Die üblichen Öffnungszeiten in St. Moritz sind

von 9 – 12.30 und 14 – 18.30 oder 19 Uhr. Am

Samstag schliessen die meisten Shops bereits

um 17 Uhr. Während der Saison bleiben viele

Läden über Mittag durchgehend und abends

länger geöffnet; manche Boutiquen auch Sonntags.

year 2014 is dedicated to pioneering spirit. 150 years ago the hotelier Johannes

Badrutt received the very first winter tourists in St. Moritz, who discovered the new

and white winter holidays. That is when St. Moritz became the first winter sport

destination. Even if some medias differ, for us the «top of the world» is still a

living myth that has been standing out from the main stream yesterday, today and

hopefully for the next 150 years to come.

My BACKYARD In seinem ersten Fotobuch zeigt der junge Fotograf Filip Zuan herausragende Freesport-Bilder aus dem

Engadin. Eishockeyspielen auf schwarzgefrorenen Seen, Fischen auf einem Stand Up Paddle, Klippen-

springen oder nächtliches Skate- und Snowboarden an den unmöglichsten Orten. Filip Zuan fotogra-

fiert seit Jahren Freesport aus einer ganz besonderen Perspektive. Und das Engadin – der eigentliche

Backyard des Fotografen – bietet eine unglaubliche Spielwiese für Freesports jeglicher Couleur. Bei den

Bildern geht es immer um den perfekten Moment, Spass und Respekt vor der beeindruckenden Engadi-

ner Natur. Als weiteres Novum wurde das Projekt zu grossen Teilen über Crowdfunding finanziert. «Die

ständige Suche nach Adrenalin, das Gefühl von Freiheit und das Abschalten nach einem hektischen

Arbeitstag sind der Kern und die treibenden Kräfte des Freesports. Und dieser ist heute dank unzäh-

ligen Möglichkeiten, neuen Sportarten und deren Kombination so spannend wie noch nie.» Filip Zuan

In his first photo book the young photographer Filip Zuan shows his excellent freesport pictures he shot in

the Engadine. Playing ice hockey on a frozen lake, fishing on a stand up paddle, cliff diving or skateboarding

and snowboarding by night in seemingly impossible places. For years Filip Zuan has been shooting the

freesport from a very special perspective. The Engadine, the photographer’s actual backyard, offers an

incredible playground for any kind of freesports. In Zuan’s pictures it’s always about the perfect moment,

fun and respect of the impressive Engadine nature. Another novelty is that the project was crowdfunded.

«The constant search for adrenaline, the feeling of freedom and just unwinding after a busy day of work

are the essence and the force of freesports. Freesports have never been as exciting because of the

countless possibilities, the new sports and their combination.» Filip Zuan knows what he is talking

about, because he has been practicing freesports for a long time. This fascination led this Engadine

local to capture his universe on camera. Nobody ever captured the Engadine on photographs in this way.

The pictures grant a «look behind the scene» this way on and show how locals move in their own valley

and how they interpret freesports.

Fashion lovers are at the right place in St. Moritz. For example in the glitte-

ring and sparkling boutiques of the village center in the Via Serlas, where

Selina Gasparin ist in Pontresina aufgewachsen und hat die Academia Engiadina in Samedan besucht.

Sie studierte während 3.5 Jahren Sport- & Bewegungswissenschaft in Norwegen. Heute wohnt sie in

S-chanf und arbeitet als Grenzwächterin beim mobilen Posten in Samedan – zudem ist sie leiden-

schaftliche Biathletin.

Wie sieht normalerweise Ihr Tagesablauf aus?

Es gibt zwei Möglichkeiten: entweder ich arbeite

uniformiert als Grenzwächterin oder ich trai-

niere als Biathletin. So oder so bewaffnet – aber

auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise. Mein Sportall-

tag besteht aus zwei physischen Einheiten, zum

Beispiel Rollskilaufen und Krafttraining und einer

Schiesseinheit.

