Fourthmeal 2 aims to revitalize the downtown by creating a social and living space within the city. The market was the central hub of commerce and socialization within the city. The market is outdated, but desirable. Through exploring market typologies, a new contemporary version is envisioned to act as a social hub in the center of the city. Opening at 4pm and staying open until late in the night, a center for late night food and socialization is created. With the growth of any successful city the nightlife evolves with the city to create a new time oriented fabric.

The Artist Live/Work Space is a textile lab meant to explore digital crafting within the art of textiles. Included is a public gallery and a large green ramp that doubles as a ski slope in the winter. The ramp structure consists of carbon fiber tubes grouped in three clusters that spread out to support the green space like tree roots turned upside down. The ramp creates additional greenspace as well as a different perspective of the city the public isn’t used to.

Spring 2014

Page 12: Ethan Rothermel Academic Portfolio

9 Based off of the follies in Bernard Tschumi’s Parc de la Villette, these follies are introduced into Florence in Piazza Annagoni along with the rest of the city. A cluster of the follies located in the piazza makes up a gastronomy center, while pieces that reach into the city are places of socialization and culture. The follies are laid out on a grid that also runs throughout the city. Intersections are marked by red LEDs on the ground that signify pathfinding and display a new central east west axis through the city to make the city more connected via pedestrian movement.

This adaptive reuse project aims to enhance and develop the nightlife in downtown Sandusky while providing a cultural and social exchange. The Night Market would be a place to grab late night food with some drinks after work or during a long night out on the town. With over 15 different food vendors and an outdoor overlook bar the market is a must visit destination during the evening. With the addition of an indoor and outdoor gallery space social and cultural functions may be held. The market also provides 9 Apartments on the top two floors that provide living spaces for the much sought-after downtown lifestyle. Emerging from the rise in social media, on the wall facing the Mylander Plaza, a live updating twitter feed of the city and market is featured. This is meant to connect the city with the residents and show which places downtown are trending.

The pixelization of the facade through hexagons blurs, yet hints at what is behind. through forced perspective the pixelization is removed and reveals the graphic beneath. The graphics are discovered along the two main traffic ways, meant to educate and intrigue the passerby about the blackstone launchpad. This installation was part of a contest to re-skin the Blackstone Launchpad in the student center. Our winning project was built after the semester ended. My role in the project was idea development, all the grasshopper work, design, fabrication, and installation as well as creating all the drawings.
