Editors Spot:

Firstly on behalf of the committee I would like to thank

all of you who attended the 15th Dalmatian National.

Also a huge thank you to our Patron, Joan Roseworn.

It was a huge two days, with a lot happening on the

CCCQ grounds and behind the scenes.

I would personally like to thank my good friend, Wendy

Maxwell who was our photographer for the event. A lot

of people don’t realise the time and commitment that

goes into taking the photos, and then editing them.

It’s a huge job, and I am grateful for the results!

While we are still on the topic of the National, in this

issue you will find the results and also the conformation

judges critique. Until next time,

Samantha Hartley

Dotty idea for Dauntsey Couple’s Wedding.

Dog lovers Phil and Lou Garton enjoyed their dream wedding—with 58 human guests and 31 Dal-

matians.

The couple, who live in Dauntsey, took along their

own five Dalmatians for the wedding in June.

The unusual nuptials will feature on channel 4 show,

Wedding House. The show follows the fortunes of

different couples having bizarre wedding ceremonies.

The couple, who have been together for 16 years,

were looking for a suitable venue for a dog-themed

wedding when they saw an advert for the show.

After a discussion about what they wanted the

wedding day, plans were taken over by the

programme makers.

Dog trainer Mrs Garton, 38, said: “It was so nice not having to worry about organising anything.

The important thing was we were getting married with our friends and our dogs.”

The couple were wed at Sundridge Park in Kent, UK.

Judges Conformation Critique It was a great honour and privilege to be invited to

judge this prestigious National Specialty and I

must say a big thank you to the Dalmatian

Association of Queensland Inc. for hosting and

running the show so competently. Everyone

worked so hard to make this a very special

occasion for the exhibitors and for me too. The

venue was excellent with a ring of excellent size,

parking was convenient and there was plenty of

shade for the Dalmatians. Hospitality was

generous and there was a huge array of splendid

prizes on offer. Thanks also go to my steward

Mrs. J Ruddle and writer Mrs. C Elliot and also to

Club Patron Mrs. Joan Roseworn for keeping me

company at lunch.

A sincere thank you to all the exhibitors, some of

whom drove significant distances, to show their

Dalmatians under me, and to all of you who took

my decisions with such good grace. I was

advised at the beginning of the show to ensure

that I took my time judging and that’s what I did. I

wanted to be sure that everyone had sufficient

opportunity to gait and stand their dogs so that I

could thoroughly assess the virtues of each

Dalmatian. That’s why folks, you did so much

moving around rather than a cursory once round

and across the ring and back!

My general remarks are as follows: I loved my line

ups…..you have are some beautiful quality

Dalmatians who could win anywhere in the world.

Because of the consistency of breed type and

good movement, sadly, not enough first prizes to

award! These Dalmatians meet the standard, have

substance with elegance and can easily do the job

demanded of a carriage dog.

Endurance would not be a problem for these dogs.

I found all the dogs temperaments to be very good

and there was even a ‘smiler’, which is always

delightful. Spotting was generally very good with

some lovely liver colour. My final decision was

extremely close: they are all exceptional examples

of the breed.

Generally fronts were very good with correct

angulation and good depth of brisket. There is a

range of types. There is an issue with some feet…

a few are too flat and some are hare footed. Coats

are generally very good and there are some very

attractive heads albeit that there are a few light

eyes. Some dogs looked fabulous standing but

were somewhat disappointing on the move and

paid the price. All the exhibitors made a good job

of free standing their dogs BUT there is this

dreadful practice emerging in the exhibition of

Dalmatians, whereby the handler stacks the dog

so that their fronts are pushed forward and top

lines are sloping down at the rear. This spoils the

dogs’ top line and causes over angulation of the

rear quarters…it looks dreadful and most

untypical and can affect the final award. Another

issue, again seen all over the world, is the ‘race’

around the ring at speed. A steady pace shows all

that needs to be seen!

I left with memories that I will never forget; the

lovely dogs I saw, and the friendliness of the

exhibitors.

Thank you,

Christina Pickup
