Hardware InstallationBefore Installing the MAXPower eSATA 6G RAID card...
• Make sure computer is turned off and unplugged from its power source• Take appropriate electrostatic discharge precautions:
Step 1 OpenthecomputersystemschassisandlocateanunusedPCIe2.0or1.0slot(x1,x4,x8,orx16).
Step 2 RemovethePCIslotcover.
Step 3 GentlyinserttheMAXPowercardintothePCIeslotandsecurethebrackettothecomputerchassis.
Step 4 AfterinstallingtheMAXPowercardattachanyeSATAstoragedevicestothecardandstartyourcomputer.
Step 5 OnceyouhaveinstalledtheMAXPowercardintoyourcomputer,startyourcomputerandinserttheDriver&SoftwareInstallationDisctoinstallthenecessarydriversforyourcomputeroperatingsystem.

Mac OS XOnceyouhaveinstalledtheNewerTechMAXPowereSATA6GRAIDCardandbootedyourMac,followtheseinstructionstoinstallthedriversandtheNewerTechWebManagersoftware:
1. InserttheNewerTechMAXPowereSATA6GRAIDCardInstallDiscintoyourMacandnavigatetothe“MacOSX”folder.
2. Double-clickonthe“Newer_Controller_mac_XXXXXX.dmg”filetomountthediscimagecontainingtheMacOSXsoftwareanddrivers.
3. Double-clickontheinstallerpackagelabled“MAXPower_eSATA_6G_RAID”tostarttheinstallationprocess.
4. Followtheon-screenstepstocompletetheinstallationprocess.Afterinstallhascompleted,youwillbepromptedtorestartyourcomputer.YouwillneedtorestartinordertousetheNewerTechMAXPowereSATA6GRAIDCard.
Windows 7/Vista/2008AfterstartingyourcomputerwiththeNewerTechMAXPowereSATA6GRAIDCardinstalled,Windowswilldisplaythe“NewHardwareFound”notificationinthetaskbar,whichwillstatethatthe“Devicedriversoftwarewasnotsuccessfullyinstalled”.
To install the drivers:1. ClickontheWindowsStartmenuandrightclickon“Computer”andselect“Properties”whichwilllaunch

Changing Device Settings
Dependingonthefeaturesofthedrivesyouareusing,youcanadjustsettingssuchasReadAhead,WriteCache,TCQ,andNCQ.
Initializing Devices
InitializingadrivewritesnecessaryRAIDconfigurationinformationtothedrivetoprepareitforinclusioninaRAIDarrayand/orsparepool.
Unplugging Devices
Toproperlydisconnectadrivefromthecontrollercard,clickonthedrivetoberemovedandthenclick“Unplug”toallowthedrivetobephysicallydisconnectedfromthecontrollercard.
IfadriveisincludedinaRAIDarray,theentireRAIDarraywillneedtobeunpluggedfromtheArrayManagementscreenbeforephysicallydisconnectingthearrayordrivewithinthearray.Seethe“Unplugging an Array”onpage10formoreinformation.
Rescanning for Devices
IfadriveisconnectedtothecontrollerwhileintheDeviceManagementscreen,click“Rescan Devices”tohavetheWebManagerrecognizetheconnecteddrive.

DriveswillbeinitializedautomaticallyaspartoftheRAIDarraycreationprocess,butitisrecommendedtoinitializeadrivebeforeincludingitintoasparepool.

Array ManagementTheArrayManagementscreenactsastheWebManager’shomescreen,buttoaccessitfromanyotherscreenclickonthe“Manage”menuitemandselect“Array”toentertheArrayManagementscreen.
Creating a RAID Array
TocreateaRAIDarray,clickonthe“Create Array”buttoninthe“Logical Device Information”section.Oncethe“Create Array”screenhasloaded,configurethefollowingsettingstocreatetheRAIDarray:
1) Array TypeSelecttheRAIDlevelyouwanttouse.See page 3 of the manual for RAID type explanations.
Select“JBOD(Volume)”ifyouwanttouseasingledriveorwanttodoaconcatenation/spanningofdrives.
2) Array NameNamethearrayforidentificationwithintheWebManager.Thevolumenamewillbecreatedafteryouformatthecreatedarray.
4) Cache PolicyWrite BackWritestothearrayarecached,whichwillresultinhigherperformancebutdatalossmayoccurintheeventofapowerfailure.
Write ThroughWritestothearrayarealwayspassedtothedrivesandsubsequentreadsmaystillbecompletedfromthecacheifnecessary.
3) Initialization MethodQuick InitializationSkipsthefullbuild/initializationofthearrayandallowsforavolumetobecreated.Thisisnotusuallyrecommendedandisonlyacceptableforusewithnewdrivesthathavenothaddatapreviouslywrittentothem.
ForegroundTheRAIDwillfullyinitializebeforeavolumecanbecreatedandthearrayutilized.Thismaytakehours.
BackgroundAllowsavolumetobecreatedandutilizedwhiletheRAIDinitializationisconductedinthebackground.
5) Block SizeAsmallerblocksizeresultsinfastersmallfilereadsandwrites.
Alargerblocksizeresultsinfasterlargefilereadsandwrites.
6) Available DisksSelecttheavailabledrivesyouwanttouseinyourRAIDarray.
7) CreateClickon“Create”tobuildthearray.Apop-upnotificationwilldisplaywiththecreationconfirmation.
Afterthearrayhasinitialized,dependingontheinitializationmethodchosen,thearraywillbepassedtotheoperationsystemtobeformattedasavolumeforuse.

