President’s Message 2018

Welcome to the 54th Estevan and District Music Festival! We are a proud member of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association and appreciate the efforts of those volunteers who have come before us to create and maintain a platform to perform music. Areas of competition for musicians include: voice, piano, guitar, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, pipe and electronic organ, choir/school music, speech arts, small ensembles, as well as band and orchestra classes. There are approximately 600 entries in our district festival this year.

I would like to acknowledge the committee who has volunteered many hours to organize this event. This festival executive is a dedicated group who is committed to providing a successful experience for all. They believe in promoting music and the arts in our community and in encouraging our young people to participate. Thank you to the past presidents- Pam Dechief and Anita Kuntz – who have shared their wealth of knowledge with me in my first year as president, and with the members as many navigate new roles within the committee.

Every volunteer at our festival is important and appreciated. Thank you for giving your time and talents so that our young musicians can continue to grow in their musical endeavours.

The EMF would like to salute and thank the many businesses, organizations and individuals who contribute to our festival through scholarships, awards and donations.

Thank you to our performers for your efforts in preparing for the festival. Your hard work has enabled you to enjoy your music and to share it with others. Thank you to the teachers, directors, adjudicators and accompanists who share their knowledge and love of music. We look forward to a wonderful festival of music.

Adjudicator’s Biographies - 2018

Audrey Watson – Piano Rosthern, Saskatchewan Audrey Watson was born in Saskatoon and raised in Vonda, SK. She received most of her early musical education with Thomas Day. She returned to music studies as an adult, first with Janet Caldwell in Meadow Lake, then, after moving to Rosthern, she returned to the studio of Thomas Day. She received her Associate diploma (Teacher’s) while studying with Sheila Shinkewski. In 2002 Audrey was awarded the Dorothy Bee Memorial Scholarship from the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association. In 2010 Audrey returned to studies with Kathleen Lohrenz Gable, focusing on pedagogy and repertoire. Audrey is active in the Saskatchewan Valley Music Festival, having completed two terms as President. She is a member of the Saskatoon Branch of the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association (SRMTA). She also served on the provincial board of SRMTA completing a term as provincial president. Audrey maintains an active studio in Rosthern where she teaches piano and theory. She is pianist/organist and co-music director at her church. She is married to husband, George and they have three grown children.

Marcia McLean – Vocal/Speech Arts Swift Current, Saskatchewan

Marcia is currently the artistic director of the Swift Current Oratorio Choir and an adult chamber choir, Prairie Spirit. Mrs. McLean also teaches private voice lessons, gives choral workshops and adjudicates. She adjudicates for the Saskatchewan Music Festivals and has adjudicated at the Moose jaw Band and Choir Festival, Brandon Jazz Festival and Brandon Music Festival. In January of 2014, members of the Oratorio Choir travelled to New York to perform Karl Jenkin’s “Stabat Mater” in Carnegie Hall with several choirs from around the world. In 2010, she retired after 18 years as Director of Choral Music at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School. There she conducted an 80-voice concert choir, a vocal jazz ensemble and the Comp. Chamber Singers. In 2010, the Chamber Singers were selected to perform at the Association of Canadian Choral Community’s convention held in Saskatoon, and in 2007 performed at Festival 500 in Newfoundland. In addition, the choir presented Showcase Concerts at the Rocky Mountain Festival and won awards at Music Fest Canada and the Heritage Music Festival. Marcia was the founding director of the Swift Current Children’s Choir and conducted the choir for 12 years. Marcia serves on the board of the Swift Current Music Festival and is a member of the Sask Choral Federation. She served as President of the Sask Choral Federation for 4 years and has just completed her term on the board. Mrs. McLean was guest conductor of the Sask. Choral Federation choir camp in the summer of 2011 and on numerous occasions, served as vocal coach at the SCF summer camps. In 2004, Mrs. McLean was awarded the “Pro Musica Award” by the Sask. Choral Federation for outstanding service in the choral community. In 2001, she received the “Paul Harris Fellowship” from the Swift Current Rotary Club for outstanding leadership and community work with young people. Prior to teaching in Swift Current, Marcia taught music and choir at Esterhazy High School for 12 years, conducting both vocal jazz and concert choir. Mrs. McLean received her Bachelor of Music at Brandon University.

