Essex Outdoors provides a wide range of high quality professional and technical courses from four centres in Essex and beyond. Whether you are looking for a one-off course, starting a new hobby or advancing your qualifications,you’llfindarangeofcoursestosuityourrequirements.

Fromclimbingandexpeditionsthroughtosailing,firstaidand specialist courses for teachers, our range of courses will engage and inspire. Suitable for groups as well as individuals, our courses can be completed for personal or professional reasons. We can also run courses on request for groups, so please get in touch if you would like to discuss this option.

Your safety and security is our key priority which is why Essex Outdoors fully complies to the Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALS) which ensures that activity providers follow good safety management practices.

Additionally, we hold the Adventuremark, the Adventure Activity Industry Advisory Committee’s non-statutory safety scheme. ClImbINg Wall aWaRD (TRaININg)

This two day Climbing Wall Award training course is designed to give candidates the skills and knowledge needed to supervise novices climbing on indoor or outdoor climbingwalls,artificialbouldersandtowers.

The course covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing. Candidates will be exposed to new ideas and climbing techniques and will have the opportunity to build on their existing skills.

Candidates will be eligible for the Climbing Wall Award assessment following this training, after a consolidation period.

This one day course assesses candidates on their ability to supervise novices during climbing wall activities.

The assessment is the next step for climbers who have completed the Climbing Wall Award training, or have been granted exemption from training, and are ready to achieve the Climbing Wall Award. Candidates will be tested on their skills, knowledge and suitability in safely supervising climbing on indoor or outdoor climbingwalls,artificialbouldersandtowers.

On passing the assessment, candidates will receive the Climbing Wall Award.

SINglE PITCh aWaRD (TRaININg)

This two day training course provides the skills needed to supervise novices during single pitch climbing activities.

It is ideal for anyone in a position of responsibility during single pitch rock climbing. It helps candidates to become capable in providing a high standard of supervision, so that people can experience safe and enjoyable climbing sessions. The training course covers group management, bouldering, top roping, leading, problem avoidance, problem solving, abseiling and more.

Candidates will be eligible for the Single Pitch Award assessment following this training, after a consolidation period.

This two day course assesses candidates on their ability to supervise single pitch rock climbing activities.

On passing the assessment, candidates will receive the Single Pitch Award.

mOUNTaIN lEaDER (TRaININg)

This six day training course provides the skills needed to be able to lead groups of walkers in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland.

This is a hands-on training course that gives potential mountain leaders the opportunity to gain experience and develop technical competence in leading walks in mountainous areas in summer conditions. Course content includes group management, navigation, hazards, equipment, expedition skills, weather and more.

mOUNTaIN lEaDER (aSSESSmENT)

Thisfivedaycourseassessesaspiring mountain leaders on their ability to lead groups of walkers in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland.

The assessment is the next step for candidates who have completed Mountain Leader training and are ready to demonstrate their competency and achieve the Mountain Leader Award. Candidates will be assessed on a combination of technical skills, experience and personal leadership qualities.

WalKINg aND EXPEDITION

EXPEDITION mODUlE

This module is designed as an addition to the Lowland Leader and Hill and Moorland Leader Awards. It trains and assess those who wish to lead groups on multi day camping expeditions in terrain and conditions within the scope of their leadership award.

The course will cover expedition equipment; expedition food and cooking; expedition planning and leadership; training and supervising expedition groups.

On passing this assessment candidates will receive the Expedition Module for walking leaders.

lOWlaND lEaDER (TRaININg)

This two day Lowland Leader Award course trains candidates in the skills required to lead day walks in lowland countryside and woodland.

The course allows candidates to build on their experience and demonstrate their ability in leading groups in summer conditions. Course content will include leadership skills and group management, walking skills, planning a walk, basic mapworkandroutefindingskills,equipment, hazards, emergency procedures and more.

bCU FOUNDaTION SaFETy RESCUE

This one day training course provides candidates with the safety and rescue skills needed to paddle safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment.

