July 2016

June was a very busy month at Lake Shore. From our Men’s Member Guest Invitational to our Couples Outing and the Sounds on the Shore Series, there was something happening here every week! Our Juniors and Ladies Golf Clinics are also underway and are also open to Social Members. See our Facebook Events Page or the Golf section in the Monthly Newsletter for complete details.

July EventsWe have a number of exciting events coming up this month, beginning with our Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. Join us on Monday, July 4th for a full day of events for the entire family. We will have a rock wall, bounce house, carnival games, and as always fireworks at dusk. Guests are welcome! Call Carol at 833-0894 x115 to reserve your tickets today. This month’s Kids Movie Night on July 2nd will feature Zootopia, one of this year’s most favorably reviewed animated movies. Our monthly Couples Outing will be held on Friday, July 8th and will have a “Let Freedom Ring” theme. Dress in your best American Colors. Finally, the Sounds on the Shore Summer Music Series continues on Friday, July 22nd with Mark Beery. For all of the latest information on Lake Shore’s events, be sure to like our Facebook page. Are you looking for a way to get involved or engage more with the Club? We currently have openings on a number of our committees where you can help us to continually improve LSCC. Also, we have begun rewarding our members that engage with us online. We appreciate you sharing our events and letting us know about the time you spend here! Keep commenting, sharing, mentioning, and checking-in with us and you just might receive something beyond recognition for your efforts!

July will be the LAST MONTH for the FREE Golf Upgrade for our Social Members. Any Social Member who is in good standing may upgrade during the month of July and pay no initiation fee or upgrade fee. Beginning August 1, 2016, you will begin paying your new monthly dues. You can return to a Social Membership at any time if you find that the Golf Membership just wasn’t for you. There would be no penalty for the downgrade, but you would not have the opportunity to upgrade to a Golf Membership again for 12 months or you would be responsible for all back dues.

New Members: Join Initiation FREE!With a commitment of a one-year Social or two-year Golf Membership, your initiation fee will be waived. That is a value of $750 for Social Members and $4,500 for Golf Members.

Young Professional MembershipsAdults between the ages of 21 and 36 may join as a new Golf or Social Member for half-off monthly dues until they reach the age of 36.

Corporate MembershipsLake Shore offers a number of Corporate Membership options for our local businesses. Whether you are looking to entertain prospective clients on the course or host regular meetings in our facilities, we can work with you on a membership program that will suit your organization’s unique needs.

JULY IS THE LAST OPPORTUNITY … For Golf Upgrade for Social members

TENNIS TIPS FROM ANDYSPLIT AND EXPLODE

Adapted from ‘Tennis Match’ Aug. 1995, p.49, Dr.Paul Roetert

Performing a ‘split and explode’ is critical on the return of serve or serve and volley so you can quickly react to the ball. But efficient split-step use goes importantly beyond those situations. Top players execute a split-step before every stroke to establish a support base to get to the next shot in a balanced and speedy manner. When you quickly bend your knees, you take the weight off your feet for a split second just like the ‘unweighting’ technique skiers use to turn. Try this on your bathroom scale. Stand up straight on your scale to see your weight. Then, lower yourself quickly by bending your knees. While you were knee-bending, first, the needle went down. This ‘unweighting’ lasts for only the split second your body is falling through the air. (If you were swift enough, even the weight of your feet would have been absent on the scale!) When you stopped knee-bending, the scale spiked above your actual weight. This ‘unweighting’ concept can help your tennis movement skills intensely. By quickly decreasing and increasing your ground reaction force, you can be balanced and explode to the next shot in any direction as rapidly and forcefully as possible. To properly ‘split and explode,’ your feet should be shoulder width apart, your weight on the balls of your feet, and your upper body leaning slightly forward. With your racquet in front of your body, quickly bend your knees to get on-balance and be prepared to move in any direction. Take a slight hop off the ground, land on the balls of your feet, and coil to spring for the next shot. Watch top pros; they mini-split and explode before each stroke just as their opponent initiates his/her forward swing. This establishes a support base so they can promptly react to the next shot.During an average hard court point, you change direction about 5 times in 5 seconds. You need to be balanced with your center of gravity over your support base. When you lean forward or lunge for a wide shot, your center of gravity moves in that direction making it difficult to move again until your re-center your support base. The skill is to get to the ball quickly and still be adequately balanced to execute a powerful shot. Performing a split-step helps you get balanced before moving to the next shot. Keeping your body and center of balance under control while you are moving is the key to high performance tennis. Be light on your toes, bend your knees slightly, and keep your upper body balanced so you can explode to the next shot. Remember, a proper split-step is a way to move and ‘Compete like a Champion.’
