Suitable for groups as well as individuals, our courses can be completed for personal or professional reasons. ClImbINg Wall aWaRD (TRaININg)

This two day Climbing Wall Award training course is designed to give candidates the skills and knowledge needed to supervise novices climbing on indoor or outdoor climbingwalls,artificialbouldersandtowers.

The course covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing. Candidates will be exposed to new ideas and climbing techniques and will have the opportunity to build on their existing skills.

Candidates will be eligible for the Climbing Wall Award assessment following this training, after a consolidation period.

This one day course assesses candidates on their ability to supervise novices during climbing wall activities.

The assessment is the next step for climbers who have completed the Climbing Wall Award training, or have been granted exemption from training, and are ready to achieve the Climbing Wall Award. Candidates will be tested on their skills, knowledge and suitability in safely supervising climbing on indoor or outdoor climbingwalls,artificialbouldersandtowers.

On passing the assessment, candidates will receive the Climbing Wall Award.

SINglE PITCh aWaRD (TRaININg)

This two day training course provides the skills needed to supervise novices during single pitch climbing activities.

It is ideal for anyone in a position of responsibility during single pitch rock climbing. It helps candidates to become capable in providing a high standard of supervision, so that people can experience safe and enjoyable climbing sessions. The training course covers group management, bouldering, top roping, leading, problem avoidance, problem solving, abseiling and more.

Candidates will be eligible for the Single Pitch Award assessment following this training, after a consolidation period.

This six day training course provides the skills needed to be able to lead groups of walkers in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland.

This is a hands-on training course that gives potential mountain leaders the opportunity to gain experience and develop technical competence in leading walks in mountainous areas in summer conditions. Course content includes group management, navigation, hazards, equipment, expedition skills, weather and more.

mOUNTaIN lEaDER (aSSESSmENT)

Thisfivedaycourseassessesaspiring mountain leaders on their ability to lead groups of walkers in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland.

The assessment is the next step for candidates who have completed Mountain Leader training and are ready to demonstrate their competency and achieve the Mountain Leader Award. Candidates will be assessed on a combination of technical skills, experience and personal leadership qualities.

WalKINg aND EXPEDITION

EXPEDITION mODUlE

This module is designed as an addition to the Lowland Leader and Hill and Moorland Leader Awards. It trains and assess those who wish to lead groups on multi day camping expeditions in terrain and conditions within the scope of their leadership award.

The course will cover expedition equipment; expedition food and cooking; expedition planning and leadership; training and supervising expedition groups.

On passing this assessment candidates will receive the Expedition Module for walking leaders.

lOWlaND lEaDER (TRaININg)

This two day Lowland Leader Award course trains candidates in the skills required to lead day walks in lowland countryside and woodland.

The course allows candidates to build on their experience and demonstrate their ability in leading groups in summer conditions. Course content will include leadership skills and group management, walking skills, planning a walk, basic mapworkandroutefindingskills,equipment, hazards, emergency procedures and more.

bCU FOUNDaTION SaFETy RESCUE

This one day training course provides candidates with the safety and rescue skills needed to paddle safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment.

The course forms the foundations of safety and rescue throughoutallBCUqualifications.Itprovidespaddlerswith the knowledge to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Course content includes boat-based rescues and candidates will use canoes and kayaks most relevant to their normal coaching environment. Training covers as many craft as possible, including canoes and kayaks.

bCU 1 STaR PaDDlESPORT (CaNOE aND KayaK)

This one day course provides a clear stepping-stone to becoming a paddler in both canoes and kayaks.

Covering the essentials of paddlesports, candidates will receive coaching on a range of paddling skills and techniques. The emphasis of the course is on learning correct safe practice as well as enjoyment, leaving paddlers in a fantastic position to get more from their time on the water.

The award can be taken in any type of paddlesport craft, including canoes, kayaks, sit-on-tops and stand up paddle boards.

bCU 2 STaR PaDDlESPORT (CaNOE aND KayaK)

This four day training and one day assessment course equips candidates with the paddlesport skills needed to confidentlypaddleincanoesandkayaksonflatwater.

Building on foundation knowledge gained in BCU 1 Star, this is an improver course that helps paddlers to bolster their paddlesport abilities. Successful performance at this level indicates that candidates are able to control the movement of both canoes and kayaksonflatwater,andhaveanunderstandingofhowthe paddle, boat and water interact.

The award can be taken in any type of paddlesport craft, including canoes, kayaks, sit-on-tops and stand up paddle boards.

