Zoonosis is a disease that can be transmitted to humans from animals or opposite.

Transmission occurs when an animal infected with bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi

comes into contact with humans (Chow, 2015). Zoonosis classified to ‘Emerging zoonoses’

and ‘re-emerging zoonoses’ are make disadvantage to human or animals.

There is the example from zoonosis in Indonesia : rabies, anthrax, avian influenza,

salmonellosis and brucellosis. The other case of important zoonosis are schistosomiasis,

cysticercosis atau taeniasis, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, Japanese encephalitis,

streptococosis atau staphylococosis, and clostridium (Naipospos, 2005). Base on the news,

veterinary medicine dari berita tersebut sebagai seorang dokter hewan perlu memberikan

tenaganya dalam menangani kasus zoonosis seperti disebutkan di atas, berikut ini pencegahan

yang dapat dilakukan untuk mencengah penyakit zoonosis yaitu : Wash your hands often

when touching, playing with or caring for pets. Never handle the stool of any animal without

wearing disposable gloves or using a plastic barrier. Avoid kissing your pet or letting your pet

lick your face. Do daily “tick checks” on yourself, your kids and your pet. If you find a tick,

use tweezers to slowly pull it out. After removing the tick, immerse it in rubbing alcohol.

Wash the tick bite wound and your hands with soap and water. If you are pregnant, ask

someone else in the family to clean the cat’s litter box. If you must do it yourself, wear gloves

and immediately wash your hands after changing the litter. Wash your hands after gardening

or working in soil where pets may have relieved themselves. If you are scratched or bitten,

wash the area with soap and water right away and administer first aid. If you are concerned,

contact your healthcare professional. Make sure your pet is protected against disease threats

in your area. Bring your pet to the veterinarian for a wellness exam at least twice a year, so

problems can be detected or pprevented. And Talk to your veterinarian and visit

Sekarang ini dikenal istilah Public Health untuk menangani kasus zoonosis tersebut,

menurut Winslow (1920) Public Health is the science and art of preventing

disease,prolonging life,and promoting health and efficiency through organized community

effort for  the sanitation of the environment,the control of communicable infections,

the  education of the individual in personal hygiene, the organization of medical and nursing

service for early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease, and development of  social

machinery to ensure for every individual a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of

health, so organizing these benefit as to enable every citizen to realize his birthright of health

and longevity”.

Dari penjelasan tersebut dapat dihubungkan bahwa untuk mencegah dan menangani

penyakit zoonosis diperlukan study pustaka melalui konsep Public Health yang menjelaskan

bahwa dokter hewan memiliki peranan terhadap penyakit zoonosis tersebut.
