Changing the culture of the East Texas Baptist Univer-sity football team Joshua Eargle is entering his sec-ond year as the head coach. Eargle set a new stan-dard in 2013 that is paving the way for a bright future.

Last year, Eargle’s team broke numerous team and indi-vidual records along with putting Jamaine Sherman in the NFL. ETBU also started out 2-0 which was the first time any team had started the season with two straight wins.

Eargle also produced ETBU’s first-ever undrafted free agent in Jamaine Sherman. As soon as the NFL Draft was done, Sherman signed a contract with the St. Louis Rams.

Starting in January 2013, Eargle brings NCAA Division I and II coaching experience to the program. Eargle’s roots are original-ly from East Texas as he has made coaching stops in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma before coming back home.

“I am very pleased to have Joshua Eargle as the new Head Football Coach at East Texas Baptist University,” stated Di-rector of Athletics Kent Reeves. “Coach Eargle is a solid Christian man who will motivate our young men to be great both on the field and off. We are excited to have Joshua and his family coming to join the ETBU family.”

Eargle is very familiar with East Texas and recruited this area for Nicholls State, the University of Arkansas-Monticello, and Ouachita Baptist University. He has also coached in the area as the defensive coordinator for Hallsville High School in 2011 when they were Bi-District finalists. Coming from Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he was a Texas Sports Writers 4A All-State line-man, he played for his uncle, Chuck King, before moving on to the University of Memphis where he was a three-year letterman.

Coaching both sides of the ball, Eargle has been an offen-sive and defensive coordinator in his young career. In 2012, he was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State (NCAA DII) and served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas-Monticello (NCAA DII) in 2010.

“With Coach Eargle’s experience as a recruiting coordinator, of-fensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator, he will bring a good working knowledge of the game to our program,” stated Reeves.

Post season games have also graced Eargle at the NCAA Division I level along with conference championships. He has coached in four bowl games, winning two as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi in the 2007 GMAC Bowl and the 2004 New Orleans Bowl. He took part in the 2010 Capital One Bowl on the staff at Louisiana State University and the 2003 Liberty Bowl at Southern Mississippi.

In his first year as a graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi, he was a part of the 2003 Conference USA Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. In his second stint at Southern Mississippi, they won the Conference USA-East Championship in 2006 at 6-2.

He has made coaching stops at the NCAA Division I BCS (Bowl Championship Series) level at Southern Mississippi (’03, ’04, ’06) and Louisiana State University (’09). In 2007 and 2008, he coached at the NCAA Division I FCS (Foot-ball Championship Series) level at Nicholls State. Making stops at NCAA Division II programs, he has also coached at Southeastern Oklahoma State (’12), the University of Arkan-sas-Monticello (’10), and Ouachita Baptist University (’05).

Under his guidance, he has had 10 players earn first-team all-conference and 17 players earn an all-conference award. At every program he has coached for, at least one player has earned a first-team all-conference award.

At Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2012 as the defensive coordinator, his pass defense was the 11th best in NCAA Di-vision II and first in the Great American Conference. The overall defense finished 29th in the nation out of 156 pro-grams and was third in the Great Amercian Conference.

The 2001 graduate of the University of Memphis was an offensive guard that earned the Top Tiger Award which was presented by head coach Tommy West. He finished with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He then earned a Master’s Degree in sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004. He is married to Kristen and they have two daughters

“This is a great hire for East Texas Baptist. Josh was a tremendous addition to our staff

when he joined us for the 2009 season. He will bring great enthusiasm and passion

along with a tremendous work ethic and outstanding football knowledge to East

Texas Baptist. It’s very gratifying to see guys who work hard and do things the right way

get rewarded for their efforts. I’m very happy for Josh and his family. He will do a great

job there.”

Les Miles, head coachLouisiana State University

LAST WEEKHSU 35, ETBU 19ABILENE, Texas – Starting from behind after the first quarter, East Texas Baptist University couldn’t catch Hardin-Simmons University in an American Southwest Conference game, 35-19. Both Stephen Alfred and Tyler Bates broke more ETBU records on the day and the defense had two sacks and seven tackles-for-loss.

“Today we didn’t give ourselves a chance for victory,” says head coach Joshua Eargle. “We played with no discipline and no passion and that’s 100% my fault.”

Tyler Bates led the team with 172 yards receiving on 12 receptions and one touchdown which puts him at 998 yards receiving. The receiving touchdown was his 21st in his career which is a new program record for receiving touchdowns. Alfred finished the day with 126 yards re-ceiving as he broke the single season record for receiving yards with 1,132 surpassing Jamine Sherman’s record from last year. He also caught two touchdowns breaking Bates receiving touchdowns record with 11 touchdowns. Josh Warbington continued to be one of the top NCAA Division III quarterbacks throwing for 406 yards and three touchdowns. He was 37-of-56 with no interceptions and now has 3, 290 yards passing on the year.

