Dear reader and catalogue user,

The Catalogue of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Forest Fruits and Mushrooms was prepared for you by BiH Foreign Trade Chamber (FTC) in cooperation with USAID/Sida FARMA project.

BiH Foreign Trade Chamber is the association of entrepreneurs from all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of its activities is the representation of its members to potential partners abroad including providing services of strategic promotion in foreign markets.

Companies involved in the production, collection and processing of medicinal and aromatic plants, forest fruits and mushrooms are active within the FTC Association of Agriculture and Food Processing Industries. A preponderance of these companies are export oriented.

The volume of exports of medicinal and aromatic plants, forest fruits and mushrooms from Bosnia and Herzegovina is greater than for other countries of the region and is growing. These FTC associated companies are dynamic, growing, and interested in expanding their international business linkages.

The Catalogue of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Forest Fruits and Mushrooms will enable potential business partners to find information about companies that are well established as well as for companies that are new to exports. It is our hope that this catalogue will promote your interest for developing a cooperation with BH entrepreneurs.

About the USAID/Sida FARMA Project

Since 2009 the United States Agency for

International Development (USAID) and Swedish

Development Agency (Sida) have been partners

in a four-year Program of Fostering Agricultural

Markets Activity (FARMA).

The goal of the project is rapid, sustainable

and broad-based economic growth through

demand-driven interventions aimed at improving

the competitiveness of BiH agricultural producers

and agribusiness enterprises. The purpose

of the Project is to expand environmentally

sustainable production, processing and sales of

value-added agricultural products.

USAID/Sida FARMA recognizes the potential

of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs)

sector, as a sector that greatly contributes to the

development of the local and national economy

of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

Even today, despite the existance of advanced

agricultural systems, the collection of MAPs is

a significant economic activity in rural areas of

BiH.

It is believed that in Bosnia and Herzegovina

there are over 700 varieties of MAPs, out

of which 200 are harvested for commercial

purposes. The sector includes more than

50 companies operating in the business of

production and processing of MAPs, forest

fruits and mushrooms. Between 1,500 and

9,000 tons of different MAPs, forest fruits and

mushrooms are collected annually, which are

mainly dried or distilled for export. With USAID/

Sida FARMA’s assistance the production of final

products for export is increasing. Medicinal and

aromatic plants, forest fruits and mushrooms

are among the few BiH agricultural products that

have a positive trade balance.

As an alternative to the wild collection, USAID/

Sida FARMA supports a growing interest in the

cultivation rather than wild collection of MAPs.

This is the result of the demand of the MAPs

based processing industry, and the need for a

larger and more steady supply of high quality

raw materials. An additional benefit is that the

controlled cultivation of MAPs reduces the

unsustainable collection of wild plants which

might otherwise become endangered. For that

reason, the USAID/Sida FARMA project has

organized a number of activities to promote the

cultivation of MAPs.

The USAID/Sida FARMA project supports

processors to advance their production

processes and technologies, in order to

become competitive in the domestic and

international markets. The project’s support for

producing this catalogue is to help interested

buyers identify potential BiH business partners

in the MAP sector.

Bosnia & Herzegovina

Page 8: Essential Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina has long tradition as well as experienced and skilled workforce in

collecting and cultivating medicinal and aromatic herbs, wild berries and mushrooms. The

biodiversity of medicinal and aromatic plants and mushrooms in the area of Bosnia and

Herzegovina is very rich, thanks to the favourable geographic position, climate and varying

geological and pedological conditions, vast surfaces of pastures, medical flora and different

kind of forests, lakes and rivers.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina medicinal and aromatic plants have the potential to substantially

contribute to the national and local economy. Bosnia and Herzegovina has over 700 species

of medicinal and aromatic plants out of which around 200 are exploited. Diversity of climate

and vegetation, clean environment and tradition are good preconditions for the production of

high quality raw materials, essential oils and different herbal products.

Given the diverse climate and topography of the country, there are ideal conditions for the

production of chamomile, mint, balm, lavender, immortelle, sage etc.

BH MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANTS

Page 9: Essential Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is equidistant from the Equator and the Pole, thus the climate is not

dominated by a single type of weather. It can be divided into three climatic regions with more

or less sharp boundaries or moderate transition zones:

• Northern region

• Hilly mountain region

• Southern region

The climate is predominantly moderate continental, particularly characteristic for Central

Bosnia and Herzegovina, while northern part of the country has predominantly continental

climate. South of the country has Sub-Mediterranean climate, characterized by long summers

and short, mild winters, with more than 200 sunny days and 1400 l/m2 of precipitation per

year.

Sufficient amounts of water, surface available for agricultural activities and a large number of

sunny days a year make the southern part of BH an ideal place for growth and cultivation of

mediterranean plants.

Mountainous and continental climate dominates the central and northern part of BH. This

offers ideal conditions for the growth of forest fruits, mushrooms and different medicinal and

aromatic herbs. On the north of the country there is a typical continental climate.
