of the 19th century, the Croatian community in the city of Pittsburgh founded a parish to nurture their Catholic faith and preserve their Croatian language and customs. Established in 1894, the Parish was named in honor of St. Nicholas, and became the first Croatian ethnic parish in America.

As the number of Croatian immigrants in Pittsburgh increased, the Parish’s original worship site, a renovated former commercial building on the City’s North Side, was too small. After a parish-wide vote, armed with their recommendation, Fr. Franjo Glojnaric, the native Croatian pastor at St. Nicholas, was granted permission to build a new church building in nearby Millvale. On October 16, 1899, a farm was purchased and temporarily used for parish needs. On January 21, 1900, plans for the new church were unveiled, and by November 25 of that same year, the first Mass was celebrated in the newly constructed church.

Because the Croatian community continued to grow, almost immediately after the Millvale church was started, a second church was approved, and construction began on the city’s North Side where the church also claimed the original Parish as its “mother church,” and retained the heritage of the St. Nicholas name.

In 1921, a fire destroyed much of the Millvale church. In May, 1922, the rebuilt church was rededicated. Most notably, during the 1930s, at the instigation of the Pastor Fr. Albert Zagar, the famed Croatian artist Maxo Vanka was engaged to paint murals that still adorn most of the walls of the Millvale church. The murals are striking with theological and social justice themes, depicting Bible scenes and the Blessed Mother, as well as the Croatian immigration to the United States, the hardships of life, the atrocities of war, and more. The murals are world famous and have been the subject of magazine articles, TV programs, documentary films, etc.

Both St. Nicholas parishes flourished with schools, convents, staff, parishioners, and priests until 1995, when the declining population required the closure of the North Side church and its merger with the Millvale Parish. The North Side church and buildings were razed in 2013 for the much needed reconstruction of Route 28. Today, St. Nicholas Parish in Millvale carries the 19th century spirit of the first Croatian immigrants to Pittsburgh into the 21st century, unified not only by their ethnicity, but most importantly by their Roman Catholic faith.
