Sukhrob Abdushukurov Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship LaGuardia Community College

Sukhrob Abdushukurov, a 2019 graduate of LaGuardia Community College, was one of just 61 community college students from across the country selected as this year’s Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars. Born in Uzbekistan, Sukhrob came to the U.S. three years ago. The Cooke scholarship will allow him to continue his education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Gabriella Cook Francis Winner of the Marshall Scholarship Hunter College

Gabriella won the prestigious Marshall Scholarship for graduate study at Oxford University. She plans to study how faltering democracies turn into authoritarian governments. While at Hunter, she organized and moderated town-hall meetings for the Office of the Manhattan Borough President and coordinated events at Hunter’s Roosevelt House.

Eri Nox Winner of the Fulbright Brooklyn College

Eri is a recipient of the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange scholarship to conduct research and teach English in countries around the world. Eri, who studied playwriting at Brooklyn College, is heading to Poland to adapt an English version of the play “Oni”— the masculine form of “they.” Eri will research the use of gender-specific pronouns and the impact of “they” as a singular pronoun.

Akil Fletcher National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow City College of New York

Akil is a recipient of the NSF, a prestigious 3-year research fellowship which provides a stipend of $34,000 a year and a $12,000 tuition allowance. Akil plans to explore how race and culture intersect in digital gaming spaces. Akil, who has always been interested in gaming, studied Anthropology while at City College and hopes his work will impact students of color.
