Abutment

The most common FPDS used for aesthetic purpose are :

All-ceramic bridgesMetal ceramic bridges

Effect of tooth preparation on the aesthetic of final restoration:

Special concern should be given to facial aspect

Sufficient amount of reduction should be made on the facial aspect

What will happen if you make insufficient reduction?

the laboratory technichen will have one of two choices:

1- To fabricate the restoration with proper contour but this will lead to improper shade of the final restorations due to insufficient thickness of different porcelain layers constituting the final restoration.

2- To develop over contoured restorations to produce the desired shade .but, this will result into a bulky restoration, which will affect the aesthetics of final restoration and induce plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation

2 areas are commonly under reduced during preparationIncisolabial aspect of the facial aspectCervical portion of the facial aspect

Preparation of the facial aspect of the tooth should be done in two planes following the normal anatomical tooth contours but not on one flat plane

One of the methods that can help in developing the facial aspect preparation on 2 planes is to use a depth cut grooves in 2 planes following the normal anatomical contour of the restoration

Finish line

Esthatically the shoulder finish line is better than deep chamfer as it allows more adequate assessment to the thickness of preparation both visually and with instruments.

From aesthetic point of view ,The finish line for metal ceramic restoration is better to be placed subgingivaly to avoid display of the metal margin of the restoration

Esthetic considerations in pontic

Pontic :artificial tooth in fixed dental prosthesis that replaces a missing natural tooth restoring its function and esthetics

Ideal requirements of ponticSmooth surface and convex all aroundEasy to cleanNo irritation on the gingival tissueFacilitate plaque controlStrength and longevityBe estheticRestore functionColour stable

Esthatic consideration of pontic design

Mesio distal width

Space discrepancy less in posteriors ttt by:1- orthodontic ttt

pontic of abnormal size

illusion of natural teeth

Inciso gingival length

root can be stained to stimulate exposed dentineuse pink porcelain to stimulate gingival tissues

cementDef: plastic paste of powder and liquid which hardens to a solid mass and used to retain restoring and occupying marginal voids

Esthatic requirement of cementtranslucency cement must be translucent and not opaqueTodays five models of dental cements

zinc phosphatezinc poly carboxylatezinc oxide and eugenol glass ionomer cement :-conventional resin_modified glass ionomercomposite : conventional adhesive

zinc phosphate cementthe set cement is opaque it is consider not esthetic

zinc Polycarboxylate cement It is not translucent as set cement is opaque because of large quantity of un reacted zinc oxide that is presentSo. It is consider esthetic

zinc oxide eugenolNot translucent : cement is opaque so not consider asthetic

glass ionomer cement It is translucent due to presence of glassThe refractive index of glass ionomer is similar ot enomel and dentine so it is used with porcelain labial margin technique

Composite resin cementIt is translucent

Clinical notecementation of porcelain jacket crown and porcelain laminates Require cement that has :translucency early high mechanical strength adhesive to treated porcelain and tooth surfaceSo cement of choice is Composite resin cement
