On behalf of ETF Stream, I am delighted to welcome you all to our ETFs Down Under event, which for 2020 will be fully online!

The coronavirus pandemic has reaped chaos on the economy and share market. It has thrown the old rules of investing out the window and forced a hard rethink of how Australians put their money to work. What were once portfolio staples – bank shares, property, government bonds – now provide little to no returns. Dividends themselves appear to be on life support. While many companies with skyrocketing shares – Tesla, Zoom, Snowflake – are based overseas. So what’s an investor to do?

In this first-of-a-kind virtual event we look at some of the options available to investors in this market. In particular, we pull the curtain back on ETFs – the fastest growing financial instruments in Australia, which have been used by thousands of Aussies to help rebuild their portfolios in the wake of the crisis.

With help from Magellan, we get into the weeds of the technology sector, examining what the opportunities are and whether the sector is overvalued or worse – in a bubble. We tap the expertise of Bill Evans, chief economist at Westpac, for a future look at interest rates and what it means – if anything – for gold. We then look at how ETFs are being used to bring dividends back to life in this challenging era. And last but not least we take a look at ethical investing – and how and why many investors are adding environmental and social considerations to their portfolios following the bushfires.

Joining Zenith in 2009, Dugald is the Head of Real Assets & Listed Strategies and focuses on driving Zenith’s research across public and private real assets as well as Exchange Traded Funds and Listed Investment Companies across all markets. Dugald’s involvement in responsible investing dates back to 2001, encompassing SRI ratings design, environmental modelling in production systems and governance issues in listed investment entities.

Andrew has worked for over two decades in financial services and related industries and has spent a significant portion of his career in the UK and the US, where his roles varied from derivatives product controller, strategy consultant, as well as equity derivatives trader. Currently, he is General Manager of the Investment Products team at ASX, which covers ETFs, LICs, mFunds, REITs, warrants, hybrids, and bonds.

Mark is Managing Director and Global Head of Equity Factor Products where he leads the commercial strategy for MSCI equity factor indexes, factor models and MSCI FaCSTM. Bill Evans is Westpac’s economic spokesman and is responsible for all of our economic research. In 1991, Bill joined Westpac as the Chief Economist and Head of Research. A graduate of Sydney University (BEc. Hons I and University Medal) and the London School of Economics (M. Sc.), Bill has worked as Research Manager for the Reserve Bank of Australia and as a Treasurer at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Graham understands what it takes to build a company from scratch and achieve extraordinary growth. He revolutionised commodities trading over three decades ago, transforming a natural aptitude for numbers and love of macroeconomics into highly innovative, international financing structures that delivered results.

Peter joined Lonsec in 2008 and is the General Manager Equities. In this role, Peter is responsible for managing research across a range of sectors. Prior to joining the managed funds team in mid-2012, Peter worked as a Senior Investment Analyst for both Lonsec’s equities research and direct property teams.

Nathan Lim is the Head of Wealth Management Research for Morgan Stanley Australia.
