Esau
•Oldest son of Isaac•A man’s man•Loved by his father•A godless and foolish man
Jacob
• A Momma’s boy• Peaceful, stayed home• The smarter of the two• A cheater, manipulator• Nickname- “Grabber”
The basic story
What’s the big deal?
• The birthright was the inheritance of the oldest son.• It was twice as much as any other sibling got
Why is he called “godless”?
•Not because he made a foolish choice•He made a foolish choice because He turned his back on God.
He was a good, but godless man
• He was a good son, who cared for his father• He forgave his brother after 14 years• He lived his life without reference to God.
What’s wrong with being a good, but godless person?
• They have mixed up priorities and values that lead to bad and impulsive decision that lead to trouble and heartache.
He made a wrong choice in his marriage.
(Gen 26:34-35)
He married a Hittite woman, not a Hebrew.
He sold his birthright for a bowl of soup
B. They have no future or hope. They are wasting their lives.
Esau never expressed any regret or repentance
for:• Ignoring God and living for
pleasure by worldly standards• Making unwise choices• Not desiring a relationship with
the God of his “fathers.”
Esau never made it into the “circle of fellowship”
with God.
•There are eternal consequences!
