■ Case management services are markedlyunderused among ethnic minorities withschizophrenia in the US compared with EuropeanAmericans, report researchers from that country. Theyexamined the use of psychiatric case managementservices among 4250 patients with schizophrenia inSan Diego County, including 718 African Americans,834 Latinos and 2698 European Americans, during the1998–1999 fiscal year. Case management serviceswere received by 1100 patients overall. However, a"disproportionately greater percentage of service use"was observed among European Americans (30.2%)than among Latinos (19.3%) or African Americans(17.4%), the researchers note. These differencesremained after adjusting for confounding variables.Barrio C, et al. Ethnic disparities in use of public mental health casemanagement services among patients with schizophrenia.
