The EM Series of VibratingWire Strain Gauges are de-signed for concrete embed-ment in order to measurestrains caused by stressvariations. The stress canalso be evaluated when theconcrete's modulus of elas-ticity is known, followingcompensation for tempera-ture, creeping and concretereaction effects. The EM isembedded in structuressuch as:
Dams
Nuclear power plants
Bridges and overpasses
Tall buildings
Tunnels
Harbours
Foundations, walls, lin-
ings, footings, and piles
The EM is composed of two endpieces joined by a tube that pro-tects a length of steel wire. Thewire is sealed in the tube by aset of O rings on each endpiece. Both end pieces have a
flat circular flange to allow trans-fer of concrete deformation tothe wire. An electromagnet is fit-ting at the centre of the gauge.Strain developing in the con-crete modifies the tension in thewire and its resonant frequency, which is read by the electromag-net.
The EM-5 is the standard modeland is used in different types ofstructures as mentioned above.
The EM-l0 consists of a ruggedversion to be embedded in con-crete with coarse aggregates.
The shorter EM-2 model is de-signed for laboratory use or forlimited spaces.
Unless specified otherwise, thegauge tension is factory-adjusted at mid-range.
The gauge is very compliant. Itdoes not induce stresses in the
host media and can therefore be
embedded in young curing con-crete as well as in hard, syn-thetic materials such as resins, fibreglass and urethane.
A thermistor incorporated intothe EEM supplies informationon the effects of temperature
on the materials.

There are several ways toinstall the gauge: Attaching it to a rebar with
tie wire Inserting it directly into wet
concrete or grout
Pre-casting it in briquettewith the same mix for sub-sequent embedment
A mounting rosette that al-lows gauges to be preciselyoriented is offered as an ac-cessory. Also offered is a"no-stress" strain gauge thatconsists of a compressiblecylinder filled with the con-crete mix from the mass be-ing poured.
This unit, containing an EM,is placed adjacent to thegauge installation and isused as a reference to meas-ure any internal variation ofstrain in the concrete due toageing, temperature, humid-ity and factors independent ofexternal loads.