The course forms the foundations of safety and rescue throughoutallBCUqualifications.Itprovidespaddlerswith the knowledge to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Course content includes boat-based rescues and candidates will use canoes and kayaks most relevant to their normal coaching environment. Training covers as many craft as possible, including canoes and kayaks.

bCU 1 STaR PaDDlESPORT (CaNOE aND KayaK)

This one day course provides a clear stepping-stone to becoming a paddler in both canoes and kayaks.

Covering the essentials of paddlesports, candidates will receive coaching on a range of paddling skills and techniques. The emphasis of the course is on learning correct safe practice as well as enjoyment, leaving paddlers in a fantastic position to get more from their time on the water.

The award can be taken in any type of paddlesport craft, including canoes, kayaks, sit-on-tops and stand up paddle boards.

bCU 2 STaR PaDDlESPORT (CaNOE aND KayaK)

This four day training and one day assessment course equips candidates with the paddlesport skills needed to confidentlypaddleincanoesandkayaksonflatwater.

Building on foundation knowledge gained in BCU 1 Star, this is an improver course that helps paddlers to bolster their paddlesport abilities. Successful performance at this level indicates that candidates are able to control the movement of both canoes and kayaksonflatwater,andhaveanunderstandingofhowthe paddle, boat and water interact.

The award can be taken in any type of paddlesport craft, including canoes, kayaks, sit-on-tops and stand up paddle boards.

This two weekend course provides clear development and progression in to becoming a paddle coach in both canoe and kayak.

Following on from the four day UKCC Level 2 Training programme, the UKCC Level 2 Assessment is the essential assessment process for anyone wishing to coach paddlesport at Level 2.

Rya INTERmEDIaTE POWERbOaT

This is a two day course that provides candidates with the skills and knowledge required to be able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

The intermediate powerboat course is for those wishing to build upon the skills learnt in Level 2 who already have knowledge of navigation theory. The course covers many important aspects of powerboating, including planning a day cruise, boat preparation and advanced boat handling in differing conditions.

Rya POWERbOaT INSTRUCTOR

This four day course is for any experienced powerboat helm who is looking to teach the RYA Powerboat Scheme.

Under supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor, this course will provide candidates with the skillsandcertificationneededto teach RYA Powerboat Level 1 and Level 2 courses. Those who have completed the Safety Boat course may also teach RYA Safety Boat. Candidates will explore all aspects of becoming an RYA Powerboat Instructor. The course content covers lesson planning, teaching styles, use of questioning and much more.

This two day course provides the skills and knowledge needed to confidentlyoperateapowerboat.

The course is designed for those looking to develop skills in powerboating. The course covers many aspects of powerboating such as close quarters handling, higher speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. Following the course, candidates are expected to be confidentpowerboaterswhoareaware of their own limitations, and those of their craft.

Rya SaFETy bOaT

This two day course equips experienced individuals with the skills needed to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft.

The course covers a number of rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying. It is ideal for sailing club or yacht club volunteers, as well as anybody wishing to improve their helming skills. After completion of the course, participants will be able to act as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleetofdinghies,windsurfersandcanoes, or for racing or training activities.

POWERbOaT

Rya INlaND WaTERWayS hElmSmaN’S COURSEThis two day course, or one day assessment, provides boaters with the essential skills and knowledge to helm a vessel safely on inland waterways.

Thecourseisidealforfirsttimers, as well as more seasoned skippers, who are looking to cruise the UK’s inland waterways or Europe’s extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals.

The course covers the requirements of the inland boater, whether they are a narrowboat owner or a cruiser enthusiast, and provides plenty of tips to make boating safer and more enjoyable.

Rya yOUTh SaIlINg STagE 1

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, is all that is needed to gain a basic understanding of dinghy sailing.

It is a basic introduction that teaches simple sailing techniques and how to control a boat. It also gives candidates the opportunity to experience the steering and handling of a dinghy. The course will include – and is not limited to – launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat and basic sailing procedures.

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, provides the practical range of sailing skills and knowledge to become a confidentdinghysailor.

