Who are you???

I’m Sofonias Solomon a 4th year architecture student at EIABC. A good performing student in my grades since high school. i plan to became an architect in the future and in addition a leader who can change the world and have an impact. i have many friends and have been working in a team in since i joined univer-sity;our field is given since freshman year by grouping as into partners of two or more.i like to laugh a lot and make fun of all things around me ,if I’m not happy i cant function well so i always try to find things to laugh about.

What would you label as your Strength and Weakness???

What are you like working in a team? Support your answer with the MBTI test by attaching a print screen of your results to your application package

i work in a team like a friend. i always like to listen to others first then give my ideas as suggestions but at time i will defend my ideas reasonably. The hardest moment or me is when some one cant understand me ,then i will be hard to work with because i want to find ways to make them understand wont stop till i get a way.

SECTION 2 AIESEC experience

1. List Down all the positions you have had in AIESEC. Also briefly elaborate on your contribution/ per-formance, as well as the main learning you derived from each role.

I have worked in two portfolios in aiesec, the first is the TM & COM , i was a team leader of design team, that was my first task in aiesec and i got all the basics of ma leadership skills from that position. i had 5 members under that team and we were responsible for the design of posters,t shirts and other pro-motional material. i have acquired the promotional skills and also the basics of leadership skill. i was working in iGCDP after that till now. I have been a team member when i joined. And now i am a project manager of edu power. Of my time working in iGECDP i have acquired a communication skill with more foreigners and also the work-flow of exchange and last i have been working on EXPA n know my way through it.

2. What has been your main achievement and failure in AIESEC in the past?

My main achievement in aiesec i would say is the communication skill with the foreign personnels and officials. The next a achievement is the time management issue i had before have been improved and i have learned to make plans that could help me achieve my goals in a given time. the other is team a skill of team work ,i can say I’m good at team work, i have learned how to handle new people and work with different skilled persons. My failure in aiesec is not getting the clarity of why early, i.e. when i joined at firs i had an idea of what i want to get from aiesec and i wanted to do that only i didn’t understand why we do things in aiesec. That had got me to achieve less in aiesec than i could have had in a year.

3. List the Local/National/International conferences you have attended.

4. Describe how your AIESEC journey impacted you as an individual?

Since i joined AIESEC i have been a changed person on my view about the world;before i was aware of world issues and didn’t know what i can do to an impact on the world. But after, i became aware of some issues an i can have and impact on the world. Personally it made me a have a global mindset. Understanding the simple things get what oth-er people are saying and doing especially the view i have about people from foreign countries. The new things i can learn from a single conversation has an impact on my view.

SECTION 3 GENERAL

1.What is AIESEC to you? Why did you decide to run for EB/LCP of AIESEC EIABC? And What are the qualities that you have that are required for this specific role & what makes you best suited for this role?

AIESEC is life a family and also a friend for me. Its the one thing that i have learned more things than i have learned in school. And in it i could find trustworthy people and make good friends.i decided to run for LCVPiGCDP when i started to work in iGCDP in a project called edu power it made me aware of the change i could bring to my society and since then i was working in iGCDP team and i wanted to make a greater impact than i already have. And the only way i see to do that is by moving for-ward and do more .It has been a year and half since i joined aiesec and i have acquired a leadership skill that could be helpful to work as a LCVP.in addition i am Proactive, Open mind, can Manage a team,English communications Skills and problem solving .

2. What is your vision as a person? And how is EB/LCP experience align with it?

my vision professionally is to become a world renowned architect. But thats not the only thing i want to do; i also want to make a difference in this world not only professionally but also in other means in like becoming a leader of an organization that is focused on world issues. My EB experience i hope will help me became a better leader. By acquiring new skills and develop-ing my other skills. Especially the exposure to the international network and communication. That would make aware of the international market and the opportunities i could use to expand my impact on the world. The profession I’m currently pursuing is also a very competitive and unique to the specific area. I want to take Ethiopian architecture to the world class and make people aware of our most unique edifices and styles. i hope i could get a chance to achieve this and much more.

3.Who is your role model and why?

I have not one role model but more. But in aiesec my role model is Hiwote Negash she is a very great person. She responsible for me joining AIESEC and also during my many hard moments she my motivation to go forward and stay focused. The very basic quality that i admire of her is her leadership quality ;she can being the best in some one and make them better just by showing the way forward. The other is she always reaches up. That is also another thing i admire about he she has thought me if i could dream big i could achieve it.

Page 10: Ethiopia aiesec eiabc lcvp 15 16 lcvp igcdp sofonias solomon

Sofonias SolomonLCVP IGCDP applicant

4.What are your three most substantial personal accomplishments (non-AIESEC), and why do you view them as such?

• I would say the first would be my study i.e. grades. i still have to go higher but I’m close to my goal.• Choice of friends because if it wasn’t for my friends i wouldn’t be like this today

5.What is your vision for AIESEC EIABC 15/16? What legacy would you want to leave behind?

