February 2013

The plan to transition from the existing custom space-dyed carpet to a standard line solution-dyed carpet requires going from a very specific color palette to a neutral palette with accents. Since the carpet will change gradually, they are looking to coordinate with the existing color scheme and add neutrals over time. Currently the hospital system reupholsters waiting and lobby seating in more easily maintained textiles and want to add more coordinating options. The environmental services group likes the clean ability and durability of performance textiles with Crypton and coated polyurethane and vinyl. The engineering and maintenance personnel also want to save money on the materials. The goal is to reduce the cost and make the overall look more sophisticated. The options I chose to offer are all less than $50 per yard, all fabrics standard in Crypton and vinyls and polyurethanes with ink resistance and antimicrobial/bacterial properties.

New Impact

New Location

August 2012

Though previously a Doctors office with exam rooms, this location needed an overhaul. During construction, this designer discovered that the existing restroom doors in the public area did not meet code requirements nor the needs of this practice, bariatrics. Remedies were made and the necessary upgrades and freshening to accommodate the relocating Doctor office. Furniture was relocated and existing furniture re-purposed. New signage installed throughout and exterior signs to draw attention New furniture was ordered for the additional student study area. At the request of the practice manager, I made the recommendation for the VCT flooring pattern layout to include tiles in colors from their old location.

Coming into this project in the middle of the design phase, I was asked to make a

recommendation and presentation to the project champion to select a more visually lightweight

chair to coordinate with the other selected furniture. The chrome framed metal chair shown

below as selected and purchased. The installation was not completed due to a need to re-

commission the space for patient use.

As minor updates were being made to this doctors practice, I was asked to speak with the office

manager and determine which accent paint colors, from an established palette, she wanted to

use for the exam rooms. As we met, she expressed that new signage would also be welcome

and a way to brighten the entry hallway. We also discovered an opportunity to add an accent to

the flooring where the new check out booths were being added. We also determined that new

signage would help to identify the entry to the practice.

With a small budget this doctors office expanded the number of exam rooms originally available to

see post operative patients. The office manager wanted to reuse the existing ceiling tiles in the new

space, match existing carpeting and incorporate the wall colors into the flooring and recommend a

vinyl fabric for the chairs in the exam rooms and try to get a new set of furniture for the break room.
