Establishing a Work Morning Routine for

your Kids

ByJesus’ Sacred Heart School

Re-frame your idea of a routine that actually works

Every morning you might have a good fight with your kids to keep them on track. Getting ready for school, packing up tiffin boxes and doing all the things together is surely a hectic job to do. Re-framing your ideas a bit and establishing a new work morning routine would surely boost your kid a lot. You must know exactly what needs to be done, and in what order it must be done.

When Your Patience Has Run Out

If you find yourself losing patience with how much time you're wasting try to wake your child in the morning.  These kinds of mornings are all too common in households with school-aged children. Be encouraged. You can turn this around. Here are some tips for smoother and saner mornings.

Have a Conversation with your Child

It's important to talk about your morning routine with your child, but morning is not the best time for that discussion. Set some time aside later in the day where you and your child can discuss your rules and expectation. Let your child know what isn't working and what must change.

Start with Small Changes

Always make a start with small changes. While there are likely many things you are anxious to change in your morning routine, start out by selecting one or two behaviors at a time.  Let your child know what isn't working and what must change.

Provide Good Coaching

Parents work so hard to help their child, but in reality, it just isn't working. Once you've communicated the rules and expectations regarding mornings, all you need to do at that point is to remind your child of those rules. Get out of your child's way and let them take responsibility for what has been agreed upon.

Consequences Are a Great Teacher

Your child's school likely has policies in place enforcing certain consequences when policies are violated. This may include detention for habitually showing up late, or extra work for missed homework.

Avoid the Arguments, No Matter What

Rather than arguing, remind your child of what is expected, provide some coaching for keeping them on track, and then step back. It may take some time and practice, but hang in there and keep trying and in time, you'll find your mornings to be a lot more enjoyable.
