A unique arrangement of the Celine Dion's song from Titanic for nylon-string guitar

A s I write this lesson I'm somewhere in the Austrian Alps in the middle of a tour with the Austrian fingerstyle guitarist Thomas Leeb (who we'll be studying in gt in the near future) . As part of our concert performances, we

have been playing an arrangement of the theme from the film Titanic where we both play the same guitar at once! It has been going down a storm with the audiences here, but my arrangement for gt isn't so demanding on manpower and is for one guitar with one player!

perfonnance notes The original track by Celine Dion modulates up a­major third for the last chorus. In my arrangement, the key changes from E to AJ, (we don't normally use the key of G# - its enharmonic equivalent of AJ, is easier to deal with).

The opening section is just the melodic line. I have used a fingering that maximises the use of

open strings and creates an harp-like effect with notes ringing on over each other. This creates a nice texture while there is no supporting bass line or harmony.

In the first bar I choose to use two different E notes - the open high E string and the fretted one on the B string. Observe the tied notes in the­notation and use our CD recording to help you recreate the effect. Phil Hilbome's large reverbs (oooh, saucy - ed) add another textural layer. From bar 9 the melody is embellished with a simple harmony. It is important that you pay careful attention to the tied notes; these will help build up the dynamics and texture of the piece.

the PivOtal POint The key change happens in bar 78. Technically the chord in this bar is a pivot chord: it's common to both the old key and the new key and allows the music to pivot into the new one more easily. This is a common harmonic tool and is used by composers and arrangers all the time. The arrangement ends with a chorus in the new key.

This piece demonstrates how the use of texture in an arrangement can give depth to performance. Try to use some of these ideas in your own arrangements. Until next month ... gt
