THE TYPE OF INSTALLATION
Correct installation of ETIC fixing systems. The fixings used with ETICS are for push-through installation. The item being mounted is drilled with the same drill diameter (insulation or retaining rail) as the substrate. The fixing is then inserted into the hole through the item being mounted and expanded.
Useful length. For ETICS fixings, the maximum useful length is determined by the fixing. To deter-mine the required useful length, the insulation thickness, the adhesive layer and any non-load-bear-ing layers that exist (old plaster, insulation, etc.) have to be taken into consideration. When fixing through mesh, do not neglect the thickness of the first coat.
LOAD
Not only the construction material and the type of installation are important for selecting the fixing, but also the load to which it is subjected: How great is the force ? In what direction does it act ? And where does it act ? Accordingly, forces are defined by: magnitude, direction and point of application. The forces are specified in kN (kilonewtons – 1 kN ≈ 100 kg), the bending moments in Nm (Newton-metres).
The following loads are especially relevant for selection of the correct fixing:
Fracture forces, i.e. those forces that either lead to a fracture of the anchor base or cause the fixing to fracture or pull out. The average value results from at least 5 individual tests in un cracked building material.
Characteristic fracture forces designate those forces that are reached or exceeded in 95 % of all failure cases (5 % fractile).
Permissible loads are service loads that already include an appropriate safety coefficient – in accor-dance with the approval decisions by the Institut für Bautechnik Berlin (DIBt) [German Institute of Construction Engineering]. These apply only if the approval conditions are complied with.
Recommended loads or maximum service loads include an adequate safety factor.
Calculation of the maximum service load from the fracture forces and/or the characteristic fracture forces is carried out by dividing the respective fracture force by a safety coefficient:
Max. service load = fracture force (F)
safety factor (γ)
Recommended safety factorcompared to the fracture force average value: Plastic fixings γ ≥ 7compared to the characteristic fracture forces Plastic fixings γ ≥ 5

Every fixing poses its own problems. Whether you are a planner or installer, dealer or customer advisor - you will learn everything here about fastening technology:

These safety factors are standard recommendations and should be applied to fixings unless other-wise indicated in the tables of this catalogue. For approved fixings, the safety factor has been lower ed to γ = 2.25 as a result of large numbers of tests, so when approved fixings are used, the load can be optimized.
Fixing through mesh
If the fixings are set through reinforcing mesh, a thin shank is necessary to avoid tearing the mesh and pressing it against the insulating material. Since the loads over the first coat and the reinforce-ment mesh are distributed uniformly, a disk diameter of 60 mm is adequate, regardless of the insulating material. The spacing between fixings (a) is given by:
(n = number of fixings per square metre).
Fixing under mesh
A 60 mm fixing disk can also be used for fixing compression-resistant insulating materials like poly-styrene (PS) and HD mineral fibre panels (MF) under mesh.
If less compression-resistant insu lating materials (WLG 035 mineral wool or mineral wool disk panels) are used, a larger washer,(e.g. fischer DT 90, DT110, DT140) is necessary. This distributes the loads over a large area.
Typical fixing arrangements are used when fixings are under mesh.
Thermal bridges and fixings
The heat conduction of the fixing is of great importance during use in ETICS. Ideally the heat conductivity of the fixing should differ only minimally from that of the insulation, so as to prevent thermal bridges. Heat bridges lead to fast drying of the render covering the fixing head, and can be visible in certain climate conditions
These temporary marks can become permanent due to accumulation of dirt deposits. In this case, the kp value ( punctual thermal bridge influence) is a fixing characteristic value, which can lead to a decrease in thermal insulation as a function of the insulation thickness and the number of fixings.
Termofix and Termoz fixings have the best Chi value classes. By comparison, a 10 mm façade fixing with a steel screw has a kp value of 0.008 W/K.

ETIC SYSTEM TYPES
Basically, there are several types of ETIC systems with approvals which regulate the use of fixings. The following overview is only a guide and cannot replace the approval.
Polystyrene ETICS, glued
(Z-33.41- . . . )The stability results from gluing alone. For new construction, this applies to uncoated concrete and masonry. For old buildings, a load- bear ing substrate must be present (tear-out strength > 0.08 N/mm2) or the non-bearing layers must be removed.
Using non-approved fixings (e.g. fischer Termofix) for structural purposes is strongly recommended, especially for old buildings, and should be coordinated with the system manufacturer. The reduc-tion in thermal insulation due to the thermal bridge effect of fixings used for structural purposes does not have to be taken into consideration if the increase in the heat transfer coefficient is no more than 0.02 W/(m²K).
Rail-fastened PS-ETICS and MF-ETICS
(Z-33.42- . . . )The stability is obtained by a rail fastening with fixings approved by the building authorities, e.g. fischer WS 8N or WS 8L, with additional spot gluing of the insulation panels and surface fixing approved by the building authorities (e.g. Termoz plaster fixing).
It can be used in masonry and concrete, with or without existing render. Tolerance compensation up to 30 mm is possible to allow for projections, e.g. on panel constructions during refurbishment.
The rails are normally manufactured in PVC (flame-inhibiting) or aluminium (non-combustible), depending on the fire regulations and insulation used.
PS, MF, MF composite ETICS with fastened and glued thermal insulation
(Z-33.43- . . . )Stability is achieved by gluing and approved fixings, e.g. Termoz, possibly in combination with insu-lation washer DT 90, DT110 or DT140.
It is equally suitable for use in masonry and concrete, with or without existing render. This makes the system especially suitable for refurbishment projects.
MF composite ETICS with glued mineral fibre composite insulation
(Z-33.44- . . . )Stability is achieved by gluing over the entire surface and approved fixings, e.g. Termoz, possibly in combination with insulation washer DT 90, DT110 or DT140.
For new construction, this refers to uncoated concrete and masonry. For old buildings, a load-bear-ing substrate must be present (tear-out strength > 0.08 N/mm2) or the non-load bearing layers must be removed.
In this case, fixings have to be installed in the edge areas starting from 20 m building height, even with adequate tear-out strength. For systems glued over part of the area, the centre areas must also be fixed.

