0. SummaryIn this project, we are required to do an environmental-community service for the benefit of the public. Though the concept of environmental-commuinity service is not very new its has eveloped in the past few years. We took the community service as our commitment to the society and relate the community service with the

Page 4: Esd report.doc

environment. The process of doing the environment community service process is beneficial both for us and the society.

We have chosen an Old Folks Home in Kajang, Rumah Caring Kajang as the commuinity. After the first visit to the home, we analysed the problem faced by the home and came out with the solution after discussing with our tutor. At the end of the day, we have done the mosquitoes netting, artwork on recycled pallet, signage and landscaping for them.

We have get a sponsorship from Selangor Property Sdn. Bhd and SK One Stop Home Centre Sdn. Bhd has given 20% of discount on the materials that we bought when they realized we are doing an environment-community service. Besides that, we have the fully supports from the community, Rumah Caring Kajang Old Folks Home and our lecturers and tutor during the process of doing this assignment.

The objectives of the environment community service that we have done are as follows:

➢ to increse the awareness of current environmental issues locally➢ to induce creativity in attemping to explore the current environmental

circumstances➢ to allow us to explore the opportunity to work with the community and for the

community➢ to create awareness of the importance of creating and environmentally

sustainable product, design and services➢ to be able to understand and the explain the principles of sustainability from

environmental and social perspectiveLearning outcome of doing the environment community service are as follows:

➢ understand the concept of environmental and ecological sustainability➢ complete documentation of the entire assignment with Life Cycle Assessment➢ demonstrate problem-solving skills➢ recognise the roles and responsibilties of an architect towards the

environment and society➢ exaemplify creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental

circumstances

1. IntroductionThe organization we were engage with is Rumah Caring Kajang located at Lot1202/M Taman Cahaya Sungai Chua, 43000 Kajang, Selangor. Occupying a single storey houses in a neighbourhood just beside A Wet Thai Garden which they just moved in this year during early april. It is a non-profit organization looking into

Page 5: Esd report.doc

the welfare of mainly old folks and even down syndrome. Currently they are running this house taking care of 22 inmates ranging from age 21 years to 95 years old.

Before they moved in to the new home in Taman Cahaya, Rumah Caring Kajang first home is two double storey houses located at Taman Muhibah taking care of old folks, single parent, orphans, down syndrome, disabled and drug rebab. They have been served eviction notices by the authority and after numerous appeals, the final notices was to move out by the end of 2015. They have been offered a piece of land at a discounted price and now they are building a new home. During that period, Rumah Caring Kajang were given a 6 year contract temporary home for the inmates to stay in and theres the place we are now helping out at Taman Cahaya.

The organization was founded by Miss Wendy Yap in the year 2004 catering 50 inmates ranging from age 50 year to 95 years old inclusive of care givers. Exception intake for inmates below 50 years old will only be considered under certain criteria in terms of health and needs. Since this organization is a non-profit organization, they are mainly supported by contribution from the public to sustain the homes and meet the needs of old folks home with better nursing, health and logistic care. They also provide them a loving and caring environment and to uphold them with moral and spiritual support. Every weekends, the organization would bring the old folks for some outings outside.

Other than that, the organization also look into the welfare and needs of single mothers with children and young unmarried mother. The organization also help them emotionally and spiritually by counseling as many often tries to attempt suicide. They also help to raise funds through various activities to subsidized their monthly expenses. In addition, the organization would organize trips or outing for them and their children time to time.

3. Project ProposalRumah Caring Kajang is a non- profit organisation. It is not very well facilitated as the organisation newly moved to a new place and does not have extra fund to build up or all facilities in the home. This causes an uncomfortable state and environment of it.

Page 6: Esd report.doc

For example, the environment of the house are not covered by many trees and this causes a very bad ventilation and hot in at the area.

