The name of my constellation is the Aquarius constellation. I’ve chosen to write about it because it is also my Western Zodiac sign (it also reflects part of my Chinese Zodiac in which I am a water elemental). It is located in the southern hemisphere. In Latin, its name means “water-bearer” or “cup-bearer”. Its symbol is , which represents water. It lies in a region of the sky sometimes called the Sea; this is due to is possession of many constellations all with names related to water such as Pisces (the fish), Eridanus (the river), and Cetus (the whale). Like the other zodiac constellations, Ptolemy catalogued Aquarius in the 2 nd century. There are many different variations of the myth behind the constellation. The main one is of Greek mythology. It follows the life of a young prince named Ganymede who was supposedly the most beautiful young man in Troy. One day, Ganymede was tending to his father’s sheep on Mount Ida when Zeus took notice of him. Back in ancient Greece, it was not abnormal for an older male to take a younger one (ages usually ranged from 12 to 19) as a romantic partner. Traditionally, the former would act as a mentor for the latter. In Ganymede’s case, he was approximately 15 years of age when Zeus first saw him. For the god, it was love (it was more of lust) at first sight and he found himself irresistible to the prince’s beauty; thus, he decided that Ganymede was to belong to him and only him. Zeus transfigured himself into an eagle, swooped down from Mount Olympus to Mount Ida, and carried off the prince to be his lover and servant. He decides that Ganymede would now be his personal cup-bearer, burdened with the task of bringing him drinks whenever he wished so.
