The UKRO 2014: Rescue Essex event provides a unique opportunity for key buyers to see, touch and discuss the latest technology, ideas and initiatives focused on improving public safety and assisting the emergency services.
That’s why you can’t afford to miss out. We are giving you a platform to promote your quality products and services to people who are really interested.
The UKRO event itself provides a unique opportunity for companies to showcase their commercial offering and we’ll be doing all we can to drive traffic to your pitch, be it as an exhibitor or as a supporter of one of our other key sponsorship opportunities.
We want to put our sponsors and supporters at the heart of the Essex event. We already have plans to site exhibitors close to their key areas of interest and behind the scenes to support the UKRO 2014 technical challenges, we are organising a whole host of activities to draw in the crowds including a community safety village and a toughest young firefighter event which will take place at the same venue at the same time.
To make sure we understand exactly what you want to get out of the event, we’ll be holding a series of sponsor evenings in advance of the event so that you can tell us how you’d like to operate, who you’d like us to invite and whether we can stage specific events in support of your promotion and advertising activities.
If you want to reach key professionals with decision making authority for purchasing, then our event is a must. Senior fire officers will be attending to support their local teams and we will make sure we find a way to raise your profile.
For more information visit the ECFRS website.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service
(ECFRS) was formed on 1st April 1948
(originally named “Essex Fire Brigade”).
The patch covers 367,000 hectares and a
population of more than 1.74 million which
is 14 local Authority areas, Essex is one of
the largest County fire services in the UK.
The county contains every conceivable risk
- oil and gas terminals, a power station, two
airports, docks, and arguably the country’s
busiest motorway, the M25 which runs through
the heart of our ground.
As well as fighting fires, attending road
accidents and dealing with major emergencies,
we are responsibilities for preventative
community safety work. We have embarked
on a number of innovative schemes to educate
and protect those most vulnerable in our
communities.
ECFRS currently employ 890 wholetime and
466 retained firefighters, 46 control staff and
253 support staff. We have 50 fire stations -
12 wholetime, 34 retained, 4 day crewed, plus
one USAR station (Urban Search and Rescue).
On average, ECFRS attends 24,490 incidents a
year (67 a day).
ECFRS mission is: Save and protect lives,
property and the environment.
Essex and Colchester
Essex has excellent transport links from
other parts of the country, with two main rail
lines and a comprehensive network of other
rail links. Stansted Airport is to the north-west,
and Southend airport to the south-east of the
County. Harwich is to the north-east and has
regular ferry sailings to Europe. Essex has
over 7500 km of roads, with the M11 and
M25 motorways, as well as major trunk routes
linking all parts of the county. The M11 gives fast
access to London, Cambridge, the midlands
and the north, while the M25 gives access to
the national motorway network that reaches out
to all parts of the UK, and across to Europe.
Essex is has large areas of rural countryside,
It has over 350 miles of coastline with plenty
of tidal streams and estuaries. Essex can offer
everything from traditional seaside resorts such
as Clacton and Walton-on-the-Naze to villages
and ports such as Brightlingsea and Maldon.
Southend boasts the world’s longest pier at
1.3miles.
Essex is steeped in natural beauty and
heritage with seven country parks, visitor
farms, vineyards, heritage sites, woodland
trails, coastland and historic parkland, there is
very little Essex cannot offer. There are many
attractive villages and small market towns.
Notable buildings include Audley End House,
a Jacobean mansion near Saffron Walden,
Hylands House in Chelmsford, a neo-classical
style villa in around 500 acres of landscape,
Layer Marney Tower near Colchester and
Ingatestone Hall.
Constable country is situated in the north east
of the County, where you will find Colchester, the
country’s oldest recorded town.
During the 1850s and 1860s Colchester first
became a garrison town, and remains to the
present day. Colchester formed its first volunteer
fire brigade in 1878. In 1882-3 a redbrick water
tower was built, it is known locally as Jumbo.
Castle Park opened in 1892. The University of
Essex opened in 1964 with 100 students.
Legend has it that the Romans grew grapes
on Mersea Island as it has gently sloping,
south-facing fields. The present Mersea Island
Vineyard was established in 1985.

The United Kingdom Rescue Organisation
(UKRO) is a fast moving dynamic
organisation that is determined to push
vehicle extrications to its professional
pinnacle, to drive the national agenda on
road death reduction and to showcase other
rescue disciplines including trauma, line
rescue and urban search and rescue.
Each year regional extrication challenges are
held, followed by an annual national extrication
challenge, which is being hosted by Essex
County Fire And Rescue Service in 2014.
Extrication teams from Fire and Rescue
Services train throughout the year to reach
an extremely high challenge standard. The
challenge events are very competitive and the
teams take them very seriously.
In addition to the vehicle extrication challenge,
there will be a rope rescue challenge, urban
search and rescue challenge and a water rescue
event. All of these will showcase the variety of
work carried out by Fire and Rescue Services
and serve to demonstrate that our highly trained
and skilled professionals respond to more than
just fires.

The University of Essex’s Colchester
Campus, set in attractive parkland, is
the venue for The UKRO Challenge 2014.
It’s an exciting time for the University, as
2014 marks 50 years since Essex opened
its doors to the first cohort of students.
Their first base was in the eighteenth
century Wivenhoe House, which is now
a four-star luxury country house hotel
on the Campus, but they soon moved
a few hundred metres onto the main
Campus. Over the decades the University
has developed into a dynamic academic
institution, renowned worldwide for its high
standards of teaching and research.
Facilities have improved to match the high
level of academic endeavour, new teaching
areas include the award-winning Ivor Crewe
Lecture Hall and the Sports Centre offers
the latest equipment and amenities as part
of our ongoing commitment to sporting
success.
Set just outside Colchester, Britain’s
oldest recorded town, the Campus offers
a diverse range of dining opportunities
for our guests all within a short walk of
the accommodation and the sites for the
Challenge activities.
There’s plenty of parking for people taking
part and for the many visitors we anticipate
for the public events.
We are anticipating high visitor numbers
as the public are invited to watch the
challenges and participate in a wide range
of activities around the site.
Fire and rescue services recognise the
importance of educating the public about
the dangers of fire, how to prevent fires
occurring and what to do in the event of
fire to keep themselves and their families
safe. The challenge event is a fantastic
opportunity to entertain the public and
engage with them through our Firefighters
and advocates providing community fire
safety advice. Essex County Fire And
Rescue Service are really enthusiastic about
the challenge event and showcasing to the
public how it strives to achieve its mission
of making Essex a safer place to live, work
and visit.