Array Information Window
TomanageaRAIDarrayafterithasbeencreated,youneedtoaccesstheArrayInformationwindowofthearrayyouwishtomanage.FromwithintheArrayInformationwindowyoucanunplug,verify,delete,rename,rebuild,andexpand/migrateanarray.
Unplugging an ArrayToproperlydisconnectaRAIDarrayfromthecontrollercard,youmustaccesstheArrayInformationwindowandclick“Unplug”.
Ifanarrayisphysicallydisconnectedwithoutclicking“Unplug”analarmwillsound.
Verifying an ArrayVerificationcanonlybedoneonRAIDarraysthathavedataredundancy(dataprotection).
RAID1&RAID1/0Theverifyprocesscomparesthedataofonemirrorwiththeother.
RAID5TheverifyprocesscalculatesRAID5parityandcomparesittotheparitydataonthearray.
Ingeneral,verificationalsocheckseachsectoronadriveforanyerrorsorproblems.Periodicverificationofanarrayallowsthedrivefirmwaretotakecorrectiveactiononanyproblemareasofadrivetoassistinminimizingtheoccurrenceofuncorrectablereadandwriteerrors.
For instruction on how to schedule periodic verification, see page 11 on Tasks.
Deleting an ArrayDodeleteanarray,clickonthe“Delete”buttonfromwithintheArrayInformationwindow.Apop-upwindowwillaskyoutoconfirmthearraydeletion.Click“OK”tocontinuewiththedeletionor“Cancel”tocancelthedeletion.
Renaming an ArrayTochangethenameofanarray,enterthedesirednameintotheemptyfieldnexttothe“Rename”buttonandthenclickthe“Rename”button.
Rebuilding an ArrayWhenaredundantarraybecomesdegradedandentersa“Critical”state,itwillneedtoberebuilt.
Rebuildinggenerallyoccursautomaticallywhenitisneeded,butiftherebuildprocesshasbeenpreviouslyaborted,itwillneedtoberestarted.
Tostart/restartarebuildclickthe“Rebuild”buttonintheArrayInformationwindowofthedegradedarray.
Expanding/Migrating an ArrayByutilizingOnlineCapacityExpansion(OCE)andOnlineRAIDLevelMigration(ORLM)techniques,itispossibletomigrateaRAIDarrayfromoneRAIDleveltoanotherandalsoexpandthecapacityofthearraywithouttakingthearrayofflineordeletingtheexistingdata.
DuetoalimitationinMacOSXwhichwillrequirethemigratedand/orexpandedarraytobereformatted,itisonlyrecommendedtousetheOCE/ORLMfeaturewithWindowssystems.
Use on Mac OS X will destroy existing data!

Spare Pool ManagementThepurposeofasparepoolistohavedrivesinreservetoinstantlytaketheplaceofanyfaileddrivesinaredundantRAIDarraysuchasRAID1,RAID1/0,andRAID5arrays.Thisallowsrebuildstostartinstantlyinordertominimizetheriskofdataloss.

EventsTheNewerTechWebManagersoftwarewillautomaticallylogalleventsthatoccurontheMAXPowercontrollercard.
Indicatesgeneralinformationandgeneraloccurrances.
Warningofminoroccurrencesandissues.Theseincludepluggingofdevicesintothecardandminorissuessuchasinconsistentdatathatcanbeeasilyfixedbyaverifyorrebuild.
Warnsofmajoroccurrencesandproblemssuchasfaileddrivesandimproperdisconnectionsofdrivesandarrays.
Health Inspector SchedulerTheHealthInspectorSchedulerisalwaysvisibleintheTaskscreenoftheWebManagertocheckdrivetemperatures,badsectorcounts,andanyothererrorsthatmaybenreachinghighlevels.Ifanyproblemsarefound,awarningeventwillbecreatedandlogged.Ifyouhavesettheemailnotificationforwarningsinthe“Settings”section,youwillreceiveanemailnotification.
New Verify Task SchedulerTheNewTaskSchedulerisonlyvisiblewhenredundantRAIDarraysarepresentandisusedtoscheduletimestorunbackgroundverificationsandrebuildsofarrays.
Tasks ListOnceaVerifyorHealthInspectortaskiscreated,itwillappearinthe“Tasks List”section.Todeleteascheduledtask,selectthecheckboxnexttothetaskandclickonthe“Delete”button.

