HISTORY OF THE CLUB
With 25 years of history behind, Leopards Basketball is one of the most recognisable names in the British
game. The original club spent nine years in the British Basketball League, winning the league title twice
and the National Cup once. They also went a couple of USA tours, reached the Cup final twice and the
play-off title game on two occasions as well as finishing third in a world international tournament where
they defeated the champions of Brazil and a side containing NBA legends Magic Johnson and Chris Mullen.
When financial problems forced them to withdraw from the BBL in the summer of 2003, supporters of
the Big Cats put together a rescue plan and eventually bought National League Division One side Ware
Rebels (who were also on the verge of folding) and Essex & Herts Leopards were born. The new club
initially split their home games between the Brentwood Centre (which had become the club's home during
their final years) and Wodson Park in Ware. It took only 18 months for the new Big Cats to taste success
as they won the National Cup with a 75-71 victory against Reading Rockets, watched by a 6,000 crowd at
the NIA Birmingham.
Now called London Leopards, they continued to be one of the top clubs in Division One, and a link up with
Barking Abbey Academy saw them finish as league runners-up in 2011. All previous successes were
exceeded the following season as Leopards celebrated a treble, winning the National Cup in January
before adding the Division One League & Play-Off crowns after winning 27 of their final 28 games. The
2012/13 campaign saw the renamed Essex Leopards win the one piece of silverware that eluded them
the previous campaign as an overtime thriller against Tees Valley Mohawks saw them win the National
Trophy.

The following season saw Leopards again collect the Division One runners-up medals and they went one
better in 2015 as they against won the National League title. The 2016/17 season provided mixed fortunes
for the Big Cats. A thrilling 86-84 home victory against Manchester Giants saw them record their first
BBL Trophy victory having regularly competed in the competition since 2015, but an injury crisis saw
Leopards plummet for the Division One table, and a heart-breaking 83-82 loss at Lancashire Spinners
in their penultimate game resulted in relegation for the first time in the club's history.
Under coach Thomas Baker, the Big Cats returned to the top flight immediately and overcame a poor
start back in Division One to re-establish themselves with a seventh place finish. The summer of 2019
saw Leopards re-establish their partnership with Oaklands College in St Albans and - having also played
at Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Basildon Sporting Village, Southend Tennis & Leisure Centre, Barking
Abbey and Harlow LeisureZone, the Big Cats have restored their original Essex & Herts prefix and will
split their home games between the Brentwood Centre and Oaklands.
The future looks bright for The Big Cats, in recent months the club have re-established themselves as
playoff contenders in Division One and with the announcement on partnerships that include Oaklands
College, Dynamic People Ltd and A-Z Basketball, the club is looking for more sponsors to come on board
and be part of an exciting future. To see how your organisation can be part of this please contact the
club General Manager Dave Ryan on 07828 470015 or email the club at [email protected]

7. SOCIAL MEDIA/OUTREACH
As a club Leopards have always had a strong following across our social media platforms. On Facebook
we have over 1,600 page likes, and our posts regularly reach 1,500 people with an engagement rate of
33% according to Facebook statistics. In the month of May our post reached in total 5000 people with
engagements of around 1,500 generating new page links and content viewed across the world.
On Twitter we recently hit over 2,000 followers and our posts often have over 500 impressions
according to Twitter statistics. We have seen this grow at a steady rate across the season and we look
forward to seeing this increase further.
Having been relatively new to Instagram, we have seen a sharp increase of the last couple of years this
was helped when we took over our Governing Bodies Instagram page for a weekend leading up to our
cup semi-final against Solent Kestrels last season. We are close to reaching 500 followers on Instagram
and have been recognised as one of the fastest growing basketball clubs in our division with an average
of 10% increase a month on Instagram across the season.
Our games are videoed and shared on Krossover, an American analytics software company, thanks to a
deal that our Governing Body has which allows teams to upload game footage for it to be broken down
and analysed to provide game stats and footage that is shared across the country, making the league
more competitive and it also provides a wider platform for us to market ourselves within.
The club is committed to growing our social media and outreach programmes and potential investors
would see their organisations benefit from a wide audience that the club currently operates in. Come
and join us on our journey and see the power that Basketball and Leopards can have in helping your
organisation grow.
