Thiem leads their head-to-head 4-2 overall, but they have split their two meetings in 2019. They have also split their two previous hardcourt clashes. Thiem is playing at the Erste Bank Open for the 10th straight year (including 2010 qualifying). He began the week with a .500 record (8-8) in his nation’s capital, with his previous best results being quarter-final appearances in 2013 and last year. World No. 5 Thiem now has the chance to become the first Austrian to claim the championship since Jurgen Melzer earned his second consecutive Vienna title in 2010 by winning an all-Austrian final against Andreas Haider-Maurer. This week, Thiem also became the first Austrian semi-finalist and finalist at the event since 2010. 26-year-old Thiem is also attempting to become the first player this season to win 5 ATP Tour singles titles. In his last ATP 500 event, Thiem won the Beijing title earlier this month, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final from a set down. Schwartzman is seeking his first indoor ATP Tour singles title. Two of his six ATP Tour singles finals have come indoors, but he lost both, at Antwerp in 2016 and 2017. World No. 15 Schwartzman earned his 39th match-win of 2019 by defeating Gael Monfils in the semi-finals, which ties his career-high for a single season (also 39 wins in 2017). Schwartzman also remains in contention for the Nitto ATP Finals. He is currently No. 14 in the ATP Race to London, and can move into 12th position with a win in the Vienna final. 27-year-old Schwartzman would become the second Argentine to win the Vienna title, following Juan Martin del Potro in 2012. Prior to 2012, Argentines had finished as runner-up three times: Guillermo Canas in 2001 and 2004, and del Potro in 2011. Schwartzman is 7-23 against Top 10 players, but four of those wins came in 2019, including a victory over then-No. 8 Thiem at Buenos Aires. He picked up his fourth Top 10 win of the season this week, when he eliminated No. 9 Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals. A win over current World No. 5 Thiem in the Vienna final would be the biggest win of Schwartzman’s career by ranking. This season, he beat two players ranked No. 6 at the time for his current biggest wins by ranking: Kei Nishikori at Rome and Alexander Zverev at the US Open. VIENNA QUARTER-FINAL FAST FACTS

• Dominic Thiem seeks his first Erste Bank Open semi-final in nine main draw appearances at his home event when he meets familiar foe Pablo Carreno Busta on Friday. The World No. 5 is 10-8 in Vienna with three quarter-finals.

• This week, Thiem earned his first win over former Top-10 players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Verdasco. He was 0-2 against Tsonga and 0-4 against Verdasco before defeating them in the first two rounds respectively.

• Thiem’s rivalry with Carreno Busta is a different story entirely, led by the Austrian 6-0 on tour and 7-1 overall. They have played at a Grand Slam (US Open), Nitto ATP Finals, ATP Masters 1000 (Shanghai), ATP 500 (Rio de Janeiro) and two ATP 250s (Buenos Aires and Gstaad), as well as on the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Futures Circuit.

• Thiem is playing in his ATP-best 49th quarter-final since 2016. He is seeking his 30th semi-final during that time.

Player 2016-19 QFs Player 2016-19 SFs Dominic Thiem 49 Rafael Nadal 35 Rafael Nadal 43 Novak Djokovic 31 Alexander Zverev 43 Roger Federer 31 Roberto Bautista Agut 41 Alexander Zverev 30 Novak Djokovic 38 Dominic Thiem 29 Kei Nishikori 38

• Carreno Busta is 1-15 against Top-5 players with his lone win over then-No. 5 Grigor Dimitrov at 2018 Barcelona.

• Two of the tour’s emerging stars collide when Matteo Berrettini meets Andrey Rublev. Berrettini is a career-high

No. 11, Rublev is a career-high No. 22 and both are rising. Rublev is 19-6 and Berrettini is 18-7 in their last 25 matches respectively. One of those matches was Berrettini’s win over Rublev en route to the US Open semi-finals.

• Rublev is on a career-long seven-match win streak, highlighted by his title victory Sunday over Adrian Mannarino

that came on his 22nd birthday and in his hometown of Moscow. The Russian and 18th-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime are the only two players currently in the Top 35 who were ranked outside of the Top 100 earlier this year.

• Two spots for the eight-man Nitto ATP Finals are at stake during next week’s ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris. Berrettini and Alexander Zverev are in line to qualify at No. 8 and No. 7 respectively in the ATP Race to London. Diego Schwartzman and Karen Khachanov are on the outside looking in and meet in an important match Friday.

• Gael Monfils, a finalist in Vienna 11 years ago, is inching even closer towards the cut-off. Monfils trails Berrettini by 310 race points with 410 points still on the line in Vienna. The Frenchman faces qualifier Aljaz Bedene on Friday.

• There has never been a Russian finalist in the 45-year history of the Erste Bank Open (1974, 1976-2019). Khachanov and Rublev hope to become the first Russian semi-finalist in Vienna since Andrei Chesnokov in 1992.

ERSTE BANK OPEN TALKING POINTS

• Top seed Dominic Thiem will aim for a deep run on home soil this week at the Erste Bank Open. The Austrian No. 1, who has won four titles this season and has already locked up a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals in London, has a .500 record at Vienna, with two quarter-final appearances as his best showings. Thiem starts off the event with a challenging first-round opponent: wild card and 2011 Vienna champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Frenchman, who has won two titles this season, has beaten Thiem in both of their prior encounters, including at Vienna in 2013.

• Seven Top 20 players overall will hit the starting line at the ATP 500 event this week. Among those is No. 3 seed Matteo Berrettini, who currently occupies the No. 8 spot in the Race to London, as he aims for one of the two remaining places at the Nitto ATP Finals. Berrettini has put together a breakthrough season, hitting a career-high ranking of No. 11, winning two titles, and reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open.

• Diego Schwartzman and former finalist Gael Monfils also reside in the Top 15 in the Race to London, and

they are both playing here as competition heats up for the final two spots at the season-ender.

• No. 6 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime is another member of the Top 20 in the draw, as he goes for his first title. Top Canadian Auger-Aliassime is joined in the field by Canadian No. 2 and fellow #NextGenATP player Denis Shapovalov, who earned his first ATP Tour singles title on Sunday at Stockholm. Both Canadians have already clinched slots at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.