Janie Fries – Band (Woodwinds) Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Throughout the course of her teaching career, Janie Fries has taught the gamut from Pre-K to university music education classes including band, strings, choral and classroom music. The majority of her experiences have come from the students in the Moose Jaw Catholic schools. Her Master in Music Education degree was obtained from Brandon University. She is a member of both the Moose Jaw Music Festival and has been involved with the Moose Jaw Band and Choral Festival committee since 1995. She has been actively involved in Saskatchewan Arts Education curriculum writing, advising and actualizing and has written lessons for the National Arts Centre “Music Alive Program”, providing lessons for the non-specialist music teacher in Saskatchewan schools. She is a sessional lecturer at the University of Regina teaching Orff Levels I and II during the summer and has been a recipient of the Sylvia Yam award for teaching excellence, presented by the Saskatchewan Orff Chapter. She adjudicates throughout the province at local music festivals and SpringFest. Her present musical endeavours include conducting the Moose Jaw Community String Orchestra, and playing horn in the Moose Jaw Community Band.

Greg McLean – Band (Brass) Swift Current, Saskatchewan

Greg McLean is a freelance musician and conductor. He most recently served an interim term as Director of Bands at the University of Regina following 35 years as a high school instrumental music director, the last 21 years of which were spent at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School in Swift Current, SK. Under Mr. McLean's direction, the Senior Wind Orchestra and Senior Jazz Ensemble received many awards, including Gold medals at MusicFest Canada in 1993, 1995 and 1998. The Wind Orchestra performed guest showcase concerts at the Banff Rocky Mountain Festival in 1996, 1997, 2007 and 2009 and at the

Moose Jaw International Festival in 1999 and 2003. The senior jazz ensemble, Thursday Night Jazz, was also featured in a showcase concert in 2008 for the Rocky Mountain Festival. He is a full-time faculty member of the Prairieland Summer Jazz Camp in Regina and has been guest conductor and brass coach at Saskatchewan summer band camps for over twenty-five years. Mr. McLean is frequently invited to adjudicate at festivals across Canada, to conduct workshops and reading sessions, and to direct honour groups. He has presented sessions at the SK Music Conference, the Brandon University Da Capo Conference and the Brandon Jazz Festival. He directed the SMC Jazz Band for 2011 & 2012. Mr. McLean has performed in the trumpet section of the Sawatzky Big Band, the Bob Moyer Big Band and the Prairieland Jazz Camp Faculty Band. Most recently he has formed the Swift Current Jazz Orchestra and is the Artistic Director and lead trumpet for the ensemble. He is also the co-artistic director and orchestra conductor for the Swift Current Oratorio Choir, conducting members of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and vocal soloists each spring. Past performances have included Handel’s “Messiah”, Haydn’s “Creation”, Rutter’s “Requiem”, the “Mass for Peace“ and ”Requiem” by Karl Jenkins, and Mozart’s ”Requiem”. In 2014 the oratorio choir performed at Carnegie Hall in NYC in a performance of Jenkins’ “Stabat Mater”. Two newer choral works were performed in 2015: “Missa Pax” by Timothy Corlis and “Requiem for the Living” by Dan Forrest. Mr. McLean received his Bachelor of Music degree from Brandon University. His graduate work included a Graduate Diploma in conducting and wind repertoire from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Manitoba. His mentors have included Dr. Dale Lonis of the University of Manitoba and Earl Stafford of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. His trumpet teachers have included brass specialist, Dr. D. S. Reinhardt of Philadelphia and Vincent Cichowicz of the Chicago Symphony. In 2001 he received the “Paul Harris Fellowship”from the Swift Current Rotary Club for outstanding leadership and community work with young people. He was also the recipient of the “Outstanding Achievement Award” presented by the Saskatchewan Music Educator’s Association in 2006.

The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association has a proud heritage. It provides a platform for music festival performances for students across the province. This body represents 47 district community music festival organizations across the province. Many communities all over Saskatchewan are involved annually in producing volunteer-run district festivals, workshops and concerts. This reaches more than 70,000 people when you consider participants, volunteers and audience members.