This is a two day course that provides candidates with the skills and knowledge required to be able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

The intermediate powerboat course is for those wishing to build upon the skills learnt in Level 2 who already have knowledge of navigation theory. The course covers many important aspects of powerboating, including planning a day cruise, boat preparation and advanced boat handling in differing conditions.

Rya POWERbOaT INSTRUCTOR

This four day course is for any experienced powerboat helm who is looking to teach the RYA Powerboat Scheme.

Under supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor, this course will provide candidates with the skillsandcertificationneededto teach RYA Powerboat Level 1 and Level 2 courses. Those who have completed the Safety Boat course may also teach RYA Safety Boat. Candidates will explore all aspects of becoming an RYA Powerboat Instructor. The course content covers lesson planning, teaching styles, use of questioning and much more.

This two day course provides the skills and knowledge needed to confidentlyoperateapowerboat.

The course is designed for those looking to develop skills in powerboating. The course covers many aspects of powerboating such as close quarters handling, higher speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. Following the course, candidates are expected to be confidentpowerboaterswhoareaware of their own limitations, and those of their craft.

Rya SaFETy bOaT

This two day course equips experienced individuals with the skills needed to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft.

The course covers a number of rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying. It is ideal for sailing club or yacht club volunteers, as well as anybody wishing to improve their helming skills. After completion of the course, participants will be able to act as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleetofdinghies,windsurfersandcanoes, or for racing or training activities.

POWERbOaT

Rya INlaND WaTERWayS hElmSmaN’S COURSEThis two day course, or one day assessment, provides boaters with the essential skills and knowledge to helm a vessel safely on inland waterways.

Thecourseisidealforfirsttimers, as well as more seasoned skippers, who are looking to cruise the UK’s inland waterways or Europe’s extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals.

The course covers the requirements of the inland boater, whether they are a narrowboat owner or a cruiser enthusiast, and provides plenty of tips to make boating safer and more enjoyable.

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, is all that is needed to gain a basic understanding of dinghy sailing.

It is a basic introduction that teaches simple sailing techniques and how to control a boat. It also gives candidates the opportunity to experience the steering and handling of a dinghy. The course will include – and is not limited to – launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat and basic sailing procedures.

Rya yOUTh SaIlINg STagE 2

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, provides the practical range of sailing skills and knowledge to become a confidentdinghysailor.

This is a Stage 2 course that builds on the dinghy sailing abilities gained in Stage 1. Candidates will discover new skills while buildingconfidenceinawiderangeofsailing techniques, such as rope work and collision avoidance. After completing this course, candidates are expected to be able to track and control boat speed, understand basic principles and be well on the way to beingaconfidentsmallboatsailor.

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, teaches candidates to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.

This course aims to teach candidates a wide range of sailing skills in dinghy sailing and builds on the knowledge gained in Stage 1 and Stage 2. It is also the equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme. The course will cover many intermediate sailing skills such as rigging, launching and sailing in different directions.

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, provides candidates with the skills and knowledge required to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solveavarietyofproblemsafloat.

This course builds on the skills and knowledge gained in Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 Youth Sailing courses. After completing this course, candidates are expected to be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, along with the ability to sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.

This CEVNI course allows candidates to demonstrate they hold the knowledge required by law to sail on any of the inland waterways on the European Continent.

Signs, rules and procedures for navigating many of the European inland waterways will all be covered within this course.

All of our activities, although adventurous, are also educational, safe, and delivered by our competent team.

In line with our Codes of Practice, all of the activities offered by Essex Outdoors are delivered by staff who have been trained in accordance with both Essex County Council and national governing body (NGB) guidelines.

All of our centres are inspected and approved by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Service (AALS). All of our staff have undergone Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks prior to their employment with us, and all of our instructors have attended child protection and/or safeguarding training.

QualifiedFirstAidersarealwayson-siteatallofourcentres, and where residential accommodation is provided a Duty Person is always on-site 24 hours a day, to assist in the event of any emergency.

TERmS aND CONDITIONS

Please note, whilst every effort is made to ensure that courses run according to the published programme, Essex Outdoors reserves the right to amend or cancel any of the courses where it believes on reasonable grounds that cancellation is necessary due to dangerous or unsuitable conditions or if the numbers of bookings have failed to reach a workable minimum.

In the event of a cancellation by Essex Outdoors, you will be offered a suitable alternative date, if available, or a refund of the full fee paid.
