Funding 2010-11
• ESCalate offers awards for development of teaching and learning, pedagogic research, and resources;
• Awards offered to those in Education departments in universities and FE Colleges providing HE level programmes;
• Awards range from £50 to £15k;• Thematic, last one year, based on national and discipline
priorities in all four administrations of the UK. These are large awards requiring collaboration across institutions and across countries of UK;
• Open, several types, with applicants proposing their own focus.
Thematic and open awards
Thematic 2009-10• Student wellbeing (2 x £10k max) closed;• 21st Century teacher educator (2 x £15k max) closed.Open• Hot Topics – (£50) available - individual award to promote
discussion of an important current issue;• Sharing Ideas – (£500) available - for dissemination of good
ideas and interesting practice;• Student award – (from £200 - £1000) available - for supporting
individual or group learning; • Pedagogy and practice – October 2010 (up to £5k) for
development activity by individual or group.
• Everything is on line, including: guidance, FAQs, (EoI) form (Expression of Interest) where required, full proposal form;
• Applicants must first register online with ESCalate;• Where bids go to external evaluators, we receive an independent
recommendation on whether to make an award;• Themed awards application has two stages, first the EoI, and for successful
applicants, a second stage full proposal;• For bids over £1k, milestones, targets and expenditure details are required; • For bids over £1k successful applicants receive a formal offer which needs
to be signed by an institutional finance officer;• Payments of larger awards are phased through the life of the project,
against completion of agreed outputs with payments made on receipt of an invoice;
• For Hot Topics, Sharing Ideas, and Student Awards, the application and payment processes are simplified and kept to a minimum.
Additional ESCalate activity includes:• Leading HEA funded
Internationalisation project across all centres with Languages SC;
• Employability module – online for students and staff;
• Increasing Subject Centre Collaboration especially re: the Every Child Matters agenda e.g. the ICS-HE project;
• Work with CETLs and others (FDTL evaluation);
Contributor to HEA Evidence Net;
Supporting Discipline Focused Change Academy (Enhancing Learning through Technology).