Ich mag das Mittagsmenü für CHF 15.- im Restau-

Bergbahnen und einfache Wanderungen. Die

GLETSCHER FONDUEThis fondue is called glacier fondue because it’s elaborated at the Alp Nova that is located next to the Morteratsch glacier. The Sennerei’s fondue cheese mix is made of high-class Swiss raw milk and contains no additives or molten salts. This is why it always tastes homemade. The constant movement of water, sand and sun create the bizarre and unique shapes of the driftwood. A fascinating and inspiring material of which artist Jeff Lleshi creates tables, aesthetic lamps, candleholders, light objects and mirrors. The artist has been living in the Engadine for almost a decade. He looks for his materials in the nature and finds the driftwood near the Inn river and the olive wood in Corfu in Greece, where he was born. His objects are unique and confer harmony, charisma and that certain something for any kind of space. In collaboration with the NZZ publishing house, St. Moritz launched an anniversary book named WINTER PARADISE as a tribute to 150 years of winter tourism. Wie sieht normalerweise Ihr Tagesablauf aus?Unsere Kinder müssen früh raus und somit auch wir. Dreimal pro Woche gehe ich morgens eine Stunde Joggen oder laufe zügig auf die Alp Lan-guard. Den Rest der Zeit verbringe ich zwischen Büro, Terminen und meiner Familie. Mit dabei ist immer mein Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Wo gehen Sie im Engadin auswärts essen? Und was darf ’s kosten?Kosten darf es je nach Lust und Laune von wenig bis viel. Immer ein sehr guter Tipp ist der Velt-linerkeller in St. Moritz. Manchmal essen wir im Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina. Das in der Halle à la minute zubereitete Tartar ist ein Hochgenuss. Den besten Döner gibt es bei der Eishalle Ludains.

Apéro-Time. Wo lernt man schnell neue Leute kennen?Mich trifft man in Gianottis Weinbar oder in der Pitschna Scena in Pontresina bei einem Glas Prosecco. Leute zum Kennenlernen sind dort immer viele. Gerne gehe ich auch in die Bar eines schönen Engadiner 5-Sterne-Hotels und geniesse die Hotelstimmung und das «people watching».

Leute zu unterhalten ist seine Leidenschaft – vor allem, wenn seine Arbeit zum Nachdenken anregt und ein positives Gefühl vermittelt. St. Moritz und Hollywood sind für ihn die beiden schönsten Plätze der Welt.

Wie sieht normalerweise Ihr Tagesablauf aus?Mein Tag startet um 5.30 Uhr mit meinem Schau-spiel- und Stimmtraining. Danach gehe ich jog-gen und ins Fitnessstudio. Nach dem Frühstück bereite ich mich auf die bevorstehenden Ter-mine vor. An Drehtagen bin ich bereits vor 6 Uhr am Set. Abends erhole ich mich Zuhause oder bei einem gemütlichen Spaziergang.

Wo gehen Sie im Engadin auswärts essen? Kulinarisch bietet St. Moritz einfach alles: Und ich liebe gutes Essen (z.B. Hotel Hauser, Hotel Steffani, Pizzeria Arte). Ausserhalb von St. Mo-ritz gehe ich am liebsten ins Hotel Castell oder ins Restaurant Dorta in Zuoz. Das Giardino Mountain in Champfèr ist sehr gemütlich und besitzt eine tolle Hotelbar. Bei besonderen An-lässen empfehle ich das Palace Hotel, wo man königlich dinieren kann.

Apéro-Time. Wo lernt man schnell neue Leute kennen?Im Posthaus oder im Pavarotti: Beide Bars liegen im Zentrum, und man trifft die verschiedensten Leute an. Das Ambiente ist ungezwungen und gemütlich aber elegant.

Ein Tag König des Engadins: Was machen Sie?Ich wäre an der frischen Bergluft, auf der Ski-piste, zum Mittagessen bei Mathis Food Affairs, als Zuschauer beim Cresta Bob Run, zu einem Tee im Palace und zum Feiern im Kings Club.

