6 PENTACLE THEATRE

Howard Street Charter Schoolis moving to a new homeSummer 2019

Why are we moving?

Growth studies of Salem-Keizer School District indicate that all of our high schools are going to need more capacity for students. Thus, our neighbor, South Salem High School, will need more space for the ever-increasing number of students in our area. That means we are moving to help accommodate the needs of students in Salem-Keizer just like we always intended in our charter since 1997.

When are we moving?

With the help of Salem-Keizer, we will be moving Summer 2019. We plan to open in our new location for the 2019-2020 school year.

Where are we moving?

Howard Street will be joining the downtown area at 625 Marion St. NE (97301). This centrally-located space will allow students easier access from all over the city to our pro-gram. Whether you walk, bike, take the city bus, or drive, you will be able to get to the new downtown Howard Street.

We need your help!

Our new location was once a grocery store and the Oregon Department of Energy. Now it needs some work to be a facility that meets the vision and mission of Howard Street. Renovations are needed to create the innovative environment that we need to continue our work. Help us create our science lab, kitchen, computer lab, music class-rooms, art classroom as well as our standard rooms that let the 3Es - Einstein (Science/Math), Ellington (Art/Drama/Music), Esperanza (Humanities) continue to thrive in Salem-Keizer.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

W elcome to our final show of the season. Another year has passed, bringing us to the doorstep of our 65th year. That’s right, for nearly 65 years Pentacle Theatre

has been providing quality theater to the greater Salem area. We have a big year ahead.

Before we turn the page on 2018, we want you to know about a very special event happening this month. A world-class per-former from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival will join us for one night only. On Monday, Nov. 26, Robin Goodrin Nordli will perform her one-woman show, Virgins to Villains: My Journey with Shakespeare’s Women, at 7:30 p.m., on the Pentacle Theatre stage. Nordli has been a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival company for nearly 25 years. She’s a fan favorite among many members of the Pentacle community.

Michael and Beverly Carrick have made Nordli’s visit possible with their generous sponsorship. I hope you will join us for a performance that OSF artistic director Bill Rauch calls “witty, insightful, and revealing.”

We will start 2019 with our production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Elsinore! We will be bringing the Walt Disney classic as our winter fundraiser. This show has all the songs you remember and love plus all the local magic we can muster. Playing for only one weekend in January, tickets will be the perfect holiday gift.

Our 2019 season begins January 18 with the modern drama comedy, Distracted. A hilarious, provocative, and poignant look at a modern family and an epidemic dilemma: Are we so tuned into our 24/7 info-rich world that we’ve tuned out what really matters? Lucas Hill and Isaac Joyce-Shaw direct a talented cast featuring some fresh and some familiar faces.

Mark your calendars for our 65th anniversary party event on July 13, 2019. Every five years we celebrate our anniversary, induct new Lifetime Members and celebrate the people who make our theater a jewel of the mid-Willamette Valley. The planning com-mittee promises that you’ll have a great evening of comaraderie and entertainment.

With such a variety of events, there really is something for everyone at Pentacle Theatre. We know, with your support, we will be here another 65 years!

20 PENTACLE THEATRE

W hat’s wrong with 9-year-old Jesse? He can’t sit still, he curses, he raps, and you can’t get him into—or out of—pajamas. His teacher thinks it’s Attention Deficit Disorder. Dad says, “He’s just a boy!” And Mama’s on

a quest for answers. Is Jesse dysfunctional or just different? A comedic take on the distractions of modern life.

Lucas Hill and Isaac Joyce-Shaw are co-directing Pentacle Theatre’s production of Distracted, with the help of assistant director Jodi Deming. The cast includes Mason Atkin, Darlene Barlow, Julianna Gibbons, Walt Haight, Ellie Knoll, Valerie Mozena, Liam Smith, Mathieu Voisine, and Annalyce Winkler.

Distracted opens on Friday, January 18, and plays through Saturday, February 9. Single tickets will be available after December 1 at the Pentacle Theatre ticket office located at 145 Liberty St. NE in downtown Salem or online at pentacletheatre.org. For more informa tion, con-tact the Pentacle Theatre ticket office at 503-485-4300.

“A smartly comic, sharply observant and surprisingly humane play.”
