Organisation : Department of Communications
Designation : Systems Engineer and Server/ Desktop Support
Duration : June 2000 – October 2004 500 Employees - National
Reporting to Director General - managed and provided all aspects of support from Conceptual Design to Physical Implementation of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) projects.
Within one year of working in the IT Department and being involved on several IT projects, I was promoted to a Systems Engineer and made to oversee all aspects of New Technology Design and Implementation, both on OS/ Server level and the Networking level. Here I gained extensive knowledge and experience in Networking Technologies and Microsoft’s Technologies and other well-known suppliers, VERITAS, Trend Micro, Symantec, HP Open View, IBM Technologies, HP Technologies, Dell Technologies and many others
KEY PROJECT DESIGNED & IMPLEMENTED – 4 YEAR PERIOD
A migration from Windows NT4.0 to Windows 2003 for 500 Users / Desktops and 30 Production Servers, this included a full Router and Switch(s) hardware refresh as well as CISCO IO upgrades
This is an organization that provides ICT Infrastructure Service(s) for Local and National Government, as well as the Private Sector
A secure DMZ was designed to allow for public access to Statistical Information
This secure environment was also part of my design, and was the Public Interface into the organization; this is controlled via complex array of NetScreen Firewalls for access both internally and externally for access to enable Table Updates into a SQL database for client requests
The current in-house design and support for the migration included a full AD lockdown on Desktops/Servers/Applications/User Accounts and all applications were fully automated with a combination of SMS, monitoring using MOM2005 and GFI products
New server consolidation for hardware refresh, most Production Systems were replaced by HP Proliant Blade Servers, and all Exchange Servers were clustered as well as SQL Servers for redundancy
Old networking hardware was also replaced by new CISCO devices, which allowed us a full VoIP to the desktop and all Remote Branches
This is a continual project, and as new technologies arise and are required it is scoped and once the budget is made available, a project is launched
I was also responsible for making recommendations on improving the effectiveness of systems, be it new Software Applications/Technologies, reducing the TCO
All of the above also included Networking Technologies, mainly CISCO PIX, CATALYST Switches, Net Screen Firewall's
All existing telephony technologies were being refreshed and replaced with IP Telephony Systems. This was to reduce the company’s high costs of fixed dialling
