“Live and Become” tells the story of the cultural confusion and lack of true identity that plague a young boy swept away from his mother during a joint American-Israeli rescue mission in director Radu Mihaileanu’s fact-based drama. As thousands of displaced Africans crowd into Sudanese refugee camps, American and Israeli troops organize “Opera- tion Moses.” Zion Uness is one of the New Generation leaders of Israel’s Ethiopian Com- munity. In 1984 at the age of 7, Zion and his family immigrated to Israel as part of Operation Moses, the airlift documented in Radu Mihaileanu’s feature film, “Live and Become.” Born in 1977 in Ethiopia, he crossed Sudan on foot, lived in a refugee camp, and in 1984, was moved to Israel during Operation Moses. He served in the infantry of the IDF and subsequently received a degree in occupational therapy from the University of Haifa. Since that time he has worked to improve Ethiopian–Israeli education and community life, and has spoken widely at Jewish community centers, film festivals, and universities about Ethiopian Jewry. Today, Zion lives in Washington, DC.