My vision is to get the highest exchange numbers in our LC history. I want 15/16 to be a year that most of the our problems get fixed and we move forward to the next gen with more members and realiza-tions. The legacy i want to leave is to be the first to achieve such a great number in a little time span

6.Describe your leadership style? Explain how your style would be suitable for AIESEC EIABC in it’s cur-rent state?

i would say i am a democratic and transactional leader. i.e. i don’t want to take all the power to make all the decisions ,i would rather share the power with all my team and let them know what they are doing .i would like to recognize good performance and i would like to reward it . i believe that creates the members to reach higher .i want to create a personal connections with all my team members to know them and to recommend them what they need to work on and to help them develop themselves.i think this would help members of our LC to get the better performance and the clarity of why .because the members have lots of potential they only need the motivation and initiation

7.Highlight your time commitment throughout the whole of next year (Academic or otherwise). Ideally, how much time should an LCVP give to his role?

as i am an architecture student it was hard for me to manage my time with my classes and all. but thanks to hiwi she has thought me some ways to manage it. i would make the free time i got between classes and after class to work on AIESEC use the nights and half of the weekend to do my assignments and study. it would ideally take about 15-20 hours a week.

Page 11: Ethiopia aiesec eiabc lcvp 15 16 lcvp igcdp sofonias solomon

Sofonias SolomonLCVP IGCDP applicant

6.Which 3 main trends do you see shaping Ethiopia in the next two years and what opportunities and threats they present for AIESEC Ethiopia and AIESEC EIABC?

First is sms trends for fund raising an promotion, health and hygiene awareness and illegal markets. The sms trend for fund raising has been a very well known and its has an opportunity for us to reach more people. Health and hygiene awareness is a very discussed topic on television now a days it has an oppor-tunity to do projects on the matter. Also the illegal markets have an opportunity for projects like yes eiabc and other entrepreneurship related programs. it also is a threat, the image it creates of our city is not a good one especially for the interns who come here.

7.Looking at the past history of AIESEC in EIABC, Pick 3 things that went well and went wrong (Start-Stop-Continue)

8.What does AIESEC give to the Ethiopia? And what should AIESEC give to the Ethiopia?

AIESEC is promoting Ethiopia to the youth of the entire world through exchange. it id also help-ing the government and the people on issues that are impacting the society in a negative way. its also provides Ethiopia with the next generation of great leaders. making the youth explore their leadership potentials. AIESEC is giving lot to Ethiopia yet there are issues that haven’t been in focus by AIESEC in Ethio-pia like the issues in the rural regions of Ethiopia. And other cities outside of addis ababa. There has to be done something for the new issues of our society.

Strengths(wells)

-The first i would say is the exchange numbers and the team.-The OGX promotion.-EB election.

weakness(wrongs)

-weak recruitment-lack of trainings.-lack of team building experience and events.

ROLE SPECIFIC(LCVP IGCDP)

1.What does I’GCDP mean to you? Why do we do I’GCDP?

The incoming Global Community Development Program (IGCDP) is an AIESEC program whichbrings interns and offers voluntary internships for the short term and involve working on diverse proj-ects and in different organizations. Projects in focus on issues like literacy , health awareness , community development ,social connections and more.. We do exchange to promote cultural integration as well as bring into life the best international experience in the life of an exchange participant. And the process the people of host entities country get international awareness and a global mindset.

2.How do you assess the current value of the AIESEC Experience we offer to our stakeholders in AIESEC in EIABC? (please, indicate the main ones). Propose a strategy for the improvement of the same?

The experience we give to our stake holders are good. But not up to standards of our goals. We have to provide all of our tn takers with what we promised them. For example the experience we are offering to eiabc can be a good example well accomplished experience. And also MHO. But for the others we haven’t given them what we promised for long its a very bad satin on our brand. we have to divide our resources evenly to all our stakeholders. as an example MHO can be taken, 6 interns working at one tn taker while the other tn takers haven’t been provided with any. so we need to divide all the resource we have equally to the stakeholders.

3.What are the bottle necks and opportunities that you have observed regarding IGCDP? What initiatives do you want take up in the term 14/15 in order to capitalize on the opportunities available and alleviate the current bottlenecks?

The main opportunities i see are health awareness issues of our society and entrepreneurial issues. These two have great potential now for our society. if we go through with them theres no doubt we could achieve more and also be successful with it. and also the need of schools for international acquaintance is increasing so projects like edu power have great potential. The main bottlenecks we faced this year are d-motivation of members, not knowing how to face the challenges they we face due to lack of adequate trainings and lack of synergy with the other portfolios.

Page 13: Ethiopia aiesec eiabc lcvp 15 16 lcvp igcdp sofonias solomon

Sofonias SolomonLCVP IGCDP applicant

The main initiative i plan to take starts we building the team spirit in my team. Because the most important thing one needs is to know the people he/she works with and to get on a same page. the next is provide my team with general training form each portfolio so they could understand what they do and know how to communicate and synergize with them. The other main focus of mine would be to teach all my members why we are doing what we’re doing ,because if they have the clarity of why they wont be lost .

4.What is your vision for I’GCDP term 15/16 and How many realization goals do you plan to achieve?