We have chosen the Old Folks House to be our organisation for this community projects as most of the senior citizens have been abandoned by the society. Volunteers nowadays are more focusing on helping the orphanage, property or the disable rather than them. This is because society are more focusing on youth. This is why we think that we have to do something for them.

To give them a better and liveable environment, we decided our main focus is the empty front yard. The front yard is potentially for planting plants and landscaping design. According to our observation, the community did not have any shading in the front yard. Beside doing plantation on the yard, we also discovered a abandoned cylinder concrete. After a brainstorming, the cylinder concrete are potentially for create a DIY bench. As a next generation, we are responsible to make our environment more sustain and liveable. So, we will visit the home twice a month or once a week to checking the the plantation and landscaping remain a good condition.

Beside landscaping, we also will provide Signboard, cabinet for storage, shoes racks, mural arts, bench and lighting by using the recycled materials and recyclable materials. The estimated cost the budget for this project is RM500-800. We are trying to get sponsorship from Selangor Properties Sdn. Bhd. to cover the materials that could use by the recycled materials.

4. Needs/ProblemsAfter we visiting the Rumah Caring Kajang, we found that the old folks home is lack of facilities. The infrastucture also worn and old. There are also dont have sign board

Page 7: Esd report.doc

and poor external appearance. There are also a lot of mosquito because of the linear skylight. The most important thing that they lack are caring. Some of them might losing their family and have a miserable pass in their life. So, we finalized out that we can help them to solve some of the problem. Our objective are made them feel warm and hope from our caring.

List of their needs:

- caring- mosquito net- bench- mural art- Refurnish furniture- landscaping- sign board

Most of the old folks that live in Rumah Caring Kajang have a miserable pass and maybe losing their family. We try to give them our caring which is visit and chat with them. After we know about each of their story we also try to comfort them with some encourage talk. We also cook some delicious food for them to eat to achieve their happily.

Page 8: Esd report.doc

Mosquito net

The hollow of linear skylight cause the mosquito fly into the house make the old folk cannot sleep well and made them got skin problem(swollen and tickle). It will also effect their healty problem. From the start we want to buy the aluminium flame directly from the shop but after decided we use the wooden which more environmental friendly for the flame to ensure that the environment is not be pollute because to produce the aluminium release a lot of carbon dioxide. We use the wood pallet to do the flame of the mosquito net and nail it on the linear skylight.

Mural artwork’s bench

The exterior of the olf folk house are lack of bench for the old folk to rest, sit and chill. We try to find a cheap bench from home-furniture but the price is not cheap and it is

Page 9: Esd report.doc

not recycable. So, we decide to build a bench that attached along with the mural art panel by using wood padlet and unwanted tyres.

Mural artwork

The poor eaterior appearance make the olf folk house lake of vitality. At the start, we are struggling with the material of the board. Some of us feel that a wooden hard board from the shop is more nice compare with the wooden pallet. After some argument, we choose to use the wooden pallet which is the waste of the factory. We tear down the waste wooden pallet from the factory and reinstall them together to be a board and paint a nice mural on it.The paint also get with other mural painter since we just need to use a little amount of paint.

Page 10: Esd report.doc

Refurnish furniture

The chairs are worn and corrosion occur which will cause the old folks fall and injured. We tear out the chairs and grind it with sand paper then coat it with shellac to prevent corrosion and preseve it.

Page 11: Esd report.doc

landscape

There are so hot in the old folks house and poor exterior condition because the exterior of it are lack of trees. We decide to plant different type of tree and flower to cold down the climate of it and ensure the exterior look nice and beautiful.

Sign board

The old folks house does not have sign board. Some of the visitor fail to notice the old folks home, they will think that there is a normal housing area. Without the sign board the people who like to help others cannot get the information of the owner and cannot contact the people incharge. The other old folks that homeless who possible to save will failure. We use the same wooden pallet which we left over from the mural art to be a board and paint the name and information of the old folks home.

