Chapter 3 (Part 1) One Page EssayIn the first part of Chapter 3, I have learned about PESTEL framework. They refer to the external forces surrounding a firm that may impact strategy for a given firm. It is the most overarching analysis and gives the broadest view of the market. One of the most important takeaways from class is that PESTEL is a framework, not a model. That means it scans, monitors, and evaluates the external factors that may impact a firm. It does not give clear questions and answers to the problems that a firm may face, but rather only analyzes the external forces.Within PESTEL analysis, I find Ecological the most intriguing factor of them all. During the Industrial Revolution in the 1820s, Ecological would not come up as a strong external factor. People were focused on maximizing personal wealth through factories and dumping waste at the lowest cost. Ecological concerns were, at best, minimal. US is not the only country to endure such a phenomenon. The Great Smog of 1952 in Britain and modern France and China are all examples of ignoring ecological factors. This leads me to think that PESTEL analysis is most likely to change in the near future with new technologies creating gray areas in our lives, such as privacy and security. One part that I do not fully understand is the disconnection between Political and Legal factors. In my opinion, Political and Legal factors are so much intertwined that they can be considered as one factor. For example, Keystone is a very political issue at the moment. Whatever the decision is, the end result is the legal factor when something gets signed to allow or disallow the pipeline. In conclusion, PESTEL analysis is merely an overview of the external forces that a firm may face. For more in depth analysis, we need to look at the Five Forces model and strategic groups.
