Pro Bono Opportunities: Volunteers Needed inWake of COVID-19
The W-BLLA’s Pro Bono Committee is looking for attorneys to volunteer in advance of the anticipated surge in cases in the wake of theCOVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout. The Committee’s initial focus is on landlord-tenant cases,, but we are also looking for attorneys for protection from abuse (PFA) cases (Plaintiff andDefendant), custody matters (limited representation only), and childsupport contempt hearings.
In addition to seeking volunteer attorneys,, we are also looking for volunteer mentors who can be available to answer questions for attorneys who may have never handled a case in one of these areas.
If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail
[email protected] indicating which practice areas you are interested in and whether you want to volunteer to take a case or serve as a mentor.
By volunteering to take a case, you would only be committing to handling one hearing subject to your availability.. Please alsocontact us if you are interested in joining the Pro Bono Committee or volunteering in any other practice area.

Chairperson Jim Oschal opened the meeting with a mo-ment of silence for Judges Caputo and Munley. Judge Saporito gave a status report on the middle district as operat-ing on a full schedule just no in-person meetings. The Court is operating on the COOP plan where all the court personnel are working remotely. It is not known when jury trials will resume. The Judge indicated he is conducting telephonic, Web Ex and now Zoom for settlement conferences, status conferences, scheduling and discovery hearings. The Court has had a large number of prisoners’ motions regarding CO-VID 19. All of the cases assigned to Judges Caputo and Munley have been assigned to Magistrate Judge Carlson for reassignment to the other Magistrate Judges. Approximately 125 cases were closed in April.
The Committee is finalizing an early fall date for a Nuts & Bolts Federal Practice CLE that will tentatively be held at the Wilkes-Barre Federal Courthouse or by Zoom if it is not possible to have an in-person CLE.
