FOREWORD

Down near the source of the mid-continent migrant streams in Austin, Texas is acompassionate human being. Alan Bloebaum has long been concerned for the families of

agricultural migrant workers, which trek across the country harvesting the nation's crops.

He recognized that among their many hardships they lacked adequate and usefulinformation about family planning services that should be available to them on their

journeys services that would enable them to control with dignity the future expansionof their families.

Filling this void in their lives became his vision, a vision shared by Mrs. Hattie Louise

Browning and Mrs. Julienne S. Meyers. It was their combined dedicated efforts thattranslated the vision into potential reality when, in December 1967, the development ofthis directory began.

Mrs. Mary Mae Hartley assi:Aed him in designing the questionnaires and identifying the

agencies to which they would be sent. Special consultant to the project was Robert

Browning. Miss Gwen Mapes assisted me in compiling information for the directory and

in corresponding with the agencies. In addition, all of the staff of the Southwest Region

office gave excited attention to the development of the directory.However, Alan Bloebaum's deep feelings were continuously demonstrated by the

vigilant watch he kept, by the careful criticisms he made, by the enthusiastic response he

gave at each critical point as the final editing progressed. And now the realization of hisvision is left for those of you who are in direct contact with migrant families. As you

refer them to sources of sound family planning, you will enable them to improve the

family stability and dignity that all citizens deserve.To paraphrase Socrates, American society will never reach a noble state, until the

uninjured become as indignant about injury as the injured.

Proper use of this directory can make successful the first step in a longneeded program. To simplify usage, the directory is arranged alphabeticallyby state and by city within each state.

Some addresses may appear inadequate; however, most centers can belocated easily by inquiring upon arrival in a community. Also, since operatingschedules are subject to change in order to meet public demands, personsreferred to a center should be informed of the possibility of such changes andencouraged to seek current information locally.

When directing a migrant to the geographical location of a family planningservice, place in his hand a card that lists the name, address, schedule andavailable telephone numbers of the agency.

The function of this directory is to provide continuous service to themigrant family. Properly utilized, its purpose will be accomplished.

Introduction

The information in this directory is designed to acquaint migrant familiesin mid-continent streams with family planning services that are available tothem as they travel across the nation. This program attempts to fill a voidwhich has effected a problem of long standing. The program is designed topromote continuity in family planning by identifying sources of assistancethat are available to migrants. It provides professional personnel with a newtool to help meet the distinctive needs of individual migrants.

Selection of the centers was determined by sending questionnaires torelevant county, state and regional agencies. Every county was surveyedwhere at least 100 migrants of mid-continent streams were in transit duringthe peak seasons. By this means, current data were gathered and compiledabout services available in thirty-four states.

Two points are vital to the effective implementation of the program. Thefirst is systematic use of the directory according to the usage plan. To attainfully its purpose the directory should be used as outlined in this plan. Second,

the directory needs to be updated periodically. Plans are already underway toobtain the update information, and space has been allotted in the directory

for its inclusion.

This directory is another first in family planning. Hopefully, it will add amuch needed component to the family stability of the migrant who seeks toimprove his family's well-being.