This is a Stage 2 course that builds on the dinghy sailing abilities gained in Stage 1. Candidates will discover new skills while buildingconfidenceinawiderangeofsailing techniques, such as rope work and collision avoidance. After completing this course, candidates are expected to be able to track and control boat speed, understand basic principles and be well on the way to beingaconfidentsmallboatsailor.

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, teaches candidates to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.

This course aims to teach candidates a wide range of sailing skills in dinghy sailing and builds on the knowledge gained in Stage 1 and Stage 2. It is also the equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme. The course will cover many intermediate sailing skills such as rigging, launching and sailing in different directions.

This two day RYA course, suitable for under 16s, provides candidates with the skills and knowledge required to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solveavarietyofproblemsafloat.

This course builds on the skills and knowledge gained in Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 Youth Sailing courses. After completing this course, candidates are expected to be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, along with the ability to sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.

Course content will include launching and recovery, revision of sailing techniques and manoeuvres and thedevelopmentoftheseformoreefficientsailing.

The course has three parts comprising of; a pre-entry assessment to check the candidates sailing abilities, four days of training and one day of moderation.

The course is ideal for RYA instructors with experience in sailing multihull craft. On completion of the course, individuals will be endorsed to teach National Sailing Schemes and Youth Sailing Schemes.

Rya DINghy INSTRUCTOR (KEElbOaT ENDORSEmENT)This two day RYA instructor course provides experienced individuals with the skills needed to become an RYA Sailing Instructor endorsed to teach in keelboat craft.

Rya CEvNI

This CEVNI course allows candidates to demonstrate they hold the knowledge required by law to sail on any of the inland waterways on the European Continent.

Signs, rules and procedures for navigating many of the European inland waterways will all be covered within this course.

On passing the CEVNI test, the Inland category on the candidate’s International CertificateofCompetence(ICC)isvalidated, indicating that they have therequiredknowledgeofthetrafficregulations applicable on inland waters.

Rya Day SKIPPER (ShORE baSED)

This RYA Day Skipper course is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge requiredtoconfidentlynavigatearoundfamiliar waters by day.

With a focus on navigation and seamanship theory, this course is designed to help candidates unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and teaches pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling. The course will also include a basic knowledge of lights to introduce sailors to night cruising.

Rya vhF (SRC)/maRINE RaDIO (ShORT RaNgE CERTIFICaTE)This one day course will give the knowledge and skills required to understand the correct procedures when operating a marine radio.

A marine radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The courseisforanyonewhoownsafixedorhandheld marine VHF radio.

Candidates will receive a Short Range Certificateoncompletionofthecourse;theminimumqualificationrequiredbylawwhenoperating such devices.

ShORE baSED

Rya FIRST aID

This eight hour course provides the essentialskillsneededtoconfidentlydeliverfirstaidinaboatingenvironment.

Thecourseexploresarangeoffirstaidsituations and is ideal for anyone who may berequiredtoundertakeemergencyfirstaid procedures on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. This is a hands-on course that combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. Course content will cover areas suchastherecoverypositioninaconfinedspace, CPR including the drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF and helicopter rescue.

This three hour course provides candidates with the skills needed to deliver basic life support in a variety of work and leisure environments.

The course is ideal for anyone who requires the necessary knowledge and life-saving abilities to deal with everyday firstaidsituations.Coursecontentwillcoverareassuchastheroleofthefirstaider, incident and casualty assessment, CPR, care of the unconscious casualty and more. Basic Life Support can also be taken as a refresher course.

EmERgENCy FIRST aID aT WORK

This six hour OFQUAL regulated, RQF course provides the essential skills needed toconfidentlydeliveremergencyfirstaid at work.

Thecourseexploresarangeoffirstaidsituations and is ideal for anyone who may berequiredtoundertakeemergencyfirstaid procedures in a work environment. This is a hands-on course that combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. Course content will cover areas such as CPR, care of the unconscious casualty, minor wounds, shock and minor burns. Emergency First Aid at Work can also be taken as a refresher course.


