TRANSCRIPT
The Aramaic name for it is “Parsumey nissa.” The time for it is early evening, when people are on their way home from work. And the action involved is striking a match, lighting some candles in a candelabrum and placing it in our front window. Facing the street. Why? Because it’s Cha-nukah. Because a miracle happened in Israel in the year 165 BCE, and we celebrate its anniversary. How? By advertising the miracle – “parsumey nissa.”
Before we do all this, of course, we say a blessing, giving thanks for the miracle that happened for our ancestors, in those days, at this time. This action – exhibiting our lit menorah for all passersby to see – is how we advertise the miracle of the Maccabees, when as our prayers tell us “God, in Your great mercy You fought their battle…and the strong lost to the weak, the many to the few, the impure to the pure, the wicked to the righteous, and the arrogant lost to those who devoted themselves to Your Torah.” So this act of advertising is truly a sacred duty. Let’s re-member the purpose of the menorah this year: Parsumey nissa.
What we should also remember, of course, is the fact that we do not glo-rify the personalities of the Maccabees, but we celebrate the victory they achieved by their inspiration, their determination to resist oppression and attacks on their faith – our faith. Their story took place only 2,180 years ago, and things like government and politics were rather different then. Or were they? Believe it or not, they had such a thing as corruption then too. After driving the Greek invaders from the Temple, Judah Mac-cabee and his brothers proceeded to take over ruling the country. As glorious as they were in battle, they were inglorious as rulers. So we still celebrate their victory, but not their per-sonalities. It’s “Parsumey nissa” – “publicize the miracle”. Not “publicize the Maccabees.”
In our day as we approach the 22th centu-ry since the Chanukah miracle, we can cou-ple our sacred advertising with a prayer for a new miracle. The very name of our holiday, remember, is Chanukah – literally Dedication. With Divine inspiration, our ancestors were able to reclaim the Temple and dedicate it, with that little bottle of oil

President’s Message by Deborah Sternberg
It’s hard to believe that Hanukkah is upon us already. This is one of my favorite times of the year. It is a time for family and being together. As we light the menorah each night and remember the re-dedication of the Holy Temple, we can reflect on the past year and recall how much we have to be thankful for in our own synagogue. We have come together over the past 12 months and have re-built and enhanced our beautiful congregation.
As we approach the festival of lights, I have eight wishes for all of us: Continued membership growth Financial strength for our congregation Energized religious school Vibrant music in our services and religious school Strong overall participation Sustained strong spiritual leadership Peace in Israel And, above all, health and happiness for our extended community
Wishing you all a wonderful 2016!
Volume 74, Issue 4 Page 2
the only one that the Maccabees found still sealed with the High Priest’s seal – just enough to burn for one day. And we recall the miracle that it burned for 8 days. That, says the Talmud, is the true miracle of Chanukah.
We can also recall the experience of 1967 – not 22 centuries ago, just 48 years ago – when an Israeli general liberated the Old City and radioed headquarters with the historic message – “the Temple Mount is in our hands!” And they would not let him take it. Today Jews are not permitted to pray on the Temple Mount. Today enemies that make the ancient Greeks look noble attack Jews at prayer and at bus stops. We see lives destroyed and nothing gained. No miracle to advertise. At least, not yet.
So, until we get a new miracle, the best we can do is celebrate the old one. We can do so with songs and with latkes, with joy and with hope. We can enjoy advertising the miracle of Chanukah once again.

