BIOGRAPHY Birth: Allen

stein (Olsztyn), East Prussia

Education: National economics at the University of Munich,

Architecture at the Technical University of Berlin; two years later

transferred to the Technical University of Munich.

PHILOSOPHY Mendelsohn used no historical precedents in

formulating his designs. As a result, his early buildings avoid the eclectic borrowing that mark so many of his contemporaries.

His architectural ideas were derived from expressionistic sketches and romantic symbolism which recognized that the qualities of modern building materials should dictate a new architecture.

In later designs, Mendelsohn moved away from his earlier expressionist architecture, designing a series of buildings in a more linear fashion.

EINSTEIN TOWER The Einstein Tower is

an astrophysical observatory in the Albert Einstein Science Park in Potsdam.

Much of the building was realized in concrete, brick, covered with stucco.

Pavilion is an International Style

 building constructed in 1935 and designed by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff considered by some to be in an Art Deco style

COLUMBUSHAUS  The Columbushaus

was a nine-storey modernist office and shopping building in Potsdamer Platzin  Berlin, designed by Erich Mendelsohn and completed in 1932.

It was an icon of progressive architecture.