Das ist ein absolutes «Muss» für alle, die das Engadin besuchen ...Eine Kutschenfahrt ins Val Roseg: Eingehüllt in dicke Felle kann man die Winterlandschaft und die umliegenden Gletscher bewundern – die Natur sieht aus wie im Märchenbuch. Für mich gehört das zu den drei romantischsten Dingen, die man auf der Welt tun kann.

Ihr Lieblingsplatz zum Abschalten?Der St. Moritzer See ... oder im Schwimmbad vom Palace Hotel. Auch bei einem Spaziergang entlang des Cresta Runs kann ich mich bestens erholen. Und: beim Schlittschuhlaufen auf dem Silvaplaner See.

Hinter der imposanten Fassade befindet sich auch ein echter Engadiner Klassiker: die Arvenstube des Waldhaus Sils! Vor kurzem erneuert unter dem Leitmotiv «Zurück zu alten Traditionen aber für unsere Zeit interpretiert», erlebt der Gast hier höchste Kellner-Handwerkskunst beim Anrichten, Tranchieren und Filetieren. No wonder this building is quite a monument with its long family tradition, the location, the five stars, over 200 beds and dozens of employees. Behind the im-posing facade a true Engadine classic is to be found, the famous pine wood parlor of the Waldhaus! The idea of the recently redesigned parlor was: Back to the old traditions, reinterpreting them for our times. Here guests can experience the savoir-faire of the waiters. And not to mention the chef! Kurt Röösli, who has been the chef cook of the hotel for several years, has a keen sense for exquisiteness and focuses on origin and quality when it comes to good and local products. Nevertheless the Waldhaus has to be discovered in order to reveal its intensity, like for example during the daily tea concert in the great parlor, at the dance at the bar, at the smoker’s lounge or during one of many cultural events. Come as you are is the hotel’s motto because after all that’s what the Waldhaus is, quite unconventional.

Wo gehen Sie im Engadin auswärts essen? Und was darf’s kosten?Ich liebe die Abwechslung. Zum Beispiel im Fischrestaurant Murtaröl, dem Thailando in Silva-plana, dem Bellavista in Surlej, dem Nira Alpina in Surlej, dem Donatz in Samedan und der Stüva Bella in Pontresina. Auch etwas Einfacheres wie Pizzerias oder die Pitschna Scena in Pontresina besuche ich gerne mal.

Apéro-Time. Wo lernt man schnell neue Leute kennen?Leider ist während der Apérozeit meine strengste Arbeitszeit, so dass man mich selten bis nie im Apéro antrifft. Aber ich liebe die schönen, alten und stilvollen Bars in den 5-Sterne-Häusern.

Ein Tag König des Engadins: Was machen Sie?Ich würde die Skiverbindung St. Moritz-Bad – Cor-vatsch sofort bewilligen und im Allgemeinen sämt-liche touristische Projekte mit Volldampf voran- treiben.

Das ist ein absolutes «Muss» für alle, die das Engadin besuchen ...Raus aus den Hotels und Dörfern, hoch auf die Berge und ab an die frische Luft. Das Engadin nicht aus der «Cüpli-Sicht» sondern in seiner ge-samten Naturschönheit betrachten.

Ihr Lieblingsplatz zum Abschalten?Spaziergang mit Frau und Hund von Surlej nach Lej Zuppo – Palüd lungia – Crap Alv und wieder zurück nach Surlej, insgesamt etwa eine Stunde.

Der Tag auf der Piste war lang, die Muskeln brennen, der Körper verlangt nach Ruhe, der Geist nach Inspiration. Und die bekommt man im Engadin in weitläufigen Spa-Welten aus der westlichen und östlichen Hemi- sphäre, bei Spitzen-Friseuren und in besonderen Wohlfühl-Oasen. Der Schauplatz dazu könnte nicht treffender sein: St. Moritz verdankt seine Bedeutung nämlich ursprünglich seinen Heilquellen, die seit fast 3'500 Jahren bekannt sind. Wegen den eisenhaltigen Mineralquellen besuchten Kurgäste schon vor fast 3'500 Jahren St. Moritz. Später zählte die Quellkirche des Heiligen Mauritius zu den beliebtesten Wallfahrtsorten Europas. 1519 versprach Papst Leo X sogar jedem die völlige Absolution, der zur Quellkirche des heiligen Mauritius pilgerte. Übrigens: 2014 eröffnet das neue monumentale Hallenbad St. Moritz mit verschiedenen Becken, Pools und Wellnessangeboten.

