Pi Kappa Phi ~ Eta Beta

Terre Haute ramp build a great success for chapter On Saturday December 5 of

this year, 15 men of Eta Beta, despite

below freezing temperatures and an

early wake up

call as we pull

into study week,

went to con-

struct an acces-

sible ramp for a

local man in

need.

W i t h

materials being

provided by The

Will Center of

Terre Haute, the

Brothers at-

tacked the pro-

ject with enthu-

siasm and will-

ing spirits to

help a local man

become more

mobile around

his own house.

With an

early morning

arrival at 10:30

and a tempera-

ture of 25 degrees, Brothers surveyed

the area and split into teams to begin

the foundation and deck frame. With

assistance from members of the Will

Center, the project gradually took

shape once the frame was set to its

foundation and the deck topping

completed. While the majority of the

Brothers have little experience in

construction, with help from a few

select Brothers with some building

experience from work or other pro-

jects, we were able to listen to direc-

tion from them and make the proper

decisions.

Without stopping for a break

and continued work as temperatures

peaked at 37 degrees, Brothers con-

tinued to work together and install

the railings and ramp onto the deck.

When 4:30 in the afternoon rolled

around, the Brothers were able to

pose on the newly constructed ramp

and deck. The Brothers as a whole

enjoyed the second ramp build pro-

ject. We will continue to work with

the Will Center

of Terre Haute to

assist them with

their efforts to

ma k e T er r e

Haute more ac-

cessible for lo-

cals.

Associate

Evan Shortridge

had the follow-

ing to say about

his first ramp

build project,

“S e e in g

how much build-

ing the ramp can

make such a dif-

ference showed

me how much

we really take

for granted every

day. Being able

to play a sport,

go for a jog, or

even walking

down a set of stairs without ease,

made me think how much it would

help just to have a ramp to leave my

own house. Not only that it was just a

fun time to hang out with the broth-

ers. it was a good bonding activity

and I'm sure we all had a blast help-

ing someone who is less fortunate,

and all we did was put some pieces of

wood together.”

The annual home-

coming week was another

great round of events for

Eta Beta to compete on

campus for the title of

champion. This year the

chapter was

paired with

the fine ladies

of Gamma

Phi Beta who

worked to-

gether with

the Brothers

in all events.

T h e

t r a d i t i o n a l

Indiana State

homecoming

was done

slightly dif-

ferent this

year than it

has been in

past years.

The new

President ,

Daniel Brad-

ley, had re-

q u e s t e d

homecoming involve more

students on the campus.

The effects on the Greek

life were marginal, but

change to a long time tradi-

tion on campus was noticed

with some opposition.

Homecoming com-

petition this year was open

to both Greek and non-

Greek competition, Eta

Beta was going up against

other organizations like the

United States Air Force

Reserve Officer Training

Corps and Residential Life

Association.

The change in-

creased competition on the

traditional Trike race

among other competitions

on campus. Eta Beta, as

well as other Greeks, met

the challenge and were able

come in fourth overall.

Chapter response to

this year’s homecoming,

along with changes to pro-

cedure, were positive.

Br o t her Jus t in

Steele had the following to

say,

“When it comes to

the Trike race I was disap-

pointed to finish where we

did but proud of the work

we put into it. The racers

we had kept practice inter-

esting and pushed each

other to better, with both

positive and (jokingly)

negative reinforcement.

When it comes to Home-

coming over all I was

greatly surprised on how

well we did. 4th in float is

a great feat on its own. The

Gamma Phi Beta's were a

great pairing and really

helped out when we needed

them.”

We are also ex-

tremely grateful for the

work of Alumni Initiate

Brad Ulery, who built a

new Trike for the chapter

that meets all standards, is

more ergonomic, and

lighter than the trike pur-

chased last year. Brother

Matthew Ulery also com-

mented on how he felt

Homecoming this year,

“The team really

came together this year and

worked hard during prac-

tice and out of practice. As

usual we always feel like

we are doing much better

than the year

before and

always seem

to come up

just a little

short of ex-

pectations.”

“Homecoming

went awesome

this year! We

had one of the

best showings

that I remem-

ber. I was in

charge of the

Air Band per-

f o r m a n c e

which was

changed to

S y c a m o r e

Sync this year.

Our pairing

Gamma Phi

Beta, was very

excited about being with

us. We placed fourth over-

all, and were happy with

our performance. Our float

looked professionally built

this year and we had a blast

building it! We are looking

forward to spring week and

doing even better, going for

our first win!”, commented

Brother Doug Gehrke.

We continue to

work hard to work towards

a big win for Homecoming

next year. Thank you for

the alumni for your support

and see you next year!.

The Epsilon associ-

ate class of Eta Beta held a

successful Push America

event December 3

of this year in

preparation for their

initiation January 22

next year. A re-

quirement for every

initiate class of Eta

Beta, Epsilon Class’

Push America fund-

raising event was a

ment.

teams competing for

the champion tro-

phy, a women's

bracket played for

the final round

against the men's

bracket for the final

round. Of the 11

teams were an ac-

tive Pi Kappa Phi team and

an associate team. In the

end just over $600 was

raised. Other teams were

six members from Alpha

Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi,

Delta Gamma, Chi Omega

(Winning Team), Tau

Kappa Epsilon, Alpha

Kappa Psi, aviation majors,

and resident hall associa-

tion. The competition con-

tinued for three hours as

teams tried their best to

claim the trophy.

Brother Cody Parks

and Sierra Sweasy of Al-

pha Sigma Alpha, employ-

ees with Recreational

sports with Indiana State

volunteered their time to

help referee the games.

The active Brothers

had nothing but great feed-

back to say about

the event. Brother

Isaac Hart had the

following to say,

“Like every

Associate class we

have, Epsilon was

respons ible fo r

forming their own

Push America event.