EmERgENCy FIRST aID aT WORK IN ThE OUTDOORS This eight hour course includes the EFAW OFQUAL regulated RQF content but has the addition of outdoor scenarios and additional outdoor subjects.

It is a hands-on course that explores many emergency situations in the outdoors and combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. The course is ideal for anyone who spends a lot of time in an outdoor setting, including DofE leaders, outdoor instructors and Expedition or RYA award holders. Course content includes CPR, care of the unconscious casualty in the outdoors, minor wounds, shock, minor burns, drowning, hypothermia and hyperthermia, and more. Emergency First Aid in the Outdoors can also be taken as a refresher course.


OUTDOOR/aCTIvITy FIRST aID

Thecourseexploresarangeoffirstaidsituationsandis ideal for anyone who may be required to undertake emergencyfirstaidproceduresoninlandwaters,rivers,estuaries or on cross channel passages. This is a hands-on course that combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning. Course content will cover areas suchastherecoverypositioninaconfinedspace,CPR including the drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF and helicopter rescue.

This practical half day or full day course gives candidates the knowledge and skills required to perform safe manual handling.

The course is suitable for anyone who is required to move objects on their own or as part of a team. It is a hands-on course that educates candidates on the principles of safer manual handling. Course content combines a mixture of practical and theoretical learning, covering the importance of safe manual handling, how to deliver risk assessments, the methods to apply safer manual handling and more.

BespokeFirstAidisdesignedtobeasflexibleanddirectedas required.

Ourhighlytrainedfirstaidinstructorscantailorfirstaidcourses to the need of your industry or workplace. These can be based on any course such as Outdoor First Aid, Basic Life Support or even the full First Aid at Work. Each of these courses will be designed with you in mind and will provide the necessary expansion on the areas of risk that are most appropriate to your environment. EXPEDITION aSSESSOR aCCREDITaTION SChEmE

This one day course provides expedition assessors with the knowledge needed to ensure that their expeditions meet the DofE’s conditions and requirements.

This is a national training route to becoming an accredited expedition assessor. It covers the role of a DofE expedition assessor, the ‘seven steps’ to assessment and recent changes to the award conditions and requirements. The course is ideal for DofE workers wishing to progress to the role of expedition assessor and DofE leaders who require reaccreditation.

EXPEDITION SUPERvISOR TRaININg

This one day training course provides expedition supervisors with an understanding of their role and the skills required to ensure they can deliver a high quality expedition experience for all young people.

This is a nationally recognised accreditation that explores the roles and responsibilities of expedition supervisors within the DofE framework. Course content includes the process of remote supervision, duty of care and emergency procedures.

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to developflexiblesupervisionplansanddeliverexpeditionsthat meet the DofE framework.

This OEAP recognised course provides training to meet the needs of staff that support school visit emergencies.

The course provides ideas and materials that will help establishments improve and develop their own emergency planning relating to visits and will support the work of EVCs. Course content will improve awareness of national and local emergency policies and procedures, provide a framework for analysing and improving establishment procedures for dealing with visit emergencies and enable emergency contacts to provide better support to Visit Leaders in the event of a visit emergency.

The National Water Safety Management Programme equips anyone working in and around water with the essential knowledge and required skills to manage water safety. It is recommended for those who are required to operate safely in a water-based environment and need to develop personal safety skills.This programme is a suite of awards which will cover:

All of our activities, although adventurous, are also educational, safe, and delivered by our competent team.

In line with our Codes of Practice, all of the activities offered by Essex Outdoors are delivered by staff who have been trained in accordance with both Essex County Council and national governing body (NGB) guidelines.

All of our centres are inspected and approved by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Service (AALS). All of our staff have undergone Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks prior to their employment with us, and all of our instructors have attended child protection and/or safeguarding training.

QualifiedFirstAidersarealwayson-siteatallofourcentres, and where residential accommodation is provided a Duty Person is always on-site 24 hours a day, to assist in the event of any emergency.