Sometimes the days on the slopes are long, the muscles are burning, the body craves relaxation and the spirit longs for inspiration. There is nothing the Engadine’s spacious spas, blending eastern and western traditions, high-class hairdressers and extraordinary wellness oases cannot fix. The scenery could not have been chosen better: St. Moritz partly owes its reputation to its curative source of hot springs that have been known since nearly 3,500 years. Already at that time guests used to visit St. Moritz because of its iron rich mineral curative springs. Later, St. Maurice’s chapel and its springs became one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations of Europe. In 1519, Pope Leo X even offered complete absolution to anyone who had visited them. By the way, the new indoor swimming pool in St. Moritz, with several pools and wellness areas, will be inaugurated in 2014.

Ein reichhaltiges Frühstück ist essentiell für mich. Über Mittag trai-niere ich 2 - 4 Stunden für mich und gegen Abend sind die Kunden wieder an der Reihe. Danach ent-spanne ich oft in der Sauna, treffe Freunde und koche ein gesundes Nachtessen.

Wo gehen Sie im Engadin auswärts essen? Und was darf’s kosten?Mein zweites Wohnzimmer ist die Pizzeria Lau-dinella bei Mohammed. Die Pizzas sind sensa-tionell lecker, ich liebe italienisches Essen. Zudem lasse ich mich auch gerne kulinarisch in der Chesa Salis in Bever verwöhnen; nebenbei sind dort auch immer Ausstellungen von Künstlern, die mich inspirieren.

Even though St. Moritz is surrounded by pristine nature, it has the unmistakable flair of a cosmopolitan jet set metropolis. Sometimes one almost wishes for stormy and snowy days to visit the galleries and museums that are too good to be ignored. The downside of many sunny days is that one might have to «sacrifice» one of them in order to not miss out on the latest exhibits. But it’s worth it. Famous artists like Giovanni Segantini have been inspired by the Engadine and less known artists also have excelled here. Ihre Ausbildung hat Nathalie Grenier an der Pariser Kunstgewerbeschule mit Schwerpunkt auf Malerei absolviert und bereits nach kurzer Zeit an Ausstellungen teilgenommen. So wurde 1995 die Galerie Baudoin Lebon in Paris auf sie aufmerksam. Die Natur in ihren vielfältigen Ausdrucksformen, immer mal wieder kombiniert mit Personen, prägt bis heute ihre Themen. Nathalie Grenier stellt nun neue Bilder – entstan-den während des Jahres 2013 – zum ersten Mal in der Galerie Peter Vann aus: Mit Bildern in Öl auf Leinwand sowie China-Tusche-Zeichnungen setzt sie sich mit dem Landschaftsthema Enga-din auseinander. Natürlich zeigt sie die schnee- bedeckten Berge und selbstverständlich tum- meln sich darauf mitunter auch Skifahrer ... aber Grenier lässt sich dabei von einer sehr spezi-ellen atmosphärischen Impression leiten und er-möglicht so eigentlich klassischen Szenen einen neuen, modernen Zugang. This is how the Galerie Boudoir Lebon in Paris discovered her. The nature and its many forms of expression, sometimes even combined with persons, still characterize her paintings. Now, Natahlie Grenier exhibits the new paintings she created in 2013 in Peter Vann’s gallery. The visitors can admire oil paintings and drawings made with china ink in which the artist expresses her impressions of the Enga-dine landscape. Of course her paintings and drawings also show snow-covered mountains with people skiing. Nevertheless Grenier also portrays the valley’s unique ambiance and re-interprets classic scenes in a new and more modern way. Peter Vann’s gallery invites visitors to embark on a special and modern explo-ration journey through the Engadine.