My vision for 15/16 is • to get the highest exchange number in our LC’s history want to achieve more than i planned tis year.• Developing members to know more about AIESEC• Make new partnerships with other LCs and companies.60 realizations is the number of realizations i want to achieve this year. By doing three projects.

5.What are your initiatives in order to make iGCDP a financially sustainable portfolio? Include a GCP and a detailed description of one of your initiatives. Give any suggestions or strategies that enable I’GCDP to be self-sustainable. (Financially)

i want to make it financially sustainable by bringing more interns. But first i have to take care of our big-gest challenge accommodation. The first idea i want to take is to approach government officials who are responsible for housing projects and rents. i will get the low price government housing as accommodation and pay for it by the fundraising events that we are preparing this year to continue to next year. The sec-ond is CSR approach, the companies in Ethiopia are now following this new policy which enforces them to invest and or work on projects that have positive impact for the society. So i plan to do a research on many companies and get more partnerships that could help us be financially sustainable.

6.What effective synergies do you see as the possibilities to grow I’GCDP ?

the synergy with all portfolios is needed to get to the very position that we envision. For exampleBD & iGIP -for the successful executions of partnership with companiesFinance & Legality - for the handling of the money and trainings MAC - for the promotional materials and awarenessTM - for the trainings and the rest of the team building experiences

Page 14: Ethiopia aiesec eiabc lcvp 15 16 lcvp igcdp sofonias solomon

Sofonias SolomonLCVP IGCDP applicant

But the most essential ones now are with TM and BD because in order to get the one most crucial problem i.e. accommodation we need to get our members to work together and find stakeholders to get partnerships and deals. So with cooperation between the two we could solve or crucial problem.

7.How can you ensure the best experience for the EPs? How would you strategize in terms of Customer Experience Management [CEM]?

I want to be able to give the best experiences for my customers or EPs.i intend to do that by giving member trainings and assigning a EP buddy to help them in any circumstance can ensure the quality by dividing all the work into the human resource we have in our team. The best customer experience mean the more branding in of our lc to the outside world so this is an important factor to achieve sustainable and continuous projects. Word of mouth can be our next weap-on to get the next EPs so we gotta focus on it so that it could help us achieve more exchange numbers.

8.Please create a project proposal to ensure pipeline of 100 TN realizations in one year in your Local Committee. Underline how it could be financially sustainable, what would be its direct and indirect im-pact, Leadership and team member experience realized through it and timeline of realization?

EDUPOWER project is concerned about developing the social and mental skills of students. The inter-national interns will work with schools, NGOs and Children Village to teach English and basic computer. The intern is also required to help them engage in extracurricular activities such as story-telling, games, events preparation, designing programs to stimulate their talents, coaching children’s with special needs, and sharing their culture.

goal to bring in 100 interns. first the number of tn taker has to be increased to at least 5 to accommodate all this interns because i want to realize this by bringing 80% at the fruit pick and 20% at the fish pick. first in order to be financially sustainable we have the money that the interns pay and also the tn takers fee .to make a continuous accommodation and other expenses of the members.Structure it would need four project managers and at least 4 members in each team. Each team is going to be as-signed to a specific tn taker and get all the responsibility of the handling the tn taker and the interns there,15-20 interns per tn taker.one Product and Quality Manager Understand, control and evaluate the implement of iGCDP project of the national and local team, i.e. tracking of the Product life cycle and analyze market share of the projects implemented by the LC.the direct impact this project has is on the members the personal development, communication skills global mindset and awareness of their surrounding. on the interns to communicate with foreigners and develop their educational .the indirect impact would be on the children to guide them on what they want to archive in the future.

Page 16: Ethiopia aiesec eiabc lcvp 15 16 lcvp igcdp sofonias solomon

This project was first conceived by my fellow colleagues in IGCDP team. it has a wide range of application. This a new project idea which focus of talent And entrepreneurship. Even though most university students graduate on study-ing a certain field, many has chosen different paths than what they have studied. its because that all this talented young people don’t have the exposure and the know how of the current situation in Ethiopia. All this wide range of people in our country has been hidden or already follow a certain path that was chosen by the society or the schools. This project mainly focuses on exposing the talent of the youth by guiding them to follow their dreams and as a result get their entre-preneurial outlook widened. i want it to be the next new project that will be running in all LCs of Ethi-opia or maybe even at the MC level. As a part of generation 2016 i want to work on that project and develop it. I believe we can have different versions of the proj-ect starting from art school to chronology and business too.

If I Have a Possible Shortcoming in Teamwork, It Could Be That:

I am not at ease unless meetings are well structured and controlled and generally well conducted. 1

My objective outlook makes it difficult for me to join in readily and enthusiastically with colleagues. 0

I find it difficult to lead from the front, perhaps because I am over-responsive to group atmosphere. 0

I am apt to get too caught up in ideas that occur to me and so lose track of what is happening. 1 0 0

My colleagues tend to see me as worrying unnecessarily over detail and the possibility that things may go wrong. 3 0

I am sometimes seen as forceful and authoritarian if there is a need to get something done. 0

I am inclined to be generous towards others who have a valid viewpoint that has not been given a proper airing. 3 0