5. Goals/Objectives• Reduce carbon footprint by reusing, By reusing the goods than others no longer need or use, it can dramatically reduce carbon footprint from the “provision of goods”. Saving the environment, saving earth.

• Creating a better environment for the old folks to live at. By reducing the temperature around and preventing dengue.

• Create awareness to the public. To attract contributors and involve other organization into the project and together build a caring society.

The objectives of the environment community service that we have done are as follows:

➢ to increse the awareness of current environmental issues locally➢ to induce creativity in attemping to explore the current environmental

6. Life Cycle Assessment

The Life Cycle of a product is calculated since they are raw materials then being processed in the manufacturing, packaging, distribution, then being used and lastly disposal or recycle.

We calculate the energy, carbon footing and costing during the process and compare them with what we have done to save the environment and benefit the community.

Through reusing the materials, the energy embodied to make a product will be reduced as the process of manufacture and the time to reproduce the raw material is skipped.

6. Procedures/Scope of WorkSignboard

Signboard is strongly requested by the owner of the old folks’ home as it is significant to mark up the location of it for the convenience of the people who are interested to visit it. The signboard that we need to build required having clear and accurate information, stable and corrosion resistant to resist harsh weather. Therefore, before we design the signboard, we discuss with the owner about their design requirement for the signboard. Here is the design of the signboard we done after discussion:

Wood pallets had chosen as the material for signboard as it can be reuse from the factory and it is strong as well as weather resistant if a coat of shellac was applies on it. We use mural paint that left over from one of our group mate for the signboard word painting to reduce the wastage of the material. Here is the photos of the progression of work:

Page 22: Esd report.doc

Mosquito Net

After the feedback from the old folks who living there, we found that the pest netting are needed to prevent mosquito from entering to the interior. The pest-netting will install at the linear skylight (for ventilation) between the roof and the wall as the mosquito is entering from there.

Page 23: Esd report.doc

- The linear skylight that allowed entering of mosquito

We use recycled wood as the frame of the netting to reduce carbon footprint. It is because the common material of the frame is aluminium which will produce a lot of carbon footprint and it is non-renewable. Therefore, using recycle wood for framing can reduce carbon footprint.

Mural Work

Mural work is used to decorate the exterior of the old folk’s home. We draw a mural of an old man with black color mural paint. This is to call the attention of people that passby the old folk’s home about the issue of children ungrateful to their parents. We hope that people will think twice before they send their parents to the old folk’s home after they saw this mural. Firstly, we grind the wooden pallets to make it smooth so that people will not hurt their hands when they touch it. We nail the wooden pallets to from a board after that. Later, one of our members draws a draft on the pallets and paints it with black mural paint. Lastly, we write quote that reminds people to be grateful to their parents beside the mural.

Bench

We will build a bench which will be connected to the mural artwork. Sometimes, the old folk will take a small walk outside the old folk’s home where there is a lake around that area. The bench provides a resting place and a place to chit chat for the old folk. The visitors that come to the old folk’s home also can have a rest on the bench. We are planning to reuse materials such as old tyres and wooden pallets to make the bench. We get the old tyres from an owner of a garage who kindly donates the tyres to us. The tyres are tied together with ropes so that it will not move easily. After that, the wooden pallets are installed on the tyres as the seating place.

We are planning to reuse materials such as old tyres and wooden pallet to make the bench. We get the old tyre from a kind owner of a garage.

Refurnish furnitures (Chairs)

According to our observation, the furniture there are all old and fragile. Especially the wooden chair which they moved from the old place. The surface of the chairs are uneven and it corrode so it cause uncomforting to the people who sitting. First, we grinded off the uneven surface of the wooden seat. Then we painted a coat of shellac on the surface. After the shellac dried off we repeat these two steps again.

Initially, they plan to buy new furniture using the donation. However, after we renew the old furniture, they had saved the money to buy new furniture and we successfully reduce the wastage of the furniture.