Auch wenn uns die Bilder der meisten Geschöpfe auf den Bauernhöfen der Umgebung bekannt vorkommen – durch Peter Vanns fotografische Interpretation erhalten diese schwarz-weissen Tier-Porträts einen Zauber zeitloser Schönheit. Das Tier wird zur Persönlichkeit, und da spielen natürlich auch Namen eine Rolle: das Schaf Anna, das Mini-Schwein Louise, die Kuh Halleluja, die Henne Josephine ... Photographs of the BESTIARIUM exhibit stand out in Peter Vann’s new calendar. Even though we seem to know the creatures of the nearby farms on Peter Vann’s pictures, his lens confers the black and white animal portraits a new magical and timeless beauty. The animals are granted a personality and that’s why the name becomes increasingly important. For instance there is Anna, the sheep; Louise, the mini pig; Hallelujah, the cow or Josephine, the hen... Eine überlieferte Geschichte sagt, dass 1864 die Winterferien dank einer Wette des St. Moritz- er Hoteliers Johannes Badrutt geboren worden sind. St. Moritz – als Geburtsstätte des Winter-tourismus – wird deshalb bei «150 Jahre Winter- tourismus in der Schweiz» eine bedeutende Rolle spielen. Das lokale Organisationskomitee plant ein umfangreiches Festivitätenprogramm.

This winter (2014/2015) St. Moritz, the Engadine and Switzerland celebrate 150 years of winter tourism. According to a story that has been told, the winter holidays in 1864 were the result of a bet Johannes Badrutt, a notorious hotelier from St. Moritz, had made. That is one of the reasons why St. Moritz, the birthplace of winter tourism, will play a key role during the «150 years of winter tourism in Switzerland» celebration. The local organization committee is planning a great program full of festivities.

ZUFFELLATO In seinem Zernezer Atelier läutet der Engadiner Künstler eine neue Schaffensperiode ein. Marco Zuf-fellato arbeitet mit organischen Elementen wie Schwemmholz, Schädeln, Federn oder Rosshaar, aber auch mit rohem Metall und scheinbar sinnlosen Fundgegenständen. Daraus zaubert er mit intuitiver Schöpfungskraft Skulpturen und Objekte von archaischer Schönheit. Gestalten zwischen Licht und Schatten, Leben und Tod. Neben funktionellen und massiven Objekten lässt er seit einiger Zeit auch wieder seine «Totemmännli» aufleben – dekorative kleinere Figuren aus Holz. Seine Werke versprühen eine ganz eigene Ästhetik und entwickeln dabei beinahe mystische Energie – ähnlich den Kultobjekten primitiver Stämme. Das Atelier mit Showroom liegt mitten in Zernez, direkt an der Abzweigung zum Ofenpass.

The relocation of his studio in Zernez heralds a new creative period for the Engadine artist. Marco Zuffellato works with organic elements such as driftwood, skulls, feathers, horsehair, metal and found items. With his intuitive creativity he transforms them into sculptures and objects of an appealing archaic beauty and creatures that come from somewhere between life and death come to life. Besides his functional and massive sculptures, he has been reviving his «totem pole figures» representing small decorative wooden creations. His art emanates a unique aesthetic quality and is not far from transforming into a mystic energy, just like some cult objects of indigenous tribes. The studio and showroom are located in Zernez, at the junction of the Ofen Pass.

BARS & nightlife

Tagsüber bieten herrliche Sonnenterrassen auf dem Berg die Ergänzung zu Action und Unterhaltung im Engadiner Winter. Für den Apéro vor dem Abendessen empfehlen sich in St. Moritz die Bar Verde, Pava & friends oder etwa Hausers Roo Bar. Der King’s Club im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel ist die Mutter aller St. Moritzer Discotheken, gefolgt vom legendären Dracula Club. «Very nice» ist auch die Sunny Bar im Kulm Hotel. Seit Jahrzehnten ist sie Treffpunkt der tollkühnen Piloten des Cresta Runs. Und sonst wäre da beispielsweise die grösste Whiskey-Bar der Welt im Hotel Waldhaus am See, die kultige Indoor-Barmeile im Hotel Schweizerhof, das Casino St. Moritz, die Clubs Vivai oder Diamond. Und natürlich gehen auch die anderen Ferien- orte rund um St. Moritz beim Eindunkeln noch nicht zu Bett. Besonders erwähnenswert: die Rote Bar im Hotel Castell in Zuoz, die Pitschna Scena in Pontresina oder die Bodega im Hotel Misani in Celerina.