In the game, ETBU gave up 21 points to Hardin-Simmons on either special teams, turnovers, and not converting a fourth down. Hardin-Simmons took the opening kickoff and drove down 82 yards for their first score. ETBU went three-and-out and then held Hardin-Simmons on their next possession. Starting at their own 29-yard line, ETBU only completed three plays when they fumbled the ball at eh 21-yard line. Two plays later Hardin-Simmons had a 14-0 lead. That is what the halfime score was as ETBU was held to just over 100 yards of total offense in that half.

The second half brought more offensive power for ETBU but not enough to get by Hardin-Simmons. ETBU took the opening possession of the third quarter and drove down to the Hardin-Simmons five-yard line where they attempted a field goal. The Cowboys blocked the at-tempt and returned it 81 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0.

ETBU didn’t get on the board until the end of the third quarter when Warbington hit Alford for their first touchdown from 19-yards out mak-ing it 21-7. Adding in some trickery, ETBU took an onside kick and re-covered it. They got to the Hardin-Simmons 41-yard line and then went for it on fourth-and-nine and turned the ball over. In a drawn out drive, Hardin-Simmons took six minutes off the clock going 60-yards for their fourth touchdown of the day, 28-7. Once again, ETBU answered with a 10-play, 74-yard drive as Alfred caught his second touchdown pass of the day from 16-yards out. The extra point was blocked and ETBU trailed, 28-13.

Holding Hardin-Simmons to a three-and-out on their next possession, ETBU took over the ball at the their own 38-yard line. Two plays into the drive, Warbington hit Bates for a 54-yard touchdown strike pulling within nine, 28-19, as the two-point conversion failed. Another onsides kick attempt failed as ETBU was assessed an illegal touching penalty which put Hardin-Simmons at their on 43-yard line. Two rushing plays later they had a 35-19 lead which is where the game ended. ETBU re-corded 564 of total offense (406 passing, 158 rushing) and only gave up one sack on the day. ETBU’s defense recorded two sacks by Desmond Oliver and Dylan Bowman led the team with a career-high 12 tackles.

28 ETBU ECal/BROWSER THEMEMARSHALL, Texas – Making it easier for the fan to follow East Texas Baptist University athletics, the ETBU athletic department has added ECal and a browser theme to their options on their website. You can now download schedules into any device or computer to remind you of the ETBU sporting events and also have an ETBU browser them on your com-puter.

“As part of our branding effort for ETBU athletics, we wanted to have a way for fans to always know what is going on for the ETBU schedule,” says direc-tor of sports information Adam P. Ledyard. “ECal lets us brand our ETBU logo along with having links in the calendar back to our website, social media out-lets, gameday links, and a look at our facilities. The browser also lets you show off ETBU athletics from you desktop computer.”

To download ECal, go to the ETBU Fan Zone drop down menu and click ETBU ECal and follow the instructions. You can download one specific sport or all of them. This is the first step in branding ETBU athletics in the community, on the web, and for the fans.

Kent ReevesDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSB.S.E. - John Brown UniversityM.S.E. - Arkansas State UniversityPhone: 903-923-2226E-Mail: [email protected]

Now in his 18th year as Director of Athlet-ics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks.

Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in women’s basketball at ETBU, stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually.

Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 14 in 2014, with the addition of men’s and women’s tennis and track & field.

ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with 11 conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 51 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship in 2010.

Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football, soccer, and tennis. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years.

Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances.

As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culmi-nated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a then program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons finishing with 183 wins over six seasons.

Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, who is a recent graduate of Baylor University and was married this past summer.

It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to East Texas Baptist University! This is an excellent University for students who are interested in the best in learning, living, and faith. One of the advantages of the American system of higher education is the great diversity of institutions, and ETBU is one of only a few remaining distinctly Christian universities.

At ETBU, we believe that all truth is God’s truth so we study and learn from a Christian worldview. Most colleges and universities in our nation today separate faith and learning. We integrate them. And, while we accept students of all faiths and no faith, we are unapologeti-cally committed to fulfilling God’s call for us as an institution under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you or someone you know would flourish in a university setting characterized by close community, meaningful interaction, excellent teaching, robust student life, and a desire not just to earn a degree but to also fulfill God’s purpose for his or her life, explore our website and then come to campus and experience for yourself why we are so excited about East Texas Baptist University.

Go Tigers!

Dr. Lawrence Ressler, Interim President