SHI (Storage Health Inspector)TheNewerTechWebManagerhasabuilt-inhealthmonitoringsystemtoallowformonitoringofdrivecharacteristicsandS.M.A.R.Tstatusattributes.Toaccess,clickonthe“SHI”menuitem.
Self-Monitoring,Analysis,andReportingTechnology(S.M.A.R.T.)isamonitoringsystembuiltintodrivestomonitordifferenthealthattributestoassistinwarningofpotentialproblemsbeforecatastrophicfailurecanoccur.ToviewtheS.M.A.R.Tstatusattributesofanattacheddrive,clickon“SMART”toexpandtheattributesforviewing.
WithintheSHIsectionoftheWebManager,youcanalsosetthetemperaturewarningthresholdforattacheddrives.Certaindriveshavedifferentmaximumoperatingtemperatures,soalwayscheckyourspecificdrivesbeforechangingthethresholdsetting.Ifatemperatureexceedsthethreshold,itwillturnfromgreentored.
SHIwillalsodisplaythenumberofbadsectorsfoundandrepaired.Havingasmallnumberisacceptable,butifthenumbercontinuallygrowsorthenumberturnsred,itisstronglyrecommendedtoreplacethedrive.
SettingsGeneralconfigurationsettingsfortheNewerTechMAXPowereSATA6GRAIDcontrollercardcanbesetintheSettingspagebyclickingonthe“Setting”menuitem.

Continue Rebuilding on ErrorEnablingthisallowsthecontrollertokeeprebuildingthearrayasmuchaspossibleeveniftherearereaderrorsoccurringonthesourcedrives.
Audible AlarmEnablesanddisablestheaudiblealarmsformajorevents.
Rebuild PrioritySetstherebuildprioritygradewiththehigherthepriorityprovidingthefastestrebuildtimes,butslowingdownanyaccessthatoccursduringtherebuild.
Spindown Idle DiskSetsthetimeinminutesforharddiskdrivestospindownwhennotbeingused.
SMTP Setting / Recipients / Add RecipientEnterSMTP(outgoing)mailserversettingheretoallownotificationsandwarningstobesenttoemailrecipients.Youcanaddmultiplerecipientsandchooselevelofeventsthataresenttoeachemailrecipient.
Connection OptionsSetsoptionsforaccessingtheWebManager.Restrictingtolocalhostonlyallowsaccesswhileonthecomputerthatthecontrollercardisinstalledinto.Asecurehttpsconnectioncanbeenabledalongwithauthenticationusing/settingausernameandpassword.Thecontrollercard’slisteningportcanbechangediftherearecardsinstalledwiththesameaccessportspecification.

ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassBdigitaldevice,pursuanttopart15oftheFCCRules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainstharmfulinterferenceinaresidentialinstallation.Thisequipmentgenerates,usesandcanradiateradiofrequencyenergyand,ifnotinstalledandusedinaccordancewiththeinstructions,maycauseharmfulinterferencetoradiocommunications.However,thereisnoguaranteethatinterferencewillnotoccurinaparticularinstallation.Ifthisequipmentdoescauseharmfulinterferencetoradioortelevisionreception,whichcanbedeterminedbyturningtheequipmentoffandon,theuserisencouragedtotrytocorrecttheinterferencebyoneormoreofthefollowingmeasures:
•Reorientorrelocatethereceivingantenna•Increasetheseparationbetweentheequipmentandreceiver•Connecttheequipmentintoanoutletonacircuitdifferentfromthattowhichthereceiverisconnected.•Consultthedealeroranexperiencedradio/TVtechnicianforhelp.
Modificationsnotexpresslyapprovedbythemanufacturercouldvoidtheuser’sauthoritytooperatetheequipmentunderFCCrules.
Thisdevicecomplieswithpart15oftheFCCRules.Operationissubjecttothefollowingtwoconditions:(1)thisdevicemaynotcauseharmfulinterference,and(2)thisdevicemustacceptanyinterferencereceived,includinginterferencethatmaycauseundesiredoperation.