ETICS with glued ceramic cladding
(Z-33.46- . . . )Stability is achieved by gluing, generally at least 60 % of the panel surface, and by additional fixing with approved fixings, e.g. Termoz.
In order to meet a greater safety requirement for these heavy systems, fixings should always be used with ETICS with ceramic cladding.
ETICS on wooden outer walls
(Z-9.1- . . . )Stability on wooden outer walls of buildings is obtained by direct mounting on the load-bearing wood structure or directly on chipboard or solid wood wall components, and other construction board panels, using e.g. Termofix 6H.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE
2. Basic knowledge of fixing technologyWITH FIXINGS AND ANCHORS
General fundamentals
BUILDING MATERIAL
The substrate and its nature – the building material and the anchorage bases – is decisive for the selection of the fixing. There are differences between concrete, masonry and panel building materials.
Concrete is a building material containing cement that can be divided into two subgroups: standard concrete and light concrete. While standard concrete contains gravel, light concrete includes addi-tives like pumice, expanded clay or Styroprene, usually with lower compression strength. This can sometimes result in less favourable conditions for anchoring fixings. The magnitude of the load- bearing force of a heavy-duty fixing depends, among other things, on the compression strength of the concrete. This is indicated by the numbers in the abbreviations: e.g. the most frequently-appear ing concrete strength C20/25 stands for a cube compressive strength of 25 N/mm².
Masonry building materials Masonry is a composite of bricks and mortar. The compression strength of the bricks is usually higher than that of the mortar, especially in old buildings. Fixings should there-fore be anchored in the bricks if at all possible.
Generally, four groups of masonry bricks are differentiated:
Solid bricks with dense microstructure are very compression-resistant building materials without cavities or with only a low hole area percentage (up to max. 15 %, e.g. as grip recess). They are very well suited for anchoring fixings.
Perforated bricks with dense microstructure (perforated bricks and hollow bricks) often consist of the same compression-resistant material as solid bricks, but are provided with cavities. For fastening higher loads, special fixings should be used that bridge these cavities or fill them.
Solid bricks with porous microstructure usually have a very large number of pores and a low compression strength. Therefore for optimum fastening, special fixings should be used, e.g. fixings with a longer expansion zone or fixings that embed deeper in the material.
Perforated bricks with porous microstructure (light perforated bricks) have a lot of cavities and pores and thus usually low compression strength. Special care is needed for selection and installation of the correct fixing. Fixings with long expansion zone or injection anchors that create a positive fit are suitable – especially in light concrete hollow blocks that have cavities that can be filled with polystyrene.
Panel building materials are thin-walled building materials that often have only low strength – e.g. plasterboard like “Rigips”, “Knauf”, “LaGyp” or “Norgips”; gypsum fibreboard like “Fermacell”, “Rigicell” or chipboard, hard particle board, plywood, etc. For optimum fastening, special fixings have to be selected: cavity fixings, as they are called. These are plastic or metal fixings that engage on the reverse side – fixings that engage with positive fit and can anchor themselves directly on the reverse side of the panel in the cavity.

DRILLING
The building material also determines how drilling is carried out. There are four methods to choose from:
Rotary drilling: Drilling in the non-hammer setting without impact, for perforated brick and building materials with low strength so the hole does not become too large and/or the webs in the per-forated brick don‘t break.
Impact drilling: Rotation and a large number of light impacts with the impact drill, for solid building materials with dense micro-structure.
Hammer drilling: Rotation and a small number of impacts with high impact energy with the hammer drill, also for solid building mate-rials with dense microstructure.
One more tip on drilling without impact: Carbide drills drill faster if they are sharpened similarly to steel drills. There are also special masonry drills.
INSTALLATION
Generally, the following aspects have to be considered during installation:
The edge and axial spacing, as well as the component thickness and width, must be properly observed if the fixing is to hold the required load. Otherwise spalling of the building material or crack forma-tions may occur. For plastic fixings, the general rule is a measured edge spacing 2 x hv (hv = anchor-ing depth) and a measured axial spacing 4 x hv. If the expansion direction of the fixing runs parallel to the component, the edge spacing can be reduced to 1 x hv.
The hole depth must – with few exceptions – be greater than the anchoring depth. This is because functional safety is only ensured if the screw has enough room to extend beyond the tip of the plastic fixing. The respective hole depths for all products are specified in the product tables on the following pages.
Hole cleaning after drilling, e.g. by blowing out or suction, is preferable. An uncleaned hole reduces the grip ! Drilling dust has a negative effect on the proper adhesion of the fixing in the hole.
