Issue 34: October 2016 January 2017
Dear Friends of Essenwood Home,
Happy New Year! 2016 was a year of many changes and we embraced
them all. It was a successful year despite some challenges and we ended
the year with many parties and a lot of fun. This edition will recap some of
the highlights of the festive season.
We look forward to an even better 2017. All the best to you and your loved
ones!
Onward and upwards!
Grindrod Lighthouse Project
Essenwood hosted a number of staff volunteers from Grindrod Bank
for a special day of tea and crafts. The volunteers worked with
residents to make beautiful Christmas decorations. The volunteers
were part of the Grindrod Lighthouse Project which aims to be of
assistance to the Durban community.
Grindrod Bank also donated funds to Essenwood to purchase the
craft materials. We thank the staff of Grindrod Bank very much for
the wonderful day. Special thanks to Roxanne Kuppan for
championing this project at Essenwood.
Thank you RobinhoodFoundation!
We received a visit from volunteers from the Robinhood Foundation as
part of their annual BlessaGranny campaign. Residents were each
treated to a Christmas gift as well as a morning of tea and entertainment.
Directors' Christmas Lunch
This Christmas lunch provided the opportunity
for residents, volunteers and Directors to
spend time together. We appreciate the time
and energy which our volunteers and
Directors give to our home.
Festive Tea hostedby Shanley's
Shanley's is a regular supporter of
Essenwood. They hosted a Christmas
themed tea for the residents which was
most enjoyed by all.
High TeaA special High Tea was hosted by
Feedem. We provided plain cupcakes
and a variety of different icing sugars
and toppings to the residents so that
they could create their own
masterpieces.
It was a lovely (and tasty) afternoon.
Staff ChristmasLunch
Essenwood hosted a braai for all staff as a thank you for their
contribution throughout the year. All staff received a small gift as a
token of Essenwood's appreciation. Thank you to all who donated
towards the cost of this function. The staff appreciated the afternoon
very much.

Resident Changes
RenovationsWe will be proceeding with renovations in 2017 as funds become
available. Currently, we are in the final stages of completing the
kitchen renovations. We have also begun work upstairs to create
additional Assisted Living beds in Rutherford Wing.
Towards the end of 2016, we completed the renovations of the ground
floor Rutherford rooms. These are now occupied by frail residents. We
also created a new wash line area for residents to use and performed
extensive renovations to the passage way adjoining the kitchen and
Independent Living wing.