The difference be-

tween the first

classes and Epsilon

is that Epsilon took

the bar above and

beyond what had

ever been done be-

fore, and set a new

goal for future

classes. The Volley-

ball tournament was

planned, organized,

and ran by Epsilon

class, with a help from a

few actives.”

We look forward to

the initiation of our newest

class January 22.

Letter from the Historian New Executive Council Dear Alumni:

I want to thank all the alumni for their support

through everything we’ve done this semester. A great

shout out to Adam English for providing essentially all of

the Homecoming supplies this year. As I leave the role of

Historian, I will continue to be the Alumni Relations

chairman. It has been a pleasure working will all of you

over the last year and I look forward to seeing you over

the Spring semester and hope we can reach the rest of our

alumni base. Happy Holidays for all and safe travels

wherever your journeys take you.

Brothers Alsup and Allen serve for Push America Building leaders of

tomorrow by serving peo-

ple with disabilities today.

This mission statement was

exemplified this past sum-

mer when Brother Travis

Alsup cycled the Journey

of Hope North route and

Brother Christo-

p he r Al le n

joined the Build

America team.

Their journeys

started June 9

and July 1 in

San Francisco,

California and

Cleveland, Ohio

r e s p e c t ive l y.

They would

eventually end

their extraordi-

nary summers in

Washington DC

on the Capitol

law August 15

in what would

be the conclu-

sion for an un-

forgettable sum-

mer.

T h e

Journey of Hope

would travel

along the north of the

United States and cover

over 3,800 miles. Build

America started in Cleve-

land and would weave

through the Midwest visit-

ing six camps and building

accessible structures for

camps.

Every Brother from

Eta Beta that has come

back from a Push America

event has come back a dif-

ferent man than when they

left. Brother Alsup’s rea-

son to do The Journey of

Hope was,

“The main reason I

decided to do the event

was because I saw how

much of an impact it had

our fellow brothers. They

seem to have come back

from each event a better

and more rounded person.”

B r o t her Al le n

shared the same sentiment,

“Brothers coming

back from summer events

had an awesome impact on

their lives. It was clear they

had returned from their

trips as a new person.”

Brother Alsup also

commented on what he

took from his experience,

“I learned that we

should be thankful for what

we have and what we can

do. We met a lot of people

over the summer that

couldn't do everyday tasks

without the assistance of

others. It really puts it in

perspective and trying to

explain the experiences

doesn't do justice com-

pared to the real thing.”

What both Brothers

learned, and what most Pi

Alphas learn, through their

events, is that is extremely

difficult to put the trips

into words.

“What I learned

from the trip was more

than construction, more

than how to conduct a

friendship visit well, and

more than working well

with others. What I learned

I cannot put into words, but

I’ve found out what Frater-

nity means.”

c o m m e n t e d

Brother Allen.

For indi-

viduals consid-

ering doing a

summer event,

the advice was

clear from both

Brother Alsup

a nd Al le n,

Brother

Alsup described

what he, and

others would

agree, means to

be a Pi Alpha,

“Pi Al-

pha means that

I was one of the

lucky members

of Pi Kappa Phi

that had a

chance to help

others for a

summer. It is also a group

of people that can share

their experiences with one

another because it's hard

for someone to grasp the

experiences from these

events that haven't done

one.”

We are proud of the

Brothers for representing

Eta Beta with excellence

with Push America and

dedicating their summer.

Eta Beta chapter held our Sec-

ond Annual No Boundaries Week

October 29 to November 3 which

brought campus wide

attention to Pi Kappa

Phi and Push America.

With a base plan of

how successful our last

No Boundaries Week

went last year, we

could only improve

upon it.

The scaffold sit

was the primary atten-

tion grabber for the

week, with two Broth-

ers on top of the scaf-

fold in the center of

campus all week.

Other fund rais-

ing activities included

Pie-a-Pi-Kapp in which

anyone could pie a

member for a minimum

donation of $1. We had

a 24 hour Bike-a-Thon

in which two Brothers

were always on a bicy-

cle mounted to a sta-

tionary trainer provided

by Alpha Tau Omega

and Pi Kappa Alpha for

our event.

One day was

also dedicated to a

round of Disability corn

hole in which volun-

teers could donate a

minimum donation of

$1 to participate in a

corn hole round with a

blind fold on or the use

of non dominate arm. At the conclu-

sion of the event we also held our

third annual Empathy Dinner where

participates were given a disability

and were encouraged to eat through

the first portion of their meal with it.

In attendance was the Chief Execu-

tive Officer of Push America, Chad

Coltrane, who gave a moving speech

on the importance of disability

awareness not just on college cam-

puses, but nation wide.

In attendance at the event

were also numerous parents of Broth-

ers who were in town for our second

annual Parents Day which was at a

local park earlier that day.

The Brotherhood

as a whole was impressed

with how the week went.

“No Boundaries

Week went quite well.

While we could always

raise more money, I think

that our main goal of rais-

ing awareness and pro-

moting the name of Push

America was accom-

plished. We had our spot

right in the middle of

campus and by the end of

the week we became a

fixture of campus life! No

boundaries week was also

a great way for the associ-

ate members to get in-

volved and also for the

actives to get to know

them as well. People on

campus were definitely

interested on what we

were doing. I think with

our presence on the scaf-

fold for 100+ hours we

really showed campus our

dedication and no doubt

proved what Pi Kappa Phi

is all about.”

By the end of the

week we had raised just

over $600 for Push Amer-

ica through donations on

campus. We continue to

plan for improved No

Boundaries Week next

year and will always be accepting

donations which can be put towards

Push America. We thank all parties

for their support in raising awareness

for people with disabilities.
