1st Gasoline
• 1859-Edwin Drake drilled first oil
• Distilled the oil to produce kerosene for lamp fuel.
• Threw away the gasoline
• 1897-1st U.S. automobile

What is Ethanol?
1. Also called ethyl alcohol
2. Fermented sugars or starches.
3. Denatured – small amount of gasoline is added – poisonous
4. E10 = 10% ethanol, 90% gasoline
E85 = 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline
5. Produces +38% energy

Ethanol Uses
1. 7000BC – Chinese used it as drinking alcohol
2. 1840 – Lamp oil
3. 1908 – Model T
4. Henry Ford ran his cars on E10 and said “Ethanol is the fuel of the future”.

Ethanol to the Rescue!
• early 1900’s Europe’s oil supplies were small
• WWII
• 1970’s - OPEC
![Page 6: Ethanol – Day 5 By John Donley @ Snowcrest Jr. High](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022062517/56649edf5503460f94bef4c9/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Need for Ethanol
• Global Warming, smog, and inversions.
• New E.P.A. requirements
• E10 has up to 25% less emissions
• E85 has up to 40% less emissions
• When fuel prices rise high enough or pollution is great enough, society has always turned to ethanol for help.
• Why not just use it all the time?

Here is a website for a pretty good video if your district does not have it blocked as well as a place to download lesson plans.

Ethanol Today
• Where can we get it?• 2007 MN and OR require all
gasoline to have at least 10% ethanol.
• 8 other states are in process of requiring ethanol in all gasoline.
• Utah-adds 10% ethanol to reduce the emission levels and raise the octane level of the fuel.
• Brazil started switching over to E85 in 1973 and now does not have to import any oil for transportation.
• The use of ethanol has recently expanded to the various blends from E20, E40, and E85