During the day, the wonderful sunny mountain terraces complete the activity and entertainment of the Engadine winter perfectly. For those who want to go for a quick drink in St. Moritz before dinner, the «Bar Verde», the «Pava & friends» or Hauser’s «Roo Bar» are highly recommended. The «King’s Club» in the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is one of the first discotheques in St. Moritz and is followed by the legendary «Dracula Club». The «Sunny Bar» in the Kulm Hotel is also a very pleasant place to be and has been a meeting place of the daredevil «Cresta Run» athletes for decades. In dieser Wintersaison dürfen sich die Gäste auf Motto-Partys wie «Pirates of the Caribbean», «Elven Forest» und «Angels & Demons» freuen.

Dominik Brülisauer ist ein leicht neurotischer Pontresiner mit ausgeprägtem Narzissmus und Gel-tungsdrang. Er arbeitet als Werbetexter in Zürich. Nebenbei schreibt er Bücher, in denen er – gemäss eigenen Worten – «Menschen Lebensberatung in Dingen gibt, von denen er gar keine Ahnung hat»

Wie sieht normalerweise Ihr Tagesablauf aus?Dieser ist peinlich genau choreografiert. Drei Mal den Wecker ausschalten, aufstehen, arbei-ten, über Mittag eine Stunde schwimmen, arbei-ten, ein Bier mit Freunden und danach lesen bis zum Einschlafen. Jegliche Abweichungen von diesem Korsett bereiten mir ein schlechtes Gewissen.

Wo gehen Sie im Engadin auswärts essen?Sehr empfehlenswert ist die Pizzeria vom Enga-dinerhof in Pontresina. Neben gutem Essen und fairen Preisen geniesse ich dort auch die Sprüche von Gastgeber Thomas. Der darf mich selbst in breitestem Hochdeutsch in meinem eigenen Dorf als «Zürcher» willkommen heissen.

Apéro-Time. Wo lernt man schnell neue Leute kennen?Auf der Alpina Hütte den Gästen die Bergwelt er-klären, das kommt immer gut an. Ob es den Piz Tartüffel, die Cresta da Cugliuns oder den Munt da las Buslas tatsächlich gibt, das interessiert in solchen Momenten ohnehin die wenigsten. Später geht’s zum Egon ins Pöstli Pontresina.

Ein Tag König des Engadins: Was machen Sie?Ich würde einen Numerus Clausus für Einheimi-sche und Gäste einführen. Das Tal muss seinen Stil und seine Extravaganz bewahren. Jährlich gibt es Tests, die bestanden werden müssen. Wer kein Chalandamarz-Lied auswendig kann, hat schon mal schlechte Karten.

Das ist ein absolutes «Muss» für alle, die das Engadin besuchen ...Ein Gleitschirmflug bei Vollmond vom Corvatsch, eine Snowboardabfahrt im Sonnenuntergang, Rö-sti auf der Boval Hütte, im Sommer an einem Berg-see übernachten, die Schokolade vom Gianottis, Klettern oberhalb von Plaun da Lej und Respekt gegenüber Mensch und Natur.

Ihr Lieblingsplatz zum Abschalten?Das ist auf dem Mountainbike. In meinem Buch «Schallwellenreiter. Dank Musik besser durch den Alltag» beschreibe ich es genauer. Man braucht ei-nen magischen Engadinerherbst, einen einsamen Weg, stahlblauen Himmel und Johann Sebastian Bach auf dem iPod.
