Cutting and interfacing instruction
Cut all pattern pieces from fabric, lightweight interfacing, and stabilizer on a single layer.
From the external and lining fabric and lightweight interfacing cut a rectangle 41.5 cm by 67
cm (16 3 8⁄ ” by 26 3 8⁄ ”) for the Small basket or 58 cm by 67 cm (22 7 8⁄ ” by 26 3 8⁄ ”) for the
Large basket.
From the heavyweight stabilizer cut a rectangle 39.5 cm by 65 cm (15 ½” by 25 ½”) for
Small basket and 56 cm by 65 cm (22” by 25 ½”) for the Large basket.
Lightweight interfacing can be fused to the wrong side of the external fabric first, followed
by the heavyweight stabilizer in the centre.
I recommend using a non-directional print or plain fabric, otherwise the pattern will end up
the wrong way round on one side of the basket. You need to cut the pieces in the middle
along the longer sides and add 1 cm (3 8⁄ ”) seam allowance if working with a directional print
fabric then sew it with right sides together.
TIP: When working with Faux leather, Cork or Vinyl fabric use double
sided tape, masking tape and clips instead of pins to avoid making
unwanted holes.
First test the machine settings on a scrap of fabric and use a Teflon or
walking foot while sewing.
1. Mark the centre on the longer sides.
2. Draw a small rectangle on the wrong
side of the fabric centred along the
longer sides 21 cm by 11.5 cm (8 ¼” by
4 ½”).
3. Cut the small rectangles out.
Sewing the basket
4. Fold in falf the external piece right side
facing each other. Align the side edges
and pin in place.
5. Stitch both sides using 1 cm (3 8⁄ ”) seam
allowance. Backstitch at the beginning
and the end.
6. Open the seam allowance and press it
flat.
7. Make a notch down the folded edge to
mark the centre.
8. Line up the raw edge of the piping tape
on the right side of the top Basket edge.
Pin it together.
9. Cross over the piping at one of the
seams leaving longer tail ends.
10. Using the zipper foot start sewing the piping exactly at the seam. Backstitch at the
beginning. Fold the piping tail at 45 degrees angle away from the edge.
11. Continue sewing around the edge, cross over the piping at the seam and again fold the
tail end away from the edge. Backstitch at the end. Trim off the tail ends.
12. With right sides together fold the Basket so that the centre notches and the seams are in
line. Align the bottom edges and pin it.
13. Sew the seams using 1 cm (3 8⁄ ”) seam
allowance. Backstitch at the beginning
and the end.
14. Repeat steps 1 – 4 for the lining piece.
15. Stitch one side of the lining at a slight
angle. Start at the top with 1 cm (3 8⁄ ”)
seam allowance and finish at the bottom
at 12 mm (½”). This will make the
lining to fit better inside the basket.
Backstitch at the beginning and the end.
16. Sew the other side in the same way but
leave at least 7 cm (3”) opening, which
will be used later to turn the Basket right
side out.
17. Open the seams and press it flat.
18. Repeat steps 12- 13 to sew the bottom
seams.
19. Turn the Basket’s lining right side out.
20. With right sides facing together insert
the lining into the Basket and match the
seams. Line up the top edges and pin
around the rim of the Basket.
21. Using a zipper foot sew the seam close
to the piping. Backstitch on both ends.
22. Using the opening in the lining turn the entire Basket right side out.
23. With wrong sides together push the
lining inside the Basket and line up the
top rim edge. You can press it flat or use
clips to hold in place.
24. Topstitch the top edge close to the
piping. Backstitch at the beginning and
the end.
25. Pinch the opening in the lining seam and
close it with clips.
26. Using a ladder stitch close the opening.
27. Punch a rivet hole centred 1.5 cm (5 8⁄ ”)
from both short sides.
28. Mark a rivet placement located 5 cm
(2”) down from the top edge and 8 cm
(3 ¼”) from the seam. Repeat on the
other side.
29. Punch holes and line up the handles.
Install rivets.
Optional: when using fabric without any
interfacing cut a small leather square or a
circle and insert it between the rivet and the
lining fabric for extra reinforcement.