l The 7th annual Turkey Train provided us with another hands-on mitzvah project and oppor-
tunity to come together as a community to repair the world, tikkun olam. Bill Hounshell, of
Matherne’s Market on Kenilworth, not only provided his customary free delivery this year, but
he also added 13 additional 12-14 lb. turkeys for no added cost. The Lipsey Family also
brought in a generous 25 turkeys again this year. With so many contributions, both in pre-
order and with personal delivery, we were able to provide St. Vincent de Paul with a total of
109 turkeys for the long Thanksgiving weekend this year!
President and CEO of St. Vincent de Paul, Michael Acaldo, said, “Every year, Baton Rouge is
so blessed to have B'nai Israel's community leadership during Thanksgiving. We are so thank-
ful for you and your congregation. The congregation's generosity ensures that poor, homeless
and the most vulnerable don't have to go hungry on Thanksgiving Day. Thank you!” In addi-
tion to all who helped pass turkeys on the train, we wish to say “Todah Rabbah”, thank you, to
the following people and an anonymous donor for contributing so generously to this mitzvah:
With Thanksgiving behind us now, we look ahead towards Chanukah. We have many exciting
things planned in Religious School this month. Jacobs Camp will be celebrating Chanukah
with us, helping to make marshmallow dreidels, leading Gaga, and judging the Iron Chef Lat-
ke competition this year. We will have our annual Chanukah Menorah contest, dreidel compe-
titions, an M&M’s “Mini Maccabee” event with Rabbi Jordan, a fried chicken and latke lunch,
and a Chanukah candle-lighting led by our Confirmation students. For our Chanukah celebra-
tion on Sunday, December 13, we are asking every child to bring a wrapped gift appropriate for
their age and not to exceed $10 for our gift exchange game.

book suggestions, historical facts, dreidel rules, and recipes. Wishing everyone a bright and

Hey everyone! My name is Eliana Levy and I am the 2015-2016 BaRFTY Communications Vice President (CVP).
This year BaRFTY is hosting NFTY Southern’s Spring Conclave. There is lots of planning and preparations going
into this event to make it the most fun and successful event yet.
NFTY So stands for National Federation of Temple Youth Southern region. There are four events total in a year
where Jewish teens from all over the south register for a weekend of fun and learning surrounded by other Jewish
teens. Out of the four events, two of them are hosted in certain cities by that city’s TYG, or Temple Youth Group.
This year Baton Rouge has been selected to host Spring Conclave from April 8-10, 2016.
As I mentioned before, there is lots of planning going into this event and the preparations start now! BaRFTY has
been brainstorming and planning some fundraising ideas to help raise the money to pay for food, transportation,
and merchandise. The details of upcoming fundraisers will come soon! If you have a child in BaRFTY, we would
love for you to encourage them to participate in not just this event, but all NFTY Southern events! They are so
much fun and a great way to make lifelong friends. There are also committee sign ups happening now as well.
There are six different committees each headed by a BaRFTY board member under the leadership of our Conclave
Co-Chairs; Aaron Posner and Nina Jalenak. The committees and their descriptions are as follows:
Social- headed by Max Sager and Eliana Levy. This committee is responsible for promoting and en-
couraging NFTY’s goals and values.
Communications & Engagement-headed by Max Sager and Eliana Levy. This committee will get the
word about conclave out to the community! They will also help in communicating with other commit-
tees and helping the event come together in general.
Religious- headed by Ari Hoffman. This group will create religious and cultural activities and assist in
t’filot events.
Programming- headed by Benny Meltzer. This committee will prepare innovative programs for our
youth including finding the perfect place for each program.
Logistics- headed by Nina Jalenak. This committee will make sure that all food, transportation, and
decorations are taken care of.
Mitzvah Project- headed by Rachel Posner. This committee is responsible for the social actions pro-
ject the NFTY Southern members will be participating in throughout the weekend of Spring Conclave.
The committees will have separate meetings to work on their branch of conclave as the head of the committee de-
cides. There is extra HOUSING COMMITTEE headed by Maia Jalenak and Linda Posner. Participants from
out of town usually stay at their friend’s house for the weekend, but if you have room available at your home and
you don’t mind housing a handful of kids for a weekend that would be great! Housing entails welcoming teens into
your home, feeding them, giving them a room or two to sleep in, and driving them to and from the synagogues for
programming.
We hope that you will sign up for a committee and help us out! If there are any questions please feel free to contact
me or one of our BaRFTY advisors, Ellen Sager, or Julie Hoffman at the numbers below. If you are unable to sign
up for a committee, please consider making a donation to help us make this an amazing event successful for all of
our friends and to help us show everyone how great our Jewish Community is! Thanks so much for all your sup-
port!
Sincerely,
Eliana Levy, CVP
